All my bearded Scando Balearic cosmic disco dudes, let's talk about DISKJOKKE

Because I've been caning his new album, En Fin Tid, over the last few days. It's very nicely plugging the gap until the Aeroplane record comes out - brightly-coloured sparkly beach music + bubbling 303s + gorgeous soaring synth melodies.

He's toned down the chunky Lego house music sound of the last album a bit, although there are a couple of My First Orbital moments on there. My only real criticism would be that the fourth track, Rosenrod, is so great that it overshadows the rest of the album a bit.

Anyway I'm sure he has remixes and collaborations and so forth that I'm not familiar with, so talk about him here.

I really liked his first LP, looking forward to hearing this new one, from what Matt says above it sounds good!

Neil S, Thursday, 17 June 2010 09:34 (fifteen years ago)

It's a bit more expansive than the last one.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 June 2010 09:35 (fifteen years ago)

whoa, rosenrød is good!

caek, Thursday, 17 June 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

Lovely, innit? Something about the way he suspends bits of of those really high, washy chords.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 June 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

I hear nothing but good and intriguing things about this album.

(Wait, I don't have to put my beard back on to post to this thread, do I? I'm really trying to keep a lid on my WATMM stalkers at the moment...)

Going to download this out of curiousity - I couldn't quite warm to to the first album, but the descriptions here have piqued my interest. The key change on "I was to go to Marocco and I don't see you" (or whatever it was called) from that first album was so cloying and cheesy, which was really frustrating as I thought it had a great melody and beat.

mizzell, Thursday, 17 June 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's a great record!

cutty, Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

horrible thread title!

cutty, Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

Balearic is about reclaiming terrible thread titles in the name of dancing and good times.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

love his remix of Music Go Music "Light of Love", I'll have to check out the album

dmr, Thursday, 17 June 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

ya, definitely digging this new album. guess i already knew a few tracks but i think i'll listen to this way more often than that collection of remixes from last year (dislocated?)

My only real criticism would be that the fourth track, Rosenrod, is so great that it overshadows the rest of the album a bit.

Haha I'm listening to the album now and was pretty much thinking the exact same thing! Really like it in all.

Really, I need to be reminded of things like this *after* they come out. Or at least hit Spotify.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

And you're all wrong, this album is all about Nattestid.

Heads up:

Smalltown Supersound is pleased to announce the new record from Diskjokke, Sagara, out June 14th.

Diskjokke (aka Joachim Dyrdahl) follows Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas in the line of innovative artists hailing from Oslo's respected electronica scene. So far in his short career, Diskjokke has released two studio albums -- Staying In and En Fin Tid -- and Dislocated, a remix compilation featuring re-licks for the likes of Lindstrøm, Foals, Lykke Li, and Bloc Party. In between these full-lengths, Diskjokke has put out a variety of vinyl releases with Moshi Moshi, Full Pupp and M.A.N.D.Y's Kindisch imprint. In the last 18 months alone, he's reworked Crystal Castles, The xx, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and more, and released an excellent collaboration with DJ Strangefruit, done a mix for Annie Nightingale on Radio 1, and created a track with Holy F**k that will be released this year.

Diskjokke's Sagara project came to be in 2009 when Norway's Øya Festival commissioned him to make a one-off piece. With resources given to him to travel anywhere and work with whomever he wanted, after much research, he decided to focus on the traditional Indonesian music known as Gamelan. From there, he contacted a group called Sambasunda from Bandung, Java in Indonesia. Diskjokke spent two weeks in their studio recording traditional instruments and sounds, as well as venturing outside the studio to capture city noise and mountain springs. The original intent was to make this into a dance project, maybe even leaning more towards techno, as he felt Gamelan and techno share a similar aesthetic in some regards. However, towards the end of his stay in Indonesia, he spent a week in Bali, an experience that changed the direction of the project entirely, as well as his perspective on music forever.

SAGARA is lovely, beatless until the last track. feels cathartic, having a beat at the end.
i'd expected the whole thing to be his usual discodeal (not having read ned's c&p til now) but this is different and worth a listen imo.

carstens, Tuesday, 12 July 2011 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

Is there a digital release for this? really looking forward to it...

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 12 July 2011 13:00 (thirteen years ago)
