that one aeroplane remix of the friendly fires song replaced the guy vocal with a girl vocal and the song improved like 100000x so on the basis of this representative sampling of all music ever created I will choose female

I think male voices are more versatile, but there have been way more atrocious male singers ruining bands in the last ten years than atrocious female singers.

i have v. different requirements from each

male: I want it to be sensual, sad, androgynous, flirt w/ ecstasy, flirt w/ me (nyc peech boys, arthur russell, anthony, chris brown, todd edwards)

female: i want it to be sexual, powerful, broken, poised, ethereal (stevie nicks, aaliyah, roisin murphy, mary margaret o'hara)

so it seems like a vote for men, but idk? the only one i feel really strongly about is blues (however big mama thornton makes me feel stupid for even saying such a thing) and metal (although that has more to do with the style being 99.9% tipped toward a male vocal) xpost

What about later Billie or Chet Baker? Part of their charm is precisely in the ruination of their voices.

oh heh that is an interesting question because i find later chet baker completely unlistenable but love his smooth voiced era

I think Louis is as good as anybody ever but I still said 'women' for jazz 'cause, as a rule, I'm not as moved by most male jazz singers as I am by the likes of Billie or Ella or Dinah Washington or Sarah Vaughn, etc...

Tom Waits is really one of the only ruined male voices I love, iirc.

I am much more likely to prefer a woman's voice. Guys have to work harder to impress me.

I find most women's voices more distinctive. A lot of guys' voices kind of sound the same. That said I have a problem telling male actors apart.

Seems to me like you can get away (more) with being a singer in a band and having a crappy voice if you're a guy... don't really listen to that many male singers, though, so could be missing out on a lot.
