and George Burns?

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 June 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

Its hard to to wrong with Phyllis Diller.

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 17 June 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

and George Burns?

all write-ins accepted!

bug holocaust (sleeve), Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard a lot of these, but devo, television, otis redding are all excellent if I'm not voting for the original.

tylerw, Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Leaning towards the extended stomp of the Trad Gras och Stenar version at the moment.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Trad, Gras all the way. I love drinking cough syrup.

chromecassettes, Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

Television, because its freekin amazing & I don't want to vote for the original. :-)

Not that it would win or neccessarily ought to have been in the running, but I love this Italian cover from 1973. I love how the Stones version went into the ears of some hippy in Rome and somehow sounding like this.

Brio, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

so easy: devo.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 June 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

devo, best cover ever

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 18 June 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

The Los Apson version is awesome too, but Devo really did kill it - and they Scorcese points for that scene in Casino.

Brio, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

best video ever, too.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 June 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

that jittery, pasty-faced druggie flipping himself over-and-over is an eerie highpoint of 80s music video production.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 June 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

and is there any truth to that rumour that Otis had never heard the original when he recorded his?

haha, that doesn't sound too likely, but I'd like to believe it ...

Trad Gras. The second half of the this is incredible

The Marty Funkhouser Dance Machine (van smack), Friday, 18 June 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

The Rolling Stones thought Otis did it better, but I thing the Rolling Stones did it best. Stones, u fukkers.

Hou Hsiao-Hsteen (crüt), Friday, 18 June 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

From the Stax/Volt singles box set liner notes:

Scrounging for material to round out the album, Steve Cropper had a brainstorm: "It was my idea to do it. I went up to the front of the record shop, got a copy of the record, played it for the band and wrote down the lyrics... (Otis) just didn't know the song. He hadn't heard it as far as I know."

Redding's manager Phil Walden concurs: "Otis kind of read the lyrics through about once or twice and then just really jumped right into the thing. That was a real spontaneous record. He had never heard the Rolling Stones' version."

So, we have two people who fuel the rumor. Perhaps it is true.

Even so, I'm voting for the Del Rubio triplets. I've never heard their version of this, but their cover of "Whip It" is better than Devo, and Devo's cover of "Satisfaction" is better than the Stones, therefore...

cynthia batter blaster (Stevie D), Friday, 18 June 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Phyllis, but a few write-ins FYC:

Bubblerock (www.youtube.com/watch?v=66cTHKWtfAE - Jonathan King reinvents the song as soft rock manna complete with a full string section)

Gary McFarland (breezy, so.cal., soft samba. Mmmm, nice)

Jose Feliciano (in a similar vein, but he cracks up half way through)

Bill Cosby (from 'Hooray for the Salvation Army Band!' Cool and insane at the same time)

Vanilla Ice (not actually heard this one, but...it's Vanilla Ice!)

Jeff W, Friday, 18 June 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

If we can believe that Wilson Pickett had never heard "Hey Jude" (or had heard it but somehow thought it was called "Hey Jew"), then Otis's "Satisfaction" ignorance is pretty plausible.

Wish I'd heard more than a half-dozen of these! Considered voting for Justine Bateman because nobody else will, except that somebody probably WILL, so I'll go with Devo. And she says, "Babybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybabybaby..."

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 18 June 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

betting that Cat Power will carry the lurker vote.

Residents version is conceptually great but not my favorite listening track from them.

bug holocaust (sleeve), Friday, 18 June 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

This is Devo, clearly.

Still, threw my vote to Fushitsusha since likely not many others will.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 18 June 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

the top 3 listed are my favs. Devo and Cat Power really made the the song their own.

But Residents = scariest cover ever

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

imo Stones shouldn't have been an option, goes without saying that the original is great and without it the covers wouldn't exist. so i voted for Devo as best cover.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

true, hadn't thought of it like that but that would have been more accurate.

lol @ Vanilla Ice

hardee's (crüt), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

I just listened to the Vanilla Ice version and it's way more of a mindfuck than Devo's fwiw. just not in a good way.

hardee's (crüt), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

Do people not like the Residents version or just not heard it? Cos imo wuz totally robbed.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

I voted for it

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

Me too. So there you go.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

Missed the poll, but would have voted for Otis. Among the versions I've heard, I like the Britney and Devo covers better than the Stones original as well. I find Aretha's version to be a curious misfire, one of the very few things she recorded around that time that I don't like.
