I've always been under the impression, true or not, that Daltrey contibutes little more to The Who than being a mic-swinging tight-pants-wearing frontman while Townshend and Entwistle did the lion's share of the songwriting. Is that right? If so, he did his job well and, especially after they moved out of their early mod pop phase, the dude showed he had a serious set of pipes. Still, he could've been replaced early on and The Who would've still been The Who (not now, of course...he's one of only two original members still alive).
Corin, on the other hand, is pretty essential to what makes Sleater-Kinney Sleater-Kinney. She writes, she sings, and she's out front but also an intrinsic part of the unit. Plus, she's not (yet) done anything embarrassing outside the confines of her band (her upcoming solo album will be the judge of that). Conversely, Daltrey has never made music outside The Who that was good in any way, shape or form.

not sure if people who are all 'Daltrey didn't write therefore he wasn't that important' are rockist or just RONG

Daltrey's first album is a motherfucker...probably the most sustained and intriguing close-range look into the brilliance of his voice.
And while I love S-K/Corin Tucker, I never saw her this determined/possessed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8TbDul_r7g

daltry is a lot like bob stinson in the replacements to me...like he doesn't write songs but sort of embodies what the band IS....even townsend has admitted that roger was actually the cool badass mod in the early days and sort of became the messianic tommy stadium god figure.
townsend could write the who but daltry was the who.
ksh i know u got zinged a lot and stuff and everyone's gotta toughen and be an ilx cool guy eventually but don't let it turn to you cynical.

also, i really do like sleater-kinney but "baba o'reilly" or "my generation" alone destroy their entire career

Listening now to Daltrey's first solo. I don't think I'd ever heard the whole thing except for "One Man Band." I'm finding it pretty agreeable, actually.

I only like his Townshend thing "After the Fire." He performed a Bryan Ferry leftover! ("Going Strong").

This is such a weird TS... if it was CT vs., like, Poly Styrene I could get into it...

i'd rather watch corin tucker act, at the very least
― mookieproof, Sunday, 20 June 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)
i had an argument recently with an older dude who was making great claims for Townshend being one of the great songwriters of you know, the "rock" era or something. I don't think he's actually all that great a songwriter (he wrote some great songs, sure), he was just great at using the skills of his band. without them, he didn't have a whole lot going for him. where corin tucker fits into this, i'm not sure.

I think Corin Tucker vs. Geddy Lee might have been a better TS.

I took the comparison to be more about these two being frontpersons for the very similar guitar approaches of Townshend and Brownstein, and them both singers being wailers. There's sort of a chicken and the egg thing happening with Townshend and Brownstein's guitar styles- do the have to make way for all the other action, or do the spaces they leave make openings for all the action?

Kinda what I was going after but I didn't want to front-load the thread - was curious as to what people would come up with first. When I think of The Who and/or Sleater-Kinney, Daltrey and Tucker are sort of the last people I consider. Unfair I suppose, - each band has this atomic reactor of sound going off and someone has to stand in front of it.

I think RD self-identifies as a tough rocker from the wrong side of the tracks, but obv possessing a heart of gold, but a bit of paradox as well - not easy to pin down is this maverick.
― calzino, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 13:16 (seven years ago)
Odd choice for a thread revive, calzino. Stanning and/or mocking Daltrey, his filmic cameos, and his questionable facial hair choices are understandable pursuits. But why drag Corin into it?

fair point, I was 1 hour sleep shattered yesterday and it was a piss poor attempt at clowning this enigma that is RD anyway.
