Back-jumping the Bandwagon...

So, you didn't jump the bandwagon the first time, therefore you missed or didn't care about, let's say, the Strokes (just an example!). Since then, you've been wondering about whether you should buy the album anyway because, let's say, many of your friends say it's a damn fine album.
You wait and wait and finally you "back-jump" (couldn't come up with a catchier term) and buy it.
I'm sure this has happened to a lot of you, so I would like to know which artist/genre/hype was involved. And, more importantly, what did you think when you first heard it? Believe/don't believe/shouldn't have believed the hype... Why didnt' I go for it the first time? I could elaborate even more (e.g. what's the influence of the time that has passed between the hype and the moment you "back-jumped" etc.) but let's see your comments first...

back jumping very rarely occurs for me as its the ione thing that will make me not buy an artists work if it has received loads of hype and i've missed the boat somewhat - i always feel embarressed at the counter. the last time it occured i swallowed my pride and bought the white stripes album (this is after they were even in the mirror - so u can see why it was an issue) i enjoyed it but there was no longevity about the album so i didnt feel it justified the hype - now its just another album in my collection that will get dusted offf in 2 years time for a listen

back jumping for me no longer exists when you have either

1) had it on tape/md/cd-r for ages

2) its now on mid-price

3) its in a sale

4) you steal it from a friend

The only band I can think of lately was Rancid. I thought they were a joke, ska-punk ripoff when I first heard them so I dismissed them. Then, someone told me that they were actually good. So a year later, I borrowed one of their CDs. I still don't get anything out of them.. but I waited 7 years to hop the train - and then missed it.

i had a strange experince with the bandwagon and the strokes.I was the 1st one in my college to know about the strokes, the 1st to buy the singles and the 1st to see em live(colchester arts center)1st to pu a strokes badge on my bag,1st to buy a t-shirt.i never got round to buying the album though, dont know why really, not enough money or had other priorities.anyway the strokes became big and and the type who only buy albums when the music has been pushed into their faces for months on end(in other words the general record buying public).after a few months, got a copy of the album burned from one of em.when i listened to it i was glad about not buying,it was a very major dissappointment compared to the early singles and seeing them live in a proper venue.it was just bloody slow and boring compared to what i had seen and heard. So i can honestly say to people that they've gone downhill since they became famous.

shame on anyone who does that.

I love threads that make me feel like one of the general record- buying public!

Apparently you are, Tom -- I was surprised to see the Strokes album had gone gold in America and has now sold upward of 600,000 copies.

I do this all the time. After all, who am I going to trust - a reviewer with a deadline whose force-fed his/her ears with an album until he/she's got an opinion on it? An editor who needs a "latest sensation" story to sell his mag? Or a general consensus among people whose opinions I respect, and who are still telling me an album is good after living with it for 6 months or a year?

I did this with Death Cab for Cutie. Hated the name. Hated the idea in general. Avoided any mention of them for the longest. Then I heard "Movie Script Ending", loved it, and decided to check out the earlier albums. Not excellent, but more enjoyable than expected.

I do this quite a lot - see the "Last Five Records You Bought" thread for evidence - but I don't care. It's usually bandwagons that passed when I was a toddler or a middle schooler anyway, and I just want to find good music no matter what the circumstances.

I do it constantly. Just cos I'm totally out of the loop otherwise. And I can't be bothered to (pre)screen out what's worth getting or not, so I let other folks do it.

I back-jumped big time on PJ Harvey (if only!). Thought for years that Polly was just kravitzing Patti Smith, then heard To Bring You My Love & was slain.

i'm on the fischerspooner bandwagon now, though i suppose the wagon never made it through denver the first time.

hmmm,..i'm rather worried by what arf arf said. trust the public?oh no no no.much better to trust a few friends.you know more about them and can evaluate their their praise or critiscm of albums or songs or artists.you can do with the general public, you just dont know em.

Too numerous to mention, too embarassing to recount. Currently back-jumping on Stereo Total.

Mary, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

stereo total-perfect example. heard em on john kennedy(XFM) being interviewd, few songs played, very catchy. But still havent got round to buying the album, not been a priority, expect i will someday when i can bothered, but they'll be known everywhere by then.

"kravitzing" is now my favourite word of all time.
