Remember when Ray Stevens was on dr. demento and the streak was vaguely funny? Well, now he is shilling himself on Fox News during the glen beck show between vaccum cleaner ads and hannity bullshit.

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:20 (fourteen years ago)

defense of a ray stevens: The mississippi squirrel revival, the streak

prosecution: the fact that he is obviously a total fucking cunt at this point

mitigating factor: prob terribly old and on the border of death throes

final verdict: lonely saddo, will prob die before mediocre cash in on palin worship can build him a mexican defeating fortress of solitude.

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:31 (fourteen years ago)

he doesn't look _that_ old tbh

i don't know whether it's really popular in Canada as well (sarahel), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:35 (fourteen years ago)

ok so i left fox news on the background and what the fuck is this red eye report w/ the talentless dude (ok to be fair MOST TALENTLESS dude) from colin quinns tough crowd

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:40 (fourteen years ago)

ok not to turn this into a fox ads expose, but its pretty much ethanol and nutrisystem at this point. i am not a boycott guy in general, but hmmmm

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:53 (fourteen years ago)

nutrisystem still exists?

i don't know whether it's really popular in Canada as well (sarahel), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:54 (fourteen years ago)

are there still late night ads for the bedazzler?

i don't know whether it's really popular in Canada as well (sarahel), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:57 (fourteen years ago)

"I'm My Own Grandma" was even funnier. "Guitarzan" was terrific. Sad, sad stuff he's degenerated into.

ImprovSpirit, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

so sad, I remember that streak song from like 5th grade.

I was like "Rich Vos has a show on Fox???????" so finding out who it actually is was kind of anticlimactic

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

I had no idea! Although Ahab the Arab was probably a pretty big clue, now that I think about it.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

My dad had an album of Ray Stevens' greatest hits c. 1978 and I used to listen to it and LM six-year-old AO.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

ok hahaha the fact that in retrospect i allowed Jim Norton to pass up Nick DiPaolo as most talentless tough crowd regular means i must have been pretty drunk at the time i reported that

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

Ray Stevens kind of fits into the odd demographic that is that Mike Huckabee show. That thing is just fxxxing bizarro. It's like taking the old Nashville Network show "Nashville Now" except with Huckabee as Ralph Emery (except you get the Huck also on Bass) and adding in whatever rightwing/evagelical message they are pushing this week. The only thing that show is missing is some puppet to popup and interact with the guests and Huckabee.

Shotgun Red might be available.

His post-Katrina "Battle of New Orleans" was pretty awful & offensive too - didn't even write his own music for that one, just hijacked Johnny Horton's. "The Streak" and "Gitarzan" are timeless, but fuck this guy. I'm not even going to look at those videos.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

"the streak" is not actually funny, it just seemed that was to us when we were kids & nakedness was the funniest thing in the world

Could've sworn he was dead.

❽ (M.V.), Friday, 25 June 2010 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, he's alive and working in Nashville. The Country Music Hall of Fame does these events, they did one on Ray recently where he talked about his career, so I interviewed him for a preview thing for Nashville Scene. He told me, "Obama is the single most destructive force in American history...we've gotta get him out of there...it's amazing to me people don't see the threat he poses to America..." And so on. Told me he was working on a history of comedy music--some kind of anthology using the original recordings, I believe. He wasn't funny on the phone.

And don't underestimate the power of a well-placed slide whistle when you're 8 years old.

Phil D., Friday, 25 June 2010 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

So Ray no longer believes that everything is beautiful in its own way?

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Friday, 25 June 2010 12:36 (fourteen years ago)

It would seem so, though he does appear to be partial to mudslinging disinformation.

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 25 June 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

amazingly(?) there isn't a thread on ILX for gallagher, but man, is he ever on this same tip

Gallagher is upset about a lot of things. Young people with their sagging pants (in faintly coded racist terms, he explains that this is why the jails are overcrowded—because "their" baggy pants make it too hard for "them" to run from the cops). Tattoos: "That ink goes through to your soul—if you read your Bible, your body is a sacred temple, YOU DIPSHIT." People naming their girl-children Sam and Toni instead of acceptable names like Evelyn and Betty: "Just give her some little lesbian tendencies!" Guantánamo Bay: "We weren't even allowed to torture all the way. We had to half-torture—that's nothin' compared to what Saddam and his two sons OOFAY and GOOFAY did." Lesbians: "There's two types—the ugly ones and the pretty ones." (Um, like all people?) Obama again: "If Obama was really black, he'd act like a black guy and get a white wife." Michael Vick: "Poor Michael Vick." Women's lib: "These women told you they wanna be equal—they DON'T." Trans people: "People like Cher's daughter—figure that out. She wants a penis, but she has a big belly. If you can't see your dick, you don't get one." The Rice Krispies elves: "All three of those guys are gay. Look at 'em!" The Mexicans: "Look around—see any Mexicans? Nope. They'll be here later for the cleanup." The French: "They ruin our language with their faggy words."

querelle: the last fassbinder (donna rouge), Thursday, 1 July 2010 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

i guess we could make turn this into the "rolling guys who were kind of maybe funny for five minutes in the '70s and who are now hateful monsters and also even less funny" thread

querelle: the last fassbinder (donna rouge), Thursday, 1 July 2010 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

Copy/pasted this on here before but this is all you need to read about Gallagher -- and is one of the most effective reviews/character assassinations ever:

goole, Thursday, 1 July 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

Man begins dumping buckets of food onto plates. Man stops trying to speak Spanish. Man gives up and speaks English. Man says: "We were expecting a big crowd tonight and we're going to do a show for a big crowd anyway" because the crowd is small and shrinking. Man is booed again. Man yells: "It's the Fourth of July weekend, you don't got no place to go so just shut up."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 July 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Is anyone honestly suprised that Ray Stevens went from being really bad to being really, really bad?

four years pass...

Given how patently awful he's been throughout the course of my own life, no one is more surprised than me to discover that some of his '60s stuff is actually decent. He was a much lighter touch with the humor brush.

two years pass...

An update via Wikipedia:

On January 18, 2018 Stevens opened his performing center, CabaRay, located on River Road in West Nashville. It's a 700 seat showroom which offers a dinner and a show in addition to housing a piano bar along with recording facilities for both audio and video productions. There is balcony seating for those who purchase concert-only tickets but dinner and concert seating is floor level.

I thank God Gallagher has apparently never made any contributions to political candidates. I fear one of them would be elected president and appoint him ambassador to some obscure country, where he might unwittingly start World War III.
