Perfection, of a kind, was what they were after,
And the poetry they invented was easy to understand;
She knew human folly like the back of her hand,
And was greatly interested in disney and weed;
When they laughed, respectable scenesters burst with laughter,
And when they cried the little children died in the streets.

I kind of liked a couple of things I heard, but didn't hear much. There's a stupid interview with one of them in The Wire this month: "Although I realise it's really un-reggae of me to say this, not only does the idea of marijuana not interest me, the whole creative aura of 'being stoned' is a huge turn off. At most I'll sip some CHILLED CHAMPAGNE* while I record vocals".

* That's why they call it chillwave, kids.

seandalai, Thursday, 19 August 2010 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

anybody who sips anything chilled while recording vocals is posing so hard I don't even know what to say

I mean, the renegotiated Pocahaunted without Bethany was pretty awesome live, and their only record, Make it Real, sort of registered to me as a psychedelic ESG.

Sort of sad to see that potential go out.

OTM

I mean what's the point of hating this band? They were always a cult band, it's not like thousands of people are creaming over them. Pretty easy to justify hating them, but easier to ignore them.

FRESH MEAT (MFB), Monday, 23 August 2010 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

Pocahaunted were great. didn't care for the new line up album though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 23 August 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really have an opinion either way. The only thing of theirs I own is the split 2xCD with Robedoor, with which I mainly fawn over the Robedoor tracks and let the Pocahaunted ones wash over me.

I smell a new poll

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 9 June 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

But seriously, imo, the LA Vamps album and Make it Real, along with the Anika album to create a sort of group of female-fronted albums that have a sort of dark-psych take on late '70s/early '80s postpunk tropes, with maybe The Fool (darkwave psychrock) on one end of this spectrum, and Stridulum (goth torch songs w/ gloomy postpunk production) on the other...

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

(^that was probably not one iota more coherent than "howling ghostly awake-dream noise- dub")

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

alright, drugs, i tried w/ that LA vampires album, really i did, but i couldn't get there. it seems to be doing something similar to a lot of acts i like (sun araw, for instance), but it's too wispy for me to grab hold of, and her vocals bug. wish they were more buried, more processed, or... more better, you know? the music's nice, in a vague sort of trippin on clouds way, but only i'm not sure they're enough to hold my attention on its own.

will try again, cuz i don't hate it, but i'm not getting the ESG thing. more like j-pop via wicked witch (which at least sounds good in theory).

i don't understand my post right at the very top. i've never even heard of this band.

The Boy Who Can Go Inside The TV (dog latin), Friday, 10 June 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

Make It Real is a Pocahaunted album, not an LA Vampz one; you may be listeninv to something I haven't heard...?

It is hard to get a handle on; it's a lot cleaner than the LA Vampz/Zola J album, but it still has some similarities to that album...I find ESG to be a bit hard to get a handle on too, but they share the sort of leaner, minimalist band thing but with weak-ish female vocals. But ESG deal in rock-solid simple funk bass riffs while Pocahaunted is more about the psychedelic guitar'n'organ soup...

Haven't listened to Sun Araw yet, or Wicked Witch for that matter, but I do think it sounds somewhat like OOIOO (who themselves heavily homage the Slits)

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

whoa, I nearly flew into one then till I realised you said OOIOO and not oOoOo. I liked the matrix metals collab a lot more than the zola jesus. Im fucking my noise dude cred here but at times I just wish the vocals werent so goddamn bad

straightola, Friday, 10 June 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

havent heard the matrix metals collab (yet)

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

allright, now i'm thoroughly confused. help me, drugs! (just wanted to say that.)

i thought that the Matrix Metals collab, So Unreal, WAS was the "LA Vampires album" you were endorsing, and that's what i've been listening to. as you may have gathered, i'm not too keen on it, though it's perhaps worth a listen. replaces the psych/industrial dream-dub with fractured 80s pop & funk moves. if you meant the Zola Jesus collab, then heck yah, i love that to death!

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 10 June 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dont love ZJ's split w burial hex or tsar bomba either, so i feel pretty internally-consistent today!

69, Friday, 10 June 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

what I am talking about

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

Make It Real is a Pocahaunted album

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

only LA Vamps album I've heard is the Zola J collab

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

Make It Real is a Pocahaunted album

^ this i still haven't heard. is it comparable to the ZJ split, or just cool on its own terms?

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

cool on its own terms; I grouped it with Zola Jesus album before I even knew that LA Vamps was the girl from Pocahaunted, but its much more rock-oriented

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

cool, "rock oriented" is often a plus in my book. will check.

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

right on; i like it

brodie_odie_dope (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

listening to make it real again because of this thread of confusion

still really enjoy it and i stand by my "psychedelic esg" idea, though i'd maybe emphasize all of the dub in there

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Friday, 10 June 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

^that psychedelic ESG description is what got me into the album...thx a lot dude! It's totally rad!
