Mani hints at Stone Roses reunion tour

An article in the local Manchester paper the Manchester Evening News has sparked rumours that the Stone Roses are to reform, according to what Mani (Primal Scream) has told Terry Christian.

In the small piece, featured a short while ago, the MEN said that the rumour mill has been grinding with gossip that the Stone Roses will be reforming for a set of festival dates next year. In the article, Terry Christian apparently told the MEN that the news had come directly from Mani who once played bass with the band. Terry said: "I was talking to Mani and he's been talking to Ian Brown about it, and he's not against the idea," he added "And Reni's up for it and John Squire is coming round to the notion. I'd have thought it's a definate possibility. I always thought it was weird they spilt up anyway."

However, don't get your hopes up yet. Apart from the fact this rumour seems to materialize every year without any roses reformation as yet, a spokeswoman for Ian Brown has said there is nothing to the tale. She said "There's no truth in it, it's the same old rumour that has been coming up every year."

I can't see this happening. There are always rumours of this. I certainly wouldn't have thought John Squire would have been up for it, nor Ian Brown for that matter. Even if it did happen, what would it be like? Of course I would def go to see them, but I fear it just wouldn't work now.

if this happens then it is PROOF that there is no god.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Is there something in the onelove story about this?

J, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can't tell whether a reunion is good or bad news... if it happened, I don't think I could bear to witness Brown loping about the stage like a baboon, slaughtering his own songs in the time-honoured tradition we have come to expect from him.

Roger Fascist, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Maybe it would just be better to remember them from ur armchair!

Pinkpanther, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This was hinted at in a recent issue of... uh, one of those British magazines like Mojo or Q. The Stone Roses were the cover story, and the mag talked to each member individually, and each one of them lamented on the Roses' demise, and talked about how great it used to be, and how their new stuff sucks, and how they "if (member of choice) called me on the phone, I'd take the next cab to his house." Apparently none of the members knew that the magazine was talking to all the other members. Or something like that.

Would you go to see them if it did happen? I def would.

Pinkpanther, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

what i'd like to(not very likely) they secretly get together and record NEW material(hopefully better than their debut),then tour with the new material(obviuosly play a few old tracks here and there).with the aim of achieving what they had set out to do.

what i'd hate to see-reform in public, rerecord old material and tour just playing the old stuff.and doing it just for the money.it'd just make em look like a substandard oasis.

p.s.obviuosly money drives everything, but i wouldnt want it to be their main priority.

I've recently been getting into Stone Roses again lately. Man, these guys are fucking amazing. The beauty is in the simplicity of their stuff. The first LP and "Turns into Stone" are fucking ace, all the way. These guys could have conquered the world. If they got back together, hopefully we wouldn't have to hear a repeat of "Second Coming"

Manny Parsons, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd have money on them reformong for a few gigs after Squire gets his solo album out.

Nick Southall, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like the Second Coming... never really understood why it gets the constant bashing that it does. It seems like the logical extension of their first record to me: the guitar riffing stretches to Zeppelin- esque flights, the pretty melodies and harmonies are taken back to their folkier origins ("Your Star Will Shine"), the weirdly funky rhythyms got harder and stronger, the lyrics are mostly the same stuff as the first record... what's not to like? I dunno if a reunion would really be any good (Squire's clearly lost the plot, and Brown probably likes being the sole man in the spotlight), it would probably just be because none of them have done anything remotely close to what they initially promised. Although I am happy to see Mani in Primal Scream. Actually, I kinda prefer that the Scream keep him, I like their Manchester super-group line-up w/ Shields, Mani, et al.

When you spend 10 years hanging around with Bobby Gillespie it's bound to rub off on you.

Matt DC, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I should probably listen to the Freebass record just so I have something to laugh about, Seahorses-style, in future years.

Twenty-two years of being tripped up, face down in the mud and being kicked in the face with an iron boot will do that to the most stable of men.

kind of hoping he means all those things have literally happened to him for the last 22 years, Sideshow Bob/rakes style

This site already seems as unruly as a Marnie Stern record (DJ Mencap), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

the freebass i've actually heard (not a lot tbh) is less bad than one would expect. and i've heard bad lieutenant.

fuck's sake; the freebass is awful.

peter hook sent me a nastygram after i called it "a bad joke" though.

I am shocked that Mani knows how to write, tbh.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 03:16 (fourteen years ago) link

he has special software that interprets his bass playing into tweets

outback bumfuc (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago) link

ah, so it's his bass playing that hates the exploitation of Ian Curtis!

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 08:15 (fourteen years ago) link

what exactly has Hook done recently that exploited Joy Division?

there needs to be some sort of secure unit for the members of any manchester indie band 78-92 except maybe MES who gets out on day release now and then
