so this record is really great. even tho i felt like i identified a lot with nathan when he first broke, i thought his recordings were shit. i'm not a big lo fi person as it is, but i found his albums particularly unlistenable and, after seeing videos of him playing live, really needless. but the new album is, as has been bandied about, pretty clean, at least the guitar pop songs. but, more importantly and surprisingly, the typical & awesome bratty so cal punk jamz that you can now hear take the backseat to songs that are more indebted to girl-pop stuff ("mickey mouse" apparently samples the crystals & "when will you come" opens with the classic "be my baby" beat), or, say d-plan ("convertable balloon", which sounds like a one-man d-plan demo) or even panda bear ("baseball cards"). so, it's a record that is what we thought it would be -- great pop-punk finally cleaned up, but it also reveals nathan to be a kid with real ideas that are real good, which certainly came as a surprise to me.
so

it also spelled "convertible" as "convertable" which i thought was intentional
anyway, "green eyes" is a really pretty song on this

no i'm referring the yearly unlistenable garbage (personal obv, hence "for me") that gets picked up by a lot of critics at the time. so yeah the buzz intensifies my hate but i'm mainly talking about the crappy music
― youngdel griffith (k3vin k.), Monday, 5 July 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)
I think "nothing like" his last album is some serious forest-for-the-trees shit. It's better produced, and there are more songs and no instrumental filler, but the overall aesthetic and lyrical perspective is still there. Both albums are clearly made by the same guy. Agree with your other sentiment - it's not really a "hateable" record. It is what it is and you'll be into it or you won't.
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Monday, 5 July 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)
Not a great album really is it. Plus I always get the feeling that Wavves dude would be a monumental prick in real life, and though that shouldn't put me off the music it kinda does.
I find it very hard to get excited by stuff like this, Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls et al.
