Bands that come to cedar falls, iowa to play will play *anywhere*. Here are three that have brightened my summer:

Victim of Modern Age -- Lake Charles, Louisiana. Slintish post-punk stop & start dynamics. Good ratio of tunes to noise. Snarly, attitudinal singer. The sound and graphics of their CD are quite polished. http://www.voma.u4l.com/

Radio Vago -- Los Angeles. These girls are gonna have to be stars. Heavy, noisey wave-core (keyboard player to sound guy: "Could you turn me up loud? I mean UP REALLY LOUD!"). Their drummer really cracks the whip, and the singer does the spazz. hhtp://radiovago.com/

Ahankara -- Cincinnati. Hard to say where these guys are going -- I can't find any web presence on them, they were hawking a CD-R for three bucks and driving like eight hours that night to their next show. Avant beefheartian noise with drone and fiddle. The violin player runs out into the crowd & gets in people's faces.

What obscure groups are playing in YOUR local tavern that are worth checking out?

The glorious Landing from Connecticut, who just played a small bar last night (and dealt with the crowd noise very well, bless their hearts), and will be playing on KUCI later today at 1 pm PDT, so listen in if you can...

Summersault from the great state of Michigan. For fans of Bark Psychosis, late Talk Talk, Mogwai, and their ilk. www.summersaultband.com Sound examples, pretty pictures, etc.

Landing were just here in Greensboro a few weeks ago. Very nice music, eventhough i wasn't able to stay for the whole show.

! How DARE you not tell me of this band before! ;-)

They are pretty obscure, having yet to play a show outside of Michigan. They just had a new record come out, self-released style. There's a local label (Suburban Sprawl), who will be putting the record out in wider release within the next few months. I love them though, the album is one of my favorites of the year, and hardly anyone has heard them yet. I think the Mogwai influence is the strongest and most obvious. Highly recommended to all, download their songs from mp3.com (link at their web site). great stuff that deserves a larger following.

The band Half-Seas Over from Kentucky. A hard-rockin yet adorable girl group that plays fresh, interactive, and just plain entertaining shows.

All sorts of road warriors from TO, More Plastic being my favorite for being insane enough to go to Cape Breton several times. Kitchens and Bathrooms, Rockets Red Glare/Holding Pattern all deserve special mention as well for playing any small town that will have them it seems.

Violent Ramp - already legendary Ann Arbor skatecore trio.

First 7" edition of 60 (FREEDOM FROM RECORDS) sold out in a blistering 3.5 weeks.

Featuring members of some bands that are so well-regarded, the mere mention of their name causes several of the most OCD ILMers to search AllMusic.com almost immediately. Yes, Violent Ramp is that good.

Bye!

Landing really blow now. Seasons is such a dull record. Oceanless, on the other hand, was pure genius. Look how much noise those Mormons can make! They're nice people though. At a show at NYC's Knit a few months ago they gave me their drink tickets since they were sticking to H2O. For that alone, they have my respect.

I thought "Seasons" shows some improvement in the song department, a ying to the drone- noise yang. Both records have their merits though.

Oh I forgot about the bands coming to town

Nasayer- I've seen them 3 or 4 times this year and I'm going again. Good indie rock that knows how to use their influences rather than clone them.

No Doctors- Taking over where the Royal Trux left off. From Minneapolis-2002's scene to watch..boys and girls in thrift stores finest will flock to the twin cities instead of DC/Oly soon.

Coincidentally, the person behind No Doctors is the person behind FREEDOM FROM records and put out the excellent Violent Ramp 7".

How come you get shows in Cedar Falls and meanwhile down here in Ames we get NOTHING?

John Darnielle, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Just lucky, John. These guys opened a rock club in CF called the Reverb (http://www.thereverb.net/) to fill the huge void left by the closing of Steb's. The owners are in a band themselves (8foundead), and I think they LIVE in the building where the bar is. How rockin' is that? There's also a little punk scene simmering here that produces home-made shows from time to time.

Ballboy are touring the US soon-ish. They're ace.

massive props to mr. noodles for shouting out rockets red glare and holding pattern! holding pattern played here a couple of months ago -- my band played our first show at the same venue last week and we actually got more people out than they did!

rockets red glare is fucking awesome ... the lady who works in the office across from me is the mother of the drummer from the wolfnote who just finished playing shows with r.r.g. out east. i can't wait to hear tour stories when he gets back...

as for me, well my band is hoping to make it to calgary before the summer's out and that's probably as far as we'll get. i'm off to see local boys parkade at a shitty hall on 115 ave. tonight.

where on the cape are you from mr. noodles?

john, maybe bands that his cedar falls are inclined to hit iowa city too? I think it's rare for bands that will make it to iowa city to go to ames - apparently that's too far west for the swings through the midwest that lots of bands do. of course, I don't know why they couldn't just go from ames to mpls or vice versa, but... the audiences and venues available in ames probably have a lot to do with it, too.

Josh, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Also, this area couldn't support a "big" venue with occasional big acts like the M-shop in Ames, or even Gabe's in IC. Maybe that fosters a certain DIY. Bands tend to pass thru saying, "Well, we had an open date between Chicago and Lawrence" or some such long haul.
