¡Olé! It's the Matador Records Poll! Part Tres: 101-150

Message Bookmarked

Moving on from Part Dos to the next 50 numbers in the catalogue. Is it just me, or did Matador only release records by the same bunch of people in this period? Guess I can't blame them - they're the kind of names still bandied about in indie circles...

Orange > Electr-O-Pura > the rest (which I haven't heard)

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

Orange vs. Alien Lanes for me. Probably will pick Orange here and then select Under the Bushes in the next go-round.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

OLE-109 Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 -- Strangers From The Universe

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

man I voted for Run On because that is my favorite album out of any of these. followed by the For Carnation and then followed by Wowee Zowee.

18th Dye - Tribute to a Bus is a great great record

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

TFUL 282 album is great, as is the Helium album and the For Carnation. And Wowee Zowee...no idea how I'll vote.

contraceptive lipstick (askance johnson), Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, there are a lot of great records here, but strangely enough it wasn't difficult for me at all to pick out my two favorites.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 June 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

Electr-o-Pura, Alien Lanes and Wowee Zowee = summer of 1995 (16 years old) for me. incredible records that i still love today.

tylerw, Saturday, 26 June 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

Part of this is kind of "random records I loved in the mid-1990s", I don't really listen to any of these any more.

contraceptive lipstick (askance johnson), Saturday, 26 June 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Railroad Jerk's Bang The Drum EP has really good cover of "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?"

Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Saturday, 26 June 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

clearly ole 140 is th best

danbunny, Saturday, 26 June 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

okay, fine, i'll vote for bunnybrains, but my heart says don't ask don't tell.

scott seward, Saturday, 26 June 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

the first thing i remember saying to dan when he played me what would be his matador record was along the lines of: OH NO WHAT DID YOU DO!!! hahahahaha!

scott seward, Saturday, 26 June 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

will shasta vote pitchblende or tful282????

probably dirt of luck or alien lanes for me, though everyone is lucky that chavez's 'unreal is here' wasn't a single

mookieproof, Saturday, 26 June 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, tough choice here. Probably going to go w/18th Dye, but not sure which one. Helium's "Pat's Trick" is one of my favorite singles, but can't bring myself to vote for singles. Chavez also a contendor, and maybe even Pavement or Yo La Shmengo. The latter ones sound dated moreso than 18th Dye who = greatest underappreciated Matador band after Dustdevils. Their reunion album a few years ago was ok but not brittle enough. Kicking myself for missing the tour.

dlp9001, Saturday, 26 June 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

nothing here i love quite so much as my favorites from the last couple polls (uzi, GBV, pavement). orange, alien lanes, wowee zowee and elctr-O-pura are all great though. gotta go with GBV, again.

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Saturday, 26 June 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, so here's the 18th Dye dilemma: Tribute To A Bus has the best sustained mood, driest production. Closest to Pink Flag, I guess. Done has better songs but production isn't quite as good, and for this particular band that does matter. Crayon is an EP but has two of their best songs. What to do...?

dlp9001, Sunday, 27 June 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

Orange

~athdouspart (some dude), Sunday, 27 June 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

Tribute to a Bus was produced by Steve Albini. Done is wonderful, but it doesn't have Poolhouse Blue or Only Burn, but then again I didn't get to spend enough time with Done yet. I've loved Tribute but only recently found Done on vinyl, which was exciting for me.

Evan, Sunday, 27 June 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

Bunnybrains. But this list is clearly where I got off on the indie boat.

xhuxk, Sunday, 27 June 2010 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

oops "...got off (not on) the...." etc.

I guess my second choice would be something by Liz Phair or Pavement, but that might mainly be because I stopped paying attention.

xhuxk, Sunday, 27 June 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

badass

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 June 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

can't believe anyone is willing to stan for run on tbhrr.
alien lanes is my fave; that record is always playing in my fave local diner and it makes me psyched every time, still.

ian, Sunday, 27 June 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

alien lanes was my first gbv, so -- but i can remember listening to the dirt of luck twice in a row the night i got it so . . .

also tom courtenay + blue line swinger wtf

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 June 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

tom coutenay was never a favorite of mine. i was more of a pablo & andrea guy.

ian, Sunday, 27 June 2010 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

thought of you more as an 'attack on love' guy, tbh

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 June 2010 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

my interests in indie rock & noise were sort of simultaneous tbh. but i've always liked pretty stuff.

man Rick Brown is a kickass drummer! "something sweet" is a killer jam! will stan for run on all day

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 27 June 2010 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

haha i actually agree w/u if only pablo & andrea were a single

somehow the song descriptions on the back of electr-o-pura should play a role in this poll

alien lanes

dmr, Sunday, 27 June 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

pablo + andrea is pretty much the best song of the 90s. could listen to that on a loop forever.

tylerw, Sunday, 27 June 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

man Rick Brown is a kickass drummer! "something sweet" is a killer jam! will stan for run on all day

i will gladly stan for run on w/you but on/off is pretty blah compared to like, all of start packing or half of no way.

voted gone glimmering obv.

― tylerw, Sunday, June 27, 2010 12:24 PM (5 hours ago) Bookmark

"Pablo & Andrea" is awesome even though it's essentially a rewrite of Love's "A Message To A Pretty", but "Blue Line Swinger" is in fact the best song EVER.

"Tom Courtenany" and "Ballad of the Red Buckets" are pretty great, but despite its titanic highs, Electr-O-pura is a bit filler-ish for me to not be uneasy about giving it my vote. That's a record with some pretty large quality gaps.

xhckkckhcx says that this is where he got off the indie boat. not i, i sailed on for a least a few more years, into the murky waters of maybe just past 1997. somewhere between i can hear the heart beating as one and a thousand leaves (dgcco indie).

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

electr-o-pura is perfect and by far my favorite YLT album, but I voted for TFUL.
this is an impressive list of albums.

alien lanes, but could easily have been orange

QUSTION 4U: Is "FROGS - NEW YORK BLACK" the single with the cover illustration of a Klansman in a noose with a gold background and hebrew writing? I think Adam + Steve (live) was the b-side?

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Ok I know these are all totally boring, but this is going to be a tough battle for me between Electr-O-Pura, Alien Lanes, Wowee Zowee, and Gone Glimmering.

Spoon and Superchunk both started on Matador, fwiw.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

Granted, B&S weren't even on Matador until their third album, but The Enclave doesn't even exist anymore and Tigermilk wasn't even released in the US until it was released on Matador.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

Superchunk started on Matador before poaching themselves (and Spoon and M.Ward) from Matador. You're "losing it" (groan) if you don't remember B&S from the FMBB days Shakey Mo!

It feels wrong not to vote for Alien Lanes but it feels very wrong indeed not to vote for Wowee Zowee. Sorry to vote for the big obvious names (18th Dye, you were pretty rad) but it's what has to be done.

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 2 July 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, so this is the kind of thing that I always feel uncomfortable about, but have to go with Tribute To A Bus by 18th Dye, just because it's formally so incredibly tight. Seriously, it's like right up there with Pink Flag. Also possibly Albini's best production job ever.

The other album/ep have songs I like better, but are less unified. And when we poll best album *cover* Part Tres, 18th Dye takes it with ease.
