Favorite band/song from this 2003 mix CD entitled "20 Songs" that I found going through some old boxes

I was going through some boxes and found a CD someone made me on 6/29/2003 -- exactly 7 years ago. It's titled "20 Songs" and there are crooked little hearts drawn all over it. I think I'll listen to it right now, just once (I'd not otherwise ever listen to a note of almost any of this stuff... eat yr heart out, ksh).

Anyway... back to the emo/screamo/alt-metal/nu-metal/"art"-rock on this mix CD, please.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

I do like that Tori Amos song, but I think I'm picking Deftones here. The rest of this shit made me hate music for two years in the early '00s.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

getting mad flashbacks about my Delaware emo friends from high school who all thought BoySetsFire were a big deal and my other friend from PA whose cousin was in the Juliana Theory

Liveblog of sorts (I am listening to this now):

Further Seems Forever - GODAWFUL
Cursive - better than I had remembered. Reminds me of Bright Eyes, unfortunately. But it's tolerable.
30 Seconds to Mars - GODAWFUL
Dredg - could be worse... probably one of the "better" things on here?

Still going...

I had that Cursive album The Ugly Organ back in the day. Wasn't half bad. I don't regret selling it but I see the appeal.

Thrics - See You in the Shallows

This should be "Thrice" -- sorry.

Any Thrice fans here on ILX?... hmmmmmm. Okay then.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

oh shit, and i just remembered I had a Florida friend who was into Further Seems Forever. I think it should be a big point in my favor on the how harshly do you judge people when it comes to their tastes/opinions about music thread that I was never a dick to all my friends who were into awful awful emo in high school/college.

~athdouspart (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

don't know any of these songs, though the comp contains several bands i "investigated" at one time or another. like cave-in, god what a heap of soggy dicks. a friend was heavily into an ours album, which as i recall contained one good song. cannot in good conscience vote.

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

The Mars Volta - don't get this one. It's not BAD, per se, it's just baffling why people really like it. Aren't the Mars Volta like the '00s Rush nowadays? I think this is from their first album, when they still showed a bit of At the Drive-In roots... before they went off the deep end (though I can't say I've heard anything past, oh, 2004?). These guys have mad ADHD.

Strata - holy hell GODAWFUL, no-name emotive alt-rock... were they "popular?" I don't remember them at all. LOL chorus refrain: "EVERYYYYYYYY SECOND CHANGESSSSS EVERYTHINGGGGGG IN MYYYYY LIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

Thrice - more LOL than godawful... lol emo.
Cold - FUCKING SHIT

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

I can't listen to the rest of this right now. It's too depressing. I will return later (maybe)...

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Okay I was going to avoid posting the really bad ones but I have to share this. Sounds like a parody of a Staind song (who themselves are a parody of fuck knows what sort of awful sub-Alice in Chains nu-rock).

I love that Thrice song. I was never much for emo or screamo or whatever, or even Thrice beyond this album, but I still play the hell out of it.

kkvgz, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

Mordy is also a Thrice fan and probably has opinions on many of the rest of these too.

Deftones - alright... I dig this one. Not really a Deftones fan, but this is one of their better songs, from their only redeemable album (of those I've heard).

just listened to the thrice song. pretty good. gotta love the maiden guitar in the beginning, nice harmonies, can even tolerate the soaring vocals. modulation at the end seems ill-advised, but doesn't kill it.

and white pony is at least as good as the deftones' self-titled. missed the fact that "change" was on the list the 1st time through. it's good, but too much with the heavy breathing creepy passion etc. thrice is better.

interstellar overdraft (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

Nine Inch Nails - this one's pretty good. The lack of Trent's vocals is likely a plus for the song. Instrumentally speaking, I think it's stronger than 90% of what ended up on Ghosts I-IV.

Cave In - could be better, could be worse. Sounds aimed for radio play. I don't remember this album, but had Jupiter back in 2000-01 or whenever it came out on Hydra Head. Seem to remember it being a little less... alt-rock than this song?

Open Hand - GODAWFUL... no idea who this band is, though. Kinda similar to Thrice/Further Seems Forever.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

This is brilliant. I will hopefully never hear any of these songs, but I'm glad they exist so I can laugh at ilxor's comments. Keep fighting the good fight dude.

seandalai, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't heard most of those songs, but I voted for "Change," which is fuckin classic

Glassjaw - really, really bad. Weren't these guys a "big deal" in the emo/screamo community around 2000 or so? The singer's voice is absolutely horrendous (and I'm not usually one to complain about vocalists).

Sadly I saw the singer's "side project"/other band Head Automatica on the 2004 Curiosa tour. Not very good, either, but I seem to recall them having something of a disco/house/dance influence among the emo-ness, which is probably better than his petulant, bitter self-loathing and whining in Glassjaw.

Coheed and Cambria - Rush-style prog rock (with similar vocals) meets emo-core. Are Coheed fans also Mars Volta fans? That would make sense to me.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

I always get those two mixed up.

The Juliana Theory - how else could this mostly horrific CD end except for the way it started -- with emo-core?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Were the Juliana Theory a Christian emo band? Lyrics seem so. I thought Further Seems Forever were kinda the same way. Lovely. Well at least I didn't have to suffer through Underoath on this CD... on the bright side?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to some Dredg last night. I've been trying to rediscover all the alternative bands of the 90's (or at least originated during the 90's). I'm playing their most famed album, El Cielo, right now. I'll let you know what I think of 'It Only Took One Day' when I get there

serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard that album since, er... 2002.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

ehh, not my thing even though I like progressive stuff. like you said: "it could be worse". there's definitely better tracks on that album then the one you put on the mix but my conclusion is that I'll never try to listen to these guys again. their first album from 1998 was just a tad better but only because it was more metal

serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

I love that Cursive song w/o reservations (actually pretty into that whole album, hate everything else they've done thou, which is wierd, and seeing them play it live was PURE TORTURE)

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

I just want everybody to know that the goofy guy in the Versa Emerge pictures is their ex-drummer. They kicked him out of the band because of depression.

i huge amounts of nostalgia associated with dredg-el cielo and de-loused in the comatorium so i'd be inclined to pick one of those two

i probably wouldn't've picked those particular songs, probably roulette dares from the mars volta and i'd have to think about dredg

cave-in's jupiter was amazing, iirc, but everything i've heard after that has been pretty horrible. i'll have to revisit this one
