I do like that Tori Amos song, but I think I'm picking Deftones here. The rest of this shit made me hate music for two years in the early '00s.

I had that Cursive album The Ugly Organ back in the day. Wasn't half bad. I don't regret selling it but I see the appeal.

oh shit, and i just remembered I had a Florida friend who was into Further Seems Forever. I think it should be a big point in my favor on the how harshly do you judge people when it comes to their tastes/opinions about music thread that I was never a dick to all my friends who were into awful awful emo in high school/college.

don't know any of these songs, though the comp contains several bands i "investigated" at one time or another. like cave-in, god what a heap of soggy dicks. a friend was heavily into an ours album, which as i recall contained one good song. cannot in good conscience vote.

The Mars Volta - don't get this one. It's not BAD, per se, it's just baffling why people really like it. Aren't the Mars Volta like the '00s Rush nowadays? I think this is from their first album, when they still showed a bit of At the Drive-In roots... before they went off the deep end (though I can't say I've heard anything past, oh, 2004?). These guys have mad ADHD.

Strata - holy hell GODAWFUL, no-name emotive alt-rock... were they "popular?" I don't remember them at all. LOL chorus refrain: "EVERYYYYYYYY SECOND CHANGESSSSS EVERYTHINGGGGGG IN MYYYYY LIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I love that Thrice song. I was never much for emo or screamo or whatever, or even Thrice beyond this album, but I still play the hell out of it.

Deftones - alright... I dig this one. Not really a Deftones fan, but this is one of their better songs, from their only redeemable album (of those I've heard).

just listened to the thrice song. pretty good. gotta love the maiden guitar in the beginning, nice harmonies, can even tolerate the soaring vocals. modulation at the end seems ill-advised, but doesn't kill it.

and white pony is at least as good as the deftones' self-titled. missed the fact that "change" was on the list the 1st time through. it's good, but too much with the heavy breathing creepy passion etc. thrice is better.

Nine Inch Nails - this one's pretty good. The lack of Trent's vocals is likely a plus for the song. Instrumentally speaking, I think it's stronger than 90% of what ended up on Ghosts I-IV.

Cave In - could be better, could be worse. Sounds aimed for radio play. I don't remember this album, but had Jupiter back in 2000-01 or whenever it came out on Hydra Head. Seem to remember it being a little less... alt-rock than this song?

Open Hand - GODAWFUL... no idea who this band is, though. Kinda similar to Thrice/Further Seems Forever.

Glassjaw - really, really bad. Weren't these guys a "big deal" in the emo/screamo community around 2000 or so? The singer's voice is absolutely horrendous (and I'm not usually one to complain about vocalists).

Sadly I saw the singer's "side project"/other band Head Automatica on the 2004 Curiosa tour. Not very good, either, but I seem to recall them having something of a disco/house/dance influence among the emo-ness, which is probably better than his petulant, bitter self-loathing and whining in Glassjaw.

Coheed and Cambria - Rush-style prog rock (with similar vocals) meets emo-core. Are Coheed fans also Mars Volta fans? That would make sense to me.

I listened to some Dredg last night. I've been trying to rediscover all the alternative bands of the 90's (or at least originated during the 90's). I'm playing their most famed album, El Cielo, right now. I'll let you know what I think of 'It Only Took One Day' when I get there

ehh, not my thing even though I like progressive stuff. like you said: "it could be worse". there's definitely better tracks on that album then the one you put on the mix but my conclusion is that I'll never try to listen to these guys again. their first album from 1998 was just a tad better but only because it was more metal
