The Fall. Chic.

Comments about your picks?

Well, you're partially right about the Fall. And mostly wrong about Chic.

Both fine bands, but greatest ever? I think not.

How can you pick just two, anyway?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

alex- 'cause it's fun to do so!

Julio Desouza, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I understand that, by why two and not, say, three?

Alright then, my picks:

KILLING JOKE and THE RAMONES

Alex in NYC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rodan. Jethro Tull.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Three is incredibly hard, there are so many bands in 3rd place, The Kinks, Earth wind and fire, The Beatles, Boney M, Sonic youth, Beach boys, Husker Du, My bloody valentine, Madness, Stereolab etc, etc that it just seemed pointless. The basic argument is that these two bands have moved me more often and in a greater way than anyone else and it's that simple. I can, and will elaborate, but I prefer to read the reactions of others especially regarding Chic cos they are something very special indeed.

As Julio says, the whole point of this is fun so why not make fun of my suggestions or substitute them for your own.

Kris England, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually, you're mostly right about Chic and mostly wrong about the Fall.

M Matos, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kraftwerk and the Clash.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

husker du out in front by a mile, with xtc leading a thousand others by only a small margin. and i'd include both the fall and chic amongst those thousands - i think both bands have contributed something positive to music.

the pinefox, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess I'd pick Pulp and the Rolling Stones, but the Fall and Chic are great choices - they'd both be in my top ten.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

ArfArf, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd go with Chic & The Free Design

Paul R, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chic's songs go on for too long and they sound too much alike. The Fall have made too many records to take in for late starters. My top two: Sly & The Family Stone and Public Enemy. They pretty much cover every angle you'd care for.

1) the classic line.up of the Skillet Lickers were more important than the Beatles (3 fiddles vs. None / no contest). 2) Royal Trux (early to mid / that last record veered dangerously twards sludgy shite).

sleestak, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link
