keith, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is so commonplace in salsa, though often brilliantly done, that I don't know where to begin.

Cow Bell Thread from rec.music.afro-latin

I hope this link works, since the url is unwieldy, to say the least.

JM, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So to answer your question, Blue Oyster Cult, (Don't Fear) The Reaper.

JM, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the way" by mod wheel aka tom middleton. there are some cowbells buried deep within the mix, but once you hear them, you will realize they are driving the whole song forward. it is a brilliant house record.

Aaron G!, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...with "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth right behind it. "Honky Tonk Woman" by the Stones also.

J Blount, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fugazi's drummer has one. It's all over Repeater.

bnw, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I could think of something that uses the TR808 cowbell (somebody help me out?). It sounds absolutely nothing like a real cowbell but it's a very distinctive electro/'80s sound that you all know, even if you think you don't. Actually I've just thought of one - 'Hanging on a String' by Loose Ends. Great record as well.

David, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't there a cowbell at the beginning of Rawhide on Scott Walker's Climate Of Hunter...

Mitch Ryder's DETROIT's version of "Rock & Roll" by Lou Reed: BEST cowbell ever, check it out. Bonus points to "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain, "Sucker" by Mott the Hoople, "Low Rider" by War. More to follow, cowbells are my thing.

Matt Riedl (veal), Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't let that stop you from feeling the groove of the cowbell Kate.

Skid Row used a cow bell on the first single from their second album. Liked the song but can't remember the name. Alas, they were never heard from again. Maybe the heavy metal crowd wasn't ready for that kind of "experimentation".

rat, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeesh, "Rock the Bells" (the b-side longer mix) by LL Cool J! I forgot. Anything by Trouble Funk is bound to have bangin' bells. "Time Has Come Today", Chambers Brothers, and of course, "Shake It" by the Limbomaniacs!

Matt Riedl (veal), Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Full Grown. It's like "Honky Tonk Women" meets...some other cool song with cowbell.

What about "Hot in Herre" or that one song on Dark Magus that's really slow and has the cool cowbell?

is that a cowbell on the second and fourth beats of She's Lost Control?

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the cowbell, "that most satisfying of all the percussion instruments" (Rick Johnson, CREEM, 1985). Go-go, "Honky Tonk Women", Guns 'n Roses and the entirety of the 1970s wouldn't be the same (wouldn't EXIST, practically) without 'em. I nominate Captain Beefheart's "Sun Zoom Spark", Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" and War's "Low Rider", probably my favourite groove of all eternity.

Dunno what Rat was talking about here - cowbell was always a staple of even the most faceless, generic metal bands of the '80s. Like, not in EVERY song, but I'd say most bands used it once or twice. I'm thinking of particular songs by Ozzy, Crue, and (uh) Ratt, aside from the ones already mentioned. Something vaguely sleazy about the instrument, I think, evoking farmers' daughters or some such.

Heh heh...I hope they used it ironically! (See my remarks above.)
