it's good, btu unfortunately not a big step forward. the EP he put out just before the album was much mellower and more mature - conor seemed to have reined himself in a bit, to my delight. the Lifting, though, is just more of the same stuff we're used to - and ltos of 6+ minute songs.

Much as I enjoy it, he could probably stand to lose the hubbub between the songs now...

It is very fine, though.

[Jerry - did you get my e-mail? Are you not replying because I hate you, or sumthin?] Why does it feel like my life can be charted as a "progression" of continuous "did you get my e-mail"s? E-mail problems etc that's why I'm abusing the board.

I bought the EP and although I like it, I feel that I don't really NEED more than one Bright Eyes album, and I really do feel it's going to be more of the same.

Can anyone make a case as to why I should buy this album if I already own Fevers and Mirrors?

what's the appeal of this guy?

what's the difference between him and Mark Eitzel?

Don Weiner, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the difference between him and Mark Eitzel?

Mark Eitzel is wussy in a cool way.

adam, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark eitzel actually has problems to sing about.

jack cole, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Eitzel will never sing anything as obnoxiously as Conor yelping "SUNRISE! SUNSET!" in an ear-piercing voice from about ten feet away from me as he did at Koo's one night. The goth in me should theoretically like him in a Nick Cave kinda way, but no, not at all.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you're gonna make conor cry by saying those mean things, he's sensitive.

I just got my copy in the mail today. Conor still needs an editor. Someone to shorten his songs and cut out the useless samples. Black humor is nice yet Conor's "I'm so fucked up that I'll make the song sound like shit to prove it by turning it into a drunken sing-a-long" is disappointing. Track 5 sounds good, with its sexy beat and all. Could do without the last couple whines or so. "Waste of Paint" is a great song. The live mp3 on the net is 50 times better then the album version. "From a Balance Beam" is nice. "You Will" is classic Bright Eyes. I am a sucker for the country sway in that steel guitar that takes over in the last few songs. So yeah, its uneven, overwrought, self-indulgent, and I'm sure I'll play the hell out of it in the next few months.

Don't you like the last track " Lets not shit ourselves"? his best song ever (just my opinion)

magiceyes, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Eitzel stopped making decent records round about a decade ago. He's gone AOI (adult orientated indie) in case you didn't notice...

I actually prefer the compilation to Fevers And Mirrors, so I can't really argue a case there - and I haven't heard the new one enough, except to agree about the comments about needing an editor (and that's no slight on his considerable ability)

Jerry, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Meh.

david h(0wie), Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A few great songs - "To Love And to be Loved (Let's Not Shit Ourselves)" is the best album closer I've heard in a while, despite its length. Also good are "From a Balance Beam", "Lover I Don't Have To Love", "You Will" and "Nothing Gets Crossed Out".

Conversely, "The Big Picture" is a hideously pretentious (and not in a good way) opener that I have NEVER gotten all the way through - or even halfway. The album as a whole could've standed to be trimmed about 10 to 15 minutes (2 or 3 songs).

three weeks pass...
What about False Advertising? That's a glorious song... even allowing for the 'mistake' bit in the middle. The boy/girl vocals on Nothing Gets Crossed Out are lovely too, even though the B&S hater in me has mild reservations.

The Big Picture, on the other hand, is probably the most horrible opening track to an otherwise enjoyable album I have ever heard.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 25 August 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

For both The Big Picture and Waste of Paint, the two most stripped down tracks, they seemed to go with really poorly recorded versions. That plus Conor's grinding of his vocals really kills two songs which are quite enjoyable live.

3 best things about the album: 1) The strings on Lover I Don't Have To Love. 2) The backup vocals on Nothing Gets Crossed Out. (Conor lurves B&S. I've seen him singing along to The Stars of Track & Field.) 3) The turning point in You Will.
