¡Olé! It's the Matador Records Poll! Part Cuatro: 151-200

Previously: Part Tres. I think it's safe to assume there's no love for Pizzicato Five in ILX? Also, will the Silkworm vote be split?

This one was very easy - Happy End of the World is one of my favorite albums.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 4 July 2010 11:38 (fourteen years ago)

whitechocolate... is probably the one of these i listen to most, so that. not my favourite gbv period.

king solomon and the surrealists (electricsound), Sunday, 4 July 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Pizzicato were just fine IMHO but I won't be voting for them

He moved to New York in March so he could train with local hot dogs. (stevie), Sunday, 4 July 2010 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

i'm the weirdo who's going w/ UTBUTS

(of course i probably haven't heard 65% of these)

easiest lay on the White House lawn → (will), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

I guess Ride The Fader, but this is the first poll where I'm not that enthusiastic about anything really... Reading it reminds me of looking through the used CD section at Kim's back in the day.

dlp9001, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

Firewater, but the drop off in quality from part 3 to 4 is big.

mizzell, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

This poll very clearly represents the point when I stopped paying attention.

Now I Got Worry

Grisly Addams (WmC), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

I cant believe anyone ever liked John Spencer Blues Explosion

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

matador released a La Peste record?

dan selzer, Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

this is the 3rd poll in a row that i've voted for JSBX over Pavement after realizing i didn't really listen to much stuff on Matador back then

some dude, Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

my faves out of the ones i've heard might be EPs -- Camp Yo La Tengo and Sunfish Holy Breakfast. The latter has maybe the best GBV song ever, "If We Wait."

tylerw, Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

selzer, i think it was a comp/reissue deal.

voted Amanita.

ian, Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

Amanita vs Kustomized At The Vanishing Point vs Ride The Fader

(brief thoughts of voting for UTBUS before realising it includes none of the songs I thought it did; briefer thoughts of voting for a Pavement single, but I already voted for the album Father to a Sister is taken off last time and I never liked Pacific Trim as much as apparently every other Pavement fan in the known universe)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

jsbx rule. but its UTBUTS for me here.

He moved to New York in March so he could train with local hot dogs. (stevie), Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

I was thinking "Who is this UTBUTS band?" Then I realised how slow I am.

Another vote for UTBUTS

Fer Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Sunday, 4 July 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

The only one of these I have is Sunfish Holy Breakfast, but I haven't listened to it in years. Then again, I'm a bit of a GBV philisitine in that I prefer the higher fidelity later stuff :o)

However, I like what little I've heard of Silkworm's Firewater. Will be looking for more.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 4 July 2010 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Any takers for the 2 Foot Flame record? NZ heroes Peter Jefferies and Michael Morley, plus Jean Smith from Mecca Normal. How did that *not* turn out to be awesome?

Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Sunday, 4 July 2010 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

there are a couple two foot flame records and they kinda rule tbh. my friend erin is a big fan.

ian, Sunday, 4 July 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

ride the fader forever.

but this is an awesome period--firewater, the magic city, utbuts, start packing are all stone classic

call all destroyer, Sunday, 4 July 2010 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

GYGAX!!!

UTBUTS is the one that never gets named as a classic/canon album when you're talking about gbv or 90s indie but then you listen to it and it's got a ton of songs on it and all of them are great

ciderpress, Sunday, 4 July 2010 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

it's my fav gbv by far

call all destroyer, Sunday, 4 July 2010 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

mostly this, with exceptions. two excellent short-form GBV releases up there: "official ironmen rally song" 7-inch and the sunfish holy breakfast EP, both great. otoh, i was losing interest in pavement & jon spencer by this point, never cared in the first place for the liked of silkworm, pizzicato five, come, run on, mecca normal, chavez, railroad jerk, etc.

voted amanita

CHALLOP: The best GbV release on this list has yet to even be mentioned!

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Monday, 5 July 2010 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

tigerbomb? it's pretty good

king solomon and the surrealists (electricsound), Monday, 5 July 2010 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

thing about tigerbomb is that i prefer the previous version of both "my valuable hunting knife" and (especially) "game of pricks", so while i like a couple of the other tracks, it's not a favorite overall

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Monday, 5 July 2010 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

I remember being really excited about that 2 Foot Flame record and not really digging it. Haven't heard it in ages though, need to check it out again.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 July 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

Atom Eyes is one my favorite GBV songs.

Evan, Monday, 5 July 2010 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

When I picked up the 2 Foot Flame record I was a big Mecca Normal fan (or at least I thought I was - I haven't heard the MN release on this list so maybe not that big though) and was pretty disappointed by it

put it on recently and for the first couple of tracks I was like, "how was I disappointed by this when I loved Bardo Pond so much back then?", cz I was struck by a resemblance between the two which I had not previously noted, but halfway through the album it was beginning to drag again

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 5 July 2010 09:02 (fourteen years ago)

Wow @ all the love for under the bushes. I didn't think it got much love from tbh obsessives, much less everyone else.

easiest lay on the White House lawn → (will), Monday, 5 July 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

as a former member of postal blowfish, UTBUTS has always seemed pretty cononical gbv to me. for me its in their top 3 (along with alien lanes and bob's not in my airforce...

He moved to New York in March so he could train with local hot dogs. (stevie), Monday, 5 July 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

original lineup of come now playing the matador vegas bash

mookinho (mookieproof), Monday, 5 July 2010 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

!!! Would love to see these folks again, still treasure the memory of them blasing through 'Off To One Side' and the like years ago in Camden. So good, definitely one of the greatest guitar bands of the nineties.

Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Monday, 5 July 2010 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

When I picked up the 2 Foot Flame record I was a big Mecca Normal fan (or at least I thought I was - I haven't heard the MN release on this list so maybe not that big though) and was pretty disappointed by it

This is me to a tee, except I was an even more massive fan of the Dead C and TKOP, and I found it just a drag to get through. Maybe it's time to listen again.

Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Monday, 5 July 2010 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

i only kind of liked dead c and mecca normal and also found 2 foot flame a massive drag

you left it on the bus with stan butler

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 10 July 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

that official iron man rally song is perhaps my favourite gbv 7" - the b-sides are all excellent

Who are these people voting for Pavement's worst album?

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 11 July 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

^^^^^^^

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 11 July 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

I don't have it, but isn't that the one with Shady Lane? Sentimental favourite, I'd suspect.

Anyway, Part Cinco is up now. I'm sticking with this till the bitter end.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 11 July 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

Pavement's worst album is either TT or CR, but I didn't vote for them here anyway...

dlp9001, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

it is neither of those!

i broke it; it was going well (electricsound), Sunday, 11 July 2010 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

Oh no! We agree on so much! Oh well. I can't imagine anything useful coming out of an argument about Pavement's worst as of 2010...
