A more difficult poll for me, personally, and I assume for a lot of ilxors, would be H&O vs. CCR.

where are we getting these people

I'm hardly new here, for better or worse.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

Roxy Music belongs on the first half of the list.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, Pavement more universally liked on ILM than Roxy Music? I don't think so.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

so to do this this I think I'm gonna do 8 at a time w/ a thread like

A vs B, C vs D, E vs F, G vs H

and then the options being

ACEG
BCEG
ADEG
etc.

then adding up the results when the poll comes in

iatee, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

The Minutemen gets quite a bit of love in their threads.

earlnash, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

they aren't in the same league as the others mentioned upthread tho.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:54 (fourteen years ago)

ILM July Madness: Round of 32 - WEST

iatee, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

BTW, Hall & Oates for the singing, duh.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

but what makes H&O more attractive? No snark, just curious.

I can handle your snark.

In my opinion, Hall & Oates just had a better feel for hooks. Also, they were a thousand times less pretentious and wanky than Steely Dan. This is not to say that Steely Dan never crafted a decent pop tune, but H&O just bury them in that capacity. Again, in my opinion.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe u of all ppl r using pop hooks to justify this

the Zeppelin vs. Sabbath thread is pretty funny/epic

has arlen specter never heard clarence thomas's laugh? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

Yes belongs on any list of canonical ILM acts, seems to me.

I vote for Steely Dan, as expected, though I do remember liking a bunch of Hall & Oates songs when I was 11-13.

husker du v. hall & oates.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 7 July 2010 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

H&O is very fine and it's nice they are cool now, but Steely Dan is in a different league altogether--and H&O would probably agree

interesting poll cause the dan & H/o are both groups I loved but grew tired of during their respective/overlapping radio-heydays. and while I will always revere Steely Dan for songwriting & overall sound, recent exposure to Hall & Oates reveals them to be better than I remembered so yeah Daryl and John all the way. comes down to the singing, I guess.

too rock for country/too country for rock & roll (m coleman), Friday, 9 July 2010 09:45 (fourteen years ago)

can i ask a really stupid question? (rhetorical, don't answer that). Are you supposed to answer a poll with a) the choice you objectively think is of greater aesthetic merit or b) whomever you fancy/prefer listening to at the moment or c) is this a moot point?

iago g., Friday, 9 July 2010 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's more a) but of course b) has a pretty great bearing on how you evaluate the former, i'm sure

last night i drove home late and popped in my Steely Dan mix that starts out FM -> Babylon Sisters -> Sign In Stranger -> My Old School and it was a joyous experience, no contest here for me

But...but...this H&O song is Dan worthy -- the sarcasm, the employment of Motown tropes, the fantastically sick organ.
