I'm a bigger Fugazi fan but not of this song.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

"Waiting Room" is the only Fugazi song I've heard of being played as sporting events, but "Song #1" would probably work about as well

some dude, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

What sporting events are these?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Redskins games!

some dude, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

ok that makes sense.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

Fugazi have given me the most self-consciously fun-free live performance I've ever experienced, so natch I went with Blur

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck Ian MacKaye.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Fucky Pussy Galore and All Her Friends.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

i never got the whole fugazi wasn't fun live, i used have a fuckin blast seeing them

the reverend dr. william wiggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I've seen them 2.5 times (my first show was shut down by the fire marshal half way through). Had great fun at each one. Of course, I'm not a stage-diving/crowd-surfing douchebag.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

Me neither, but this was about about as entertaining as being stuck at a Salvation Army jumble sale for 2 hours

I'm sure it was a Fugazi gig though

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not that familiar with the Fugazi catalog, but I read somewhere that Blur had been listening to Fugazi non-stop, and Song #2 was a stylistic tribute to Fugazi, and I can't hear that at all.
Has there ever been a "whoo-hoo!" in a Fugazi song?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

I've never heard the "Blur were listening to Fugazi" thing, but I definitely remember them fawning all over Pavement about the time the 1997 album came out (and that I could kind of hear).

If Guy or Ian ever sang "whoo-hoo" it probably wasn't intentional, but ad libbed. But now I'm thinking...what if Fugazi had been an overtly HAPPY band instead of a deadly SERIOUS band.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

'Song #1' isn't even one of Fugazi's 20 best tracks but it's still way ahead of 'Song 2'. I've basically got no time for any of Blur's attempts at a scrappy punk song bar 'Popscene'.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Went with Song 2. I listened to way more Fugazi in my time and I could never get a hold of what Blur were doing as a band. I mean, these smarmy nutbags were just throwing shit at a wall to see what would stick, weren't they? But Song 1 was truly Fugazi's corniest moment, and I even thought that back when I was a corny punk.

kkvgz, Sunday, 11 July 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

kkvgz otm re blur

I got my head checked by a jamocha.

kkvgz, Monday, 12 July 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

Like Blur alright and the song's ok, but voted for them anyway because I got no time for any of Ian MacKaye's bullshit.

Also, from Wikipedia:
Mackaye currently sings and plays baritone guitar in The Evens with drummer and vocalist Amy Farina of the Warmers. The band pride themselves on playing in non-standard locations, such as community centres, bookshops, or other atypical spaces.

Gimme a break. How about taking pride in writing a good song instead?

chromecassettes, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

I counted at least seven on the last Evens album.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

People can hate on MacKaye's bullshit as much as they want but he's still a great songwriter afaic

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say MaƱana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:46 (fifteen years ago)

Blur officially better then, cool

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

"hate on MacKaye's bullshit as much as they want but he's still a great songwriter"

I feel like the opposite is true -- anyone who has ever had to hear Song 2 fight Smashmouth for commercial and movie soundtrack spammery crown ought to appreciate MacKaye's stance of non-participation.
