normally i would take any chance to vote for pantera as worst of anything, but i might have to think about this one a bit more

Dr. Chuck Klosterman, LLC (jjjusten), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I agree, but since I didn't like them I don't think I could honestly say I was disappointed BUT it did influence a lot of real shitty albums in its aftermath.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

Stomp 442 is looking really good to me at the moment

Dr. Chuck Klosterman, LLC (jjjusten), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

if you were listening to new anthrax albums in 1998, you only have yourself to blame.

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

so true

Dr. Chuck Klosterman, LLC (jjjusten), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

normally i would take any chance to vote for pantera as worst of anything

This is precisely what I did.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

Vol. 8: The Threat is Real is a pretty good album. Most of the 50 people who heard it back then (the label went bankrupt pretty much the week it came out) would probably agree. I like that Pantera album and Diabolus in Musica, too. I see me voting for one of the Danzig albums, or Jugulator.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

uninspired slayer is still, you know, slayer. you won't die listening to those three albums. or cringe or whatever. they just pale mightily in comparison to what came before. still plenty of bands that only wish they could make an album like divine intervention.

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, was i bummed out when i bought all three of those albums and played them probably a total of five times in my life? after playing their previous albums, like, a million times? yes. i was bummed. but not as bummed as i was when i brought load home. that was a serious bummer. didn't even bother with re-load. made a good profit on my load vinyl on ebay. that was about the only upside.

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

man, this poll = WAY too much of a bad thing! i seriously doubt if you could pay me enough to listen to the lot of these even once. but then i r 1 serious poseur here.

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

You already own them, chuck probably has them all in his book! ;)

Worst 80s Albums By Established Metal Acts

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

^ chuck probably doesnt have those albums in his book.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

I like the non-covers Slayer albums. Not as good as the 80s stuff OK but they're not bad. And I don't think Harmony Corruption is really the worst 90s ND album - I like it better than Diatribes for a start, I haven't heard that many of their albums from that era so I wouldn't be surprised if, for example, Fear, Emptiness, Despair is worse. Napalm Death have been on a roll since Order Of The Leech IMO.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

It was aldo who nominated that by picking it in the metal club.
he said

Harmony Corruption is a good record produced badly, and I'm being unduly harsh on Barney. I guess my biggest complaint is that it's not Lee (which is nobody else's fault, I guess) but not far behind is that it marks the start of the change toward a more Death Metal sound which those of us who remember Arena: Napalm Death will also remember Bill and Mick claiming would be utterly ludicrous.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

Teenage aldo would be disgusted?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

gotta go with blackacidevil, the punchline to many jokes in my teenage years.

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

the blaze maiden, slayer, and testament records are all pretty decent.

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

you nominated them!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

more for their reps than my unbridled hate

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

and they are pretty mediocre. but I don't hate em.

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

you wanted the black album and sound of white noise nominated though, which was plain old ilm challops!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

never said black album - that was my intro to metallica!

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, the 90s megadeth albums aren't up there. not that those are worse than blackacidevil.

original bgm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

damn forgot to add them, oh well

beiber, benz or bentley (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

Load was by far the biggest personal disappointment. I had to pretend to myself it was good for a while.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

It doesn't even have proper crunchy guitars on it FFS.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

it's still better than reload and st anger

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

as most music is

original bgm, Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I've only heard the singles off those two.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

And actually Fuel and the St A title track are both better than anything on Load.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

no

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

honestly can't imagine anything being worse than those Metallica albums

has arlen specter never heard clarence thomas's laugh? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

So glad I didn't know aged 14 that I'd have to wait nearly 20 years for a worthwhile new Metallica album.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

death magnetic was a pile of shit

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

I like it.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

LOL HERMAN YOU ACTUALLY LISTENED TO DEATH MAGNETIC

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

Or rather I like about half of it.

xpost

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

i listened to death magnetic

i will never not listen to a metallica album

the reverend dr. william wiggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

"death magnetic" was pretty awesome...when it was called ".,,and justice for all"

latebloomer, Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

st. anger finished off any attempts i might have made to listen to metallica albums

NO NO NO NO NO ok (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

The last new Metallica I listened to was the Enter Sandman single. That convinced me that it was over.

Load and Reload are much better if you just pretend they are old classic rock records.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 July 2010 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

"Outlaw Torn" is one of Metallica's best songs -- lol @ ppl who think otherwise

ksh, Friday, 9 July 2010 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

i doubt many think 90s or 00s metallica songs are amongst their best

Hetfield also peaked as a vocalist in 1999, by the way -- listen to S&M, dude's on fire

ksh, Friday, 9 July 2010 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

no that was a different tour

the correct winner i guess

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 15 July 2010 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

sez you. I can't believe more people voted divine intervention than blackacidevil.

full disclosure: have never even bothered to listen to reload or load. all exposure was secondhand.

original bgm, Friday, 16 July 2010 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

I've never heard Load and/or Reload front to back, either. Even though I think Herman's addiction to polling is out of hand, this thread has inspired me to do so.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 16 July 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

This wasn't Herman's poll, though, it was mine... :(

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 16 July 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

My mistake; his name was at the top.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 16 July 2010 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

four years pass...

Slayer - Divine Intervention (1994) 2

omfg gtfo with this shit. Harmony Corruption didn't belong here either.

Neanderthal, Friday, 18 July 2014 05:21 (ten years ago)

two years pass...

Volume 8 is so damn horrible

Neanderthal, Friday, 23 September 2016 00:23 (eight years ago)

Imma go with those Blaze era Maiden albums, because they don't even have comedy value. They weren't disappointing by virtue of clinging to some passing trend in a really out-of-touch way like Metallica, Priest, etc were doing; they were disappointing by virtue of just being a really, really shitty, flat version of Iron Maiden. Far more disenchanting.

Definitely no winners on this list. Slayer were running out of ideas by South of Heaven (go on, grab yer pitchforks), and that butcher Scott Burns turned that Napalm Death album into a pile of soft mush with popcorn drums, just like 90% of the death metal albums he's touched...

punksishippies, Friday, 23 September 2016 04:11 (eight years ago)

oh, it's not on the list, but Jag Panzer's Dissident Alliance has gotta be the worst 90s "sellout"/groove metal attempt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfUSERGqcKU
despair...

punksishippies, Friday, 23 September 2016 04:26 (eight years ago)

thing about Pantera's Trendkill is it's not really that great of an album, but it probably has highs that beat every other album on this list. namely "10s", "Floods", "13 Steps to Nowhere", and "Suicide Note Pt 1".

there's a lot of 'go nowhere' shit that kinda sinks the rest of it, but "Floods" is v left field for them and one of my favs.

Neanderthal, Friday, 23 September 2016 05:05 (eight years ago)

Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption (1990)

this album's amazing and was generally acknowledged as such at the time and anyone who disagrees is a poser

Wimmels, Friday, 23 September 2016 11:12 (eight years ago)

Slayer were running out of ideas by South of Heaven after Seasons In The Abyss

FIXED

Wimmels, Friday, 23 September 2016 11:13 (eight years ago)

Yeah the real falloff ND album was Fear Emptiness Despair, there's absolutely nothing memorable on that album.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 September 2016 11:28 (eight years ago)
