Early Orange Juice vs Rip it Up Era OJ? Josef K? what was best. The sound of young scotland almost made me want to live there!

Tim Johnson, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Scotland NEVER produced any good bands. yet Manchester produced so many. Never go further north than Manchester (or south). Why would anyone want to live in the country that gave us Idlewild,Travis,Deacon Blue, Blue Nile.Edwyn Collins, Teenage Fanclub,BMX Bandits,Sheena easton,Gun,Slide, River detectives.

*befuddled* Good grief! Why don't you throw in Runrig while you're at it?

Having listened to The Heather's On Fire the other day, I am currently convinced that OJ was the best Chic ripoff band on the band. Along with Duran Duran. "Ye gods! Simply thrilled honey..."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, Alex Harvey, Orange juice, Josef K, Mogwai,Beta Band, Appendix Out,Boards Of Canada,Idlewild to name a few. All great scottish bands.

JJ Smith, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I much prefer the Velvet Underground/NY influenced stuff of the Postcard years than the 80s pop stuff. But Rip it up is a fine album nonetheless. Scotland was the indie scene in 80s britain. Influenced smiths, roses etc. As they all admit.

Tim, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. Orange Juice did sound like Velvet Underground way before The Strokes did. Aztec Camera were a fine band too. Roddy Frame is underrated. and when is the new Blue Nile album out?

tim, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say OJ by a million miles... all three versions of the first album included. Even if I did hate them at the time, and was a Josef K fanatic.

Only, only... you're forgetting someone. The Go-Betweens. Not the sound of Young Scotland, granted, but a Postcard band nonetheless...

Jerry, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are any Postcard bands the sound of Young Scotland? Which Young Scotland?

david h(owie), Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As opposed to old cantakerous Scotland, I guess.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes the Go-Betweens were great. Now can anyone tell me why so many people hate scotland and its bands? It always seems to be "manchester is much better" why are mancs so bitter? And shove your 'Rockism' up your arse where it belongs. You sad sad sad SAD person.

Tim, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As opposed to old cantakerous Scotland, I guess.

Did somebody call?
I was living there, and it certainly wasn't improved by that shower. Accidentally saw Josef K playing 2nd support in April '80 (supporting Bauhaus, who were supporting the mighty Magazine) - and had to hear quite a lot of Scotpop at various parties and venues throughout '80 & '81....wipe them out, ALL of them.
Tinny and Skinny and Jangly & Streak-of-piss might have been the names of the line-up in all of them: transistor-radio sounding guitar based music without the redeeming intricacy of T.Heads or the bite of GO4, strangulated baritone drunken-uncle crooning, take it away boys....

No really, take it AWAY.

Ray M, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Orange Juice win.All of it,from Felicity to I Can't Help Myself to What Prescence?!.

I think that Josef K were the best band on Postcard. They wrote concise, dramatic songs like "Crazy to Exist" and "Sorry for laughing". The band's energy and memorable tunes stopped them from being bogged-down in the angst that they wrote about. I can't decide which version of their album I like the best.

Mark Dixon, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ray M - was that the one at the Abbeyhill Astoria? If so I thought Josef K played a stormer that night.

I liked Josef K thinks like Applebush and Heads Turn.

Hey, if it's a choice between OJ and that bloated sacred cow that will forever be laden with the hackles-on-the-back-of-my-neck-rise name that is the Talking Heads, for god's sake, give me Orange Juice any day of the goddamn millennium! ARGH!

Sorry, atavistic anger coming out there. ;-) I know why the Heads are so liked around here but I can't stand them at all.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the go betweens. great comeback album too, after all these years ('the friends of rachel worth').

angelo, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At one time, I had all the postcard singles. Loved them all. Does anyone recall the Fire Engines? I think they were from Scotland - eh? I had an LP of theirs - Lubricate your Living Room - great stuff from what I recall - nice noise.

richie, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone overlooks Paul Quinn & The Independent Group, who released a lovely single and an excellent album on Postcard.

Greatest artist to have appreared on Postcard = Vic Godard, obv.

Best band = Josef K prob, Go-Betweens poss.

Best record = 1st Aztec Camera single (both sides)

Most all-round lovable life-changing rockist-baiting genius pop totem = Orange Juice.

Tim, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Go-betweens without a doubt. They got picked up on talent, not being in the right scene.
