I was wondering if you all could help me make a mix for an opening of a show of contemporary art that examines "in-between" states, dislocation, etc...on the most basic level, songs about trains, driving, flying are the most obvious: nothing too discordant (like Superchunk's Train from Kansas City, maybe the original instead?) or too slow (Joni's This Flight Tonight, for example) or too classic rawk (Going Mobile). Uptempo things like "Train in Vain are perfect. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I prefer instrumental music for art shows personally.
― surfer blood for oil (Hurting 2), Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)
Uh, well..."I Travel" by Simple Minds? (In line with Hurting's comment, they also have a slew of great, propulsive instrumentals.)

Yeah, I agree Hurting 2, except it's a contemporary show in a usually staid museum so I am trying to encourage them to loosen up a bit. Thanks everyone!

Looks like I will be doing this myself next week and I am bucking my own instrumental-only advice. It's going to be hot and the two artists use a lot of wild color and are very frenetic and messy. I'm thinking Dam Funk, dub, fuzzed out afro-beat/afro-rock type stuff, psych-synthy stuff (currently popular stuff like Bear in Heaven but maybe also older prog/fusion stuff like Jan Hammer), etc.

Wait, so is this one not about travel? b/c the absence of ROAM by the B-52s from the first mix breaks my heart.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 30 July 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, somehow it morphed into making a mix for a party, which is cool too. Roam! D'oh! Next time (btw, no one seemed to care that much about the music at the reception I made it for...I've done it for others on different subjects, tho, and people liked em)
