engineered by Ben Allen.

Here's hoping it's a throwback to the Cryptograms stuff, I didn't really care for the last album.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 9 July 2010 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

i'm bout it bout it but no way am i doing street teaming for them

am0n, Friday, 9 July 2010 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

2 mp3s is below min wage isnt it

am0n, Friday, 9 July 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

I loved both Cryptograms and Microcastle (and the bonus disc of outtakes) ((and most of the Atlas Sound stuff I've heard)) (((and heck, even the first Deerhunter album wasn't half-bad!)))... so I'm pretty sure I'll like this no matter what.

stuff that's what it is (bernard snowy), Friday, 9 July 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

i still kinda think the flourescent grey ep was the best thing they did

peel ya frap back (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 July 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor completely off the money itt, sorry dude

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

i still kinda think the flourescent grey ep was the best thing they did

me too

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

and as far as full lengths go, I'm pretty sure I've listened to the Atlas Sound LPs more than the Deerhunter ones.

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

man really? i never gave that last EP much of a chance i guess. really loved microcastle tho, so looking forward to this

we hold these goofs to be self-permabanned (k3vin k.), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

You mean the Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP thing? I kinda forgot about that, I thought it was relatively weak at the time, I guess I should revisit it.

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

oh lol i got my EPs mixed up

we hold these goofs to be self-permabanned (k3vin k.), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

This song is pretty great imo

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

All the build up to Microcastle, and the overexposure to the band around that time made that album feel really overly fussed over. Their insistence to put the "suite" in the middle of the album, the Black Lips babble in the one song, and a general vibe I get with the sequencing and composition of the rest of the songs is just: over-thought. I actually like it, but the much more quickly assembled Weird Era I feel is much better because it doesn't sound so slaved over, where they jammed out all of their great ideas instead of drew out a blueprint beforehand. Just how it sounds to me...

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

This is the part where I spent time to write a post that I thought a lot about to join in a conversation about music, and the thread dies until someone responds to something written above me. 67% chance. :D:D:D:D:D:D

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

HAHA Fuck it.

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

Weird Era's still my favorite! It's like the Deerhunter version of The White Album.

Beach Pomade (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

Don't feel bad dude, on a friday night your chances of a response are pretty low anyway, unless you're on the I'm Drunk thread!

fwiw, I pretty much agree with you, although the hype thing didn't really bug me because I'm not too plugged into the whole music blogosphere thing anymore.

1967 Dragnet episode (Z S), Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I got there just when people finished last night!

The hype doesn't bug me as much as how its huge anticipation seemed to force the band to be a bit more rigid in their creative process (not because they focused on "songs" more but the way they went about them), creating an overly thought and careful album.

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

i still kinda think the flourescent grey ep was the best thing they did

man! dudes! re-listen to Microcastle! it's better!

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

directions:

1) wave goodbye to the waves and the frozen shit that was in your heart
2) listen to Microcastle on repeat

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Microcastlol

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

did not even realize that was supposed to be a suite on microcastle.. what tracks are included in this?

♥ ᶫᵧᵒₒᵛᵤᵉ ♥ (LOLK), Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

p.s. little kids mightve been my most listened to track of 08

♥ ᶫᵧᵒₒᵛᵤᵉ ♥ (LOLK), Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

# "Microcastle" - 3:40
# "Calvary Scars" - 1:37
# "Green Jacket" - 2:09
# "Activa" - 1:49

That's the suite iirc?

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

Whatever happened to Whitney, btw? :-(

ksh, Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah thats the suite.

Evan, Saturday, 10 July 2010 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

love the suite

k3vin k., Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

a bunch of microcastle is really boring

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

I don't the title track is included in the suite.

scarfs, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

Believe, that is.

scarfs, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

i had no idea there was a suite

thomp, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think they're 'boring' but they're very textural: i mean, i've been meaning to listen to them again, and now i'm listening to them again, and i guess i've not listened to microcastle/weird era more than, say, ten times, but i really know very little of it; i sort of vaguely place the odd guitar line or sound effect or whatever; i know there's a jammy/twinkly bit coming at the end of weird era cont.; i can sort of vaguely place hooks for one or two songs if i look at the titles, but i will think that three or four tracks are 'nothing ever happened' before i actually get to 'nothing ever happened'

thomp, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know what part of the record it is, but the really slow stuff that sounds like ballads from the 50s is rough

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

i really liked his last album, it was good stuff. i'm looking forward to some new stuff.

^^ one of the best Deerhunter songs imo

saw them summer 2007 at the ICA in Boston -- awesome venue right by the water. they were fantastic

ksh, Sunday, 11 July 2010 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

go to http://halcyondigest.com/revival/ type in the pw 'tapereel' and youll be taken to a supremely annoying microsite where you can click on the tape reel and download their new single

warning the site will play music automatically and the zip contains 30 megs of worthless album art

Loving the ambient stuff they're throwing out here. The sad piano bit at the end of Primitive 3D is wonderful. Love the production too, it's really crisp!

Really nice video for new track Helicopter. Just click on the article in link: http://halcyondigest.com/helicopter/ ....not a massive fan, but this song is beautiful.

"He had some of the best tunes on microcastle, too. Adam, have you heard the new lotus plaza? I didn't even know it was in the works! Is it on kranky again?"

I played bass in a live LP lineup almost a year ago and we learned 10 or so songs, two of which were Desire Lines and Fountain Stairs, and the rest of them were on that level and some of them even better. There's also this song he did w his girlfriend singing called "Nice Weekend", that was some incredible epic 3 minute shoegaze pop that i really hope comes out on something...

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

I really like the sax on Coronado, too.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

Ace remix of "Helicopter" by Diplo & Lunice. Really like this video too, with footage from Andrey Stvolinsky's Slow Moscow

It looks better on Vimeo, but not sure if that'll embed so:

Helicopter remix video prettier

Bill A, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to this today because I heard Helicopter and liked the main hook, but overall this is some seriously weak songwriting.

Paul Shaffer is my hero. At load out there was a beautiful Vox Continental with the black keys just like the Animals used to use. After soundcheck he was really into that Farfisa I played and I complimented him on the Vox. He said he owned several. The man has taste!

awesome Adam! I knew you had played with (recorded with) LP in the past but didn't know you jammed with deerhunter too!

Z S, Friday, 25 February 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

great job not shitting your pants onstage, if that was me up there i'd be wearing extra layers

Z S, Friday, 25 February 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, was kinda an OG Deerhunter member. Quit to go to school. Now I have a degree and no job LOL. So rad of Bradford to invite me along for this!

I can't believe I wasn't insanely nervous, it really helped that I was playing again with my friends for the first time in like 6 or 7 years! Also that I had some irish coffees backstage =)

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)

Also that I had some irish coffees backstage =)

i must once again commend you for not shitting your pants onstage!

Z S, Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

was the OG member stuff back before the debut turn it up faggot release, i guess?

Z S, Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

I think first practice was when they just got that record back from the press. I still like that one a whole lot. Played 2nd drums at the time, it was Brad's idea. I learned "Lake Somerset" and probably some others off "Cryptograms", but they didn't have names yet. Been playing with him and Cole since before either bands tho. We met 10 years ago! They are the oldest friends I still play music with.

not sure why but bradford performed as joey ramone with mgmt who were performing lucifer sam last night on fallon. looks great though.

mizzell, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

Fairly convincing, imho.

Still love the titular album for this thread. Was my #2 of 2010 and just revisited it last night, still very much deserving of that spot.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 29 September 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

Also, MGMT's "Congratulation" was way underrated.

Raymond Cummings, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:13 (thirteen years ago)

It seems like people love Deerhunter/Atlas Sound more and more as time goes on but to me it's all getting more moving and less emotionally involving as it goes

Raymond Cummings, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

That should be "LESS moving"

Raymond Cummings, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:18 (thirteen years ago)

Evan was all kinds of OTM at the top of this thread

Raymond Cummings, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:20 (thirteen years ago)

i've only heard the song streaming on pitchfork, but it's awesome, favorite lotus plaza thing i've heard, stoked for the rest of the album. and i like deerhunter/atlas sound more and more as time goes on! :)

Z S, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:30 (thirteen years ago)

parallax, in particular, really rewards repeated listening. it didn't get any love here on the year end poll (which i didn't vote on because i don't know anything about music obv) but it was like top 3 2011 for me.

Z S, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:31 (thirteen years ago)

New LP LP (heh) is different than the debut, that's for sure. Still sorting out my feelings about it but it trumPs Parallax (the first AS LP I didn't "get").

Raymond Cummings, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:34 (thirteen years ago)

anxious to hear this LP lp, as 'Desire Lines' is my favorite track on Halcyon Digest.

nerve_pylon, Saturday, 11 February 2012 05:46 (thirteen years ago)

Ok damn

LP LP suddenly growing on me, big time

(sometime the act of listening to something while walking tge dog throws things into focus)

I put "Fluorescent Grey" on a Top 10 a few years ago, but with a little nudge from Christgau, I'm just getting around to this album and the new one now. I'll need more time with Monomania, but Halcyon Digest I love immediately. Especially the last three songs--even looked up the lyrics for "He Would Have Laughed," something I never do. Certain lines seemed a little too close to home...but I guess he's writing about some invented character, not himself.

clemenza, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 02:17 (eleven years ago)

he's writing abt jay reatard iirc

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 02:19 (eleven years ago)

Okay--don't know anything about him beyond that he died. I initially interpreted the lyrics literally and had the weird idea that he was writing about Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood. Anyway, sobering song for anyone drifting through middle age.

clemenza, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 02:26 (eleven years ago)

hah, i'll have to relisten with plainview in mind.

still love this record, monomania is not my thing at all but i can live with liking every other deerhunter album.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 02:31 (eleven years ago)

I've only heard the latest three Deerhunter albums and this is the only one I've really enjoyed. I should probably get round to hearing Cryptograms at some point.

I'm a late convert to this album but I really do love it. One of the few recent albums I can find that really scratches the same itch as the late-90s psyche classics like Dusk at Cubist Castle or The Soft Bulletin or Arnold's Hillside.
