yeah, that's a tough call, I don't think I can make it - Aretha was still making records, great ones, decades after Otis Redding died. I would have loved to have heard Otis Redding do something like One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. But it's hard to compare someone who died young to someone who didn't.

I think this poll is just about "Respect," in which case Aretha wins.

If it was all-encompassing, it would be a much harder contest.

Every syllable that Otis put on record in his brief life testifies to his wit, invention, and grace. I've never heard an Otis Redding cut that bored me. I love Aretha, but she suffers from having lived long enough to prove her capacity for poor judgment and bad taste. And since the Otis side of the old Otis/Jimi at Monterey LP might be my favorite record side ever, Otis wins this.

Again, THIS POLL IS ABOUT "RESPECT" THE SONG

I'm more aware now of Aretha's terrific piano playing.

oh ok if it's just about "respect" then Aretha pretty easy for me

Yes, I mean a comparison of the versions of the song. Aretha's cover is iconic but I wouldn't mind if I never heard it again. But I never tire of Otis's original.

THIS POLL IS ABOUT "RESPECT" THE SONG

In which case, Otis's performance of said song on the aforementioned LP still seals the deal in his favor.

Didn't Otis say, "That girl done stole my song!" when he heard her version?
