If it were just about anyone besides Fleetwood Mac, I'd def vote for him (even though he hasn't released anything worth a damn in about 30 years).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 10 July 2010 07:27 (fifteen years ago)

This is maybe the trickiest one so far. I felt pretty comfortable with my previous choice, but this one I just kinda had to flip a coin. Public Enemy vs. The Cure and Velvet Underground vs. Radiohead were both tough ones for me.

Moodles, Saturday, 10 July 2010 07:28 (fifteen years ago)

Public Enemy, Radiohead, Al Green, Fleetwood Mac

Gutted not to be voting for Stevie Wonder, I'd take him over anyone else in this group besides FM.

Voted Public Enemy, Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Fleetwood Mac.

The only one of these I had to stop and think about was Fleetwood Mac vs Stevie, and now I am kind of thinking I went the wrong way on that one.

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 10 July 2010 09:10 (fifteen years ago)

fleetwood mac vs stevie wonder tears me apart - compared to those two i don't care about any of the artists in the other match-ups :(

(i'm not as familiar w/al green as i want to be)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 10 July 2010 10:58 (fifteen years ago)

i'll be voting public enemy and velvet underground at least

Yeah. The other 2 ties are brutal.

^ lex otm regarding Fleetwood Mac vs Stevie Wonder and my own unfamiliarity with Al Green.

I wound up voting Cure, Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Fleetwood Mac.

Dodo Lurker (Slim and Slam), Saturday, 10 July 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)

Public Enemy, Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder

Me too. Can't believe so many people are going Al Green over the mighty 'Werk.

emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

Al Green is fucking amazing, that choice was really difficult.

ain't too proud to blog (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 July 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

I do like Al Green, but I've never understood why people love him. It's just not that exciting.

emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

PE, VU, AG, SW

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 10 July 2010 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

I love some Al Green and am bored to tears by Kraftwerk. Easy choice.

Thanks for putting the best one at the top of the list iatee.

q: and in the case of a tie?
a: uh...I'll count up the number of times the vote was mentioned on the thread - tie goes to the non-lurkers

Public Enemy, Velvet Underground, Al Green, Stevie Wonder (looks like Stevie might need the help of a tiebreaker if anyone in this bracket does).

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Cure, Velvets, Al Green, Stevie. First two easy, second two hard, mainly because I don't know enough about either Kraftwerk or Al Green to make an informed choice.

Cure vs. Public Enemy another good "peak value vs. career value" contest (not a hard one for me, but I rate the Cure's peak higher than most do.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Stevie, Stevie, Stevie, Stevie

sofatruck, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

I do like Al Green, but I've never understood why people love him. It's just not that exciting.

Depends what you mean by exciting I guess, I mean The Man-Machine isn't exactly full of visceral thrills either. I like Kraftwerk too, don't get me wrong but Al Green wins out on volume of songs I love.

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, I did realise that 'exciting' was perhaps not the right word to use when comparing to Kraftwerk. While Kraftwerk's music is not exciting in the sense of 'visceral' or 'jaunty' or whatever, the sounds they make and the possibilities of that kind of music DO excite me. Whereas I find Al Green, although perfectly pleasant, something of a dead end. It's nice, but that's about it.

emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

OK, that makes sense - I guess Al Green excites me in a pop sense, as in you've got a great vocalist (I mean one of the greatest ever) backed by a really tight band doing top-drawer material, beautifully produced. The magic comes from hearing everything lock together so well, there are all these great moments and hooks - it really is joyful, moving stuff.

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

holy crap, there will be blood

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Well, the whole point of this exercise is narrowing it down to one winner, so I'm not too bummed about anyone losing out. I just really hated to see Creedence knocked out so early.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

voted for The Cure, Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder but the only band I deeply care about here is The Cure

VU were awesome and trailblazing etc (now and then) but hating on Radiohead is straight-up terrible challops

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

Speaking as somebody who enjoys a fair bit of their recorded work, I can still see how easy it wd be to totally hate Radiohead. Earnest whiny art rock strangely not universally revered.

ain't too proud to blog (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

it's not always whiny! n.b. I don't care for the (whiny) first two albums much at all these days (although weirdly I prefer Pablo Honey to The Bends)

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

Don't hate Radiohead, just don't care about them. There are better versions of pretty much everything they do, but they can be a good entry-point for people to get into more interesting music.

emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

you don't exactly have to be a Radiohead hater to vote fuckin VU over them

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

And yeah, voting VU over Radiohead is a no-brainer. Would think VU will take this in a landslide.

emil.y, Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Whiny is a loaded word obv and I would not use it really but dude it's blatant how they could be considered whiny. They cling so hard to the bollocksy "serious sadface = important/joy and bounce and fun = trivial" opposition that you can hardly be surprised if lots of their fans swallow this without any nuance whatsoever, and if people who think that it's bollocks think they're bollocks too.

ain't too proud to blog (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 July 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

why does the image always shrink when I post it? is it readable?

iatee, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

tbh you can just do smiths eno dan prince now

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's readable

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the smart money is on smiths eno dan prince which is weird because that's also the smart vote

iatee, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

It is small, but still readable.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

A James Brown-P.Funk final would really be asking for too much, wouldn't it?

strong boy burger (KMS), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

they're both getting knocked out in the next round for sure

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

P-Funk may be Eno if lurkers are present, but I really don't think they get past The Smiths. James Brown won't get past The Beatles fo sho.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

be=beat

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah p-funk has to get past eno, smiths/fall and then steely dan/prince just to get to the *semifinals*

iatee, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

If p-funk falls to Eno, that's just all kings sadness and terror and wrongness right there. I'll probably pick Beatles over Brown myself, though it's going to break my heart.

MumblestheRevelator, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

MumblestheRevelator, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

I'd vote P-Funk over any of those except Eno and the Fall.

emil.y, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

I could see eno winning that region actually

iatee, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Well, if you vote Eno over P-Funk, they don't advance. What a pickle! xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

I know! It was a heart-rending decision.

emil.y, Thursday, 15 July 2010 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

the sheer scale of The Fall's defeat to The Smiths will determine how violently I curse each and every one of you btw
