Most Anticipated Fall 2010 Albums

I did this last time as a poll (Most Anticipated Fall 2008 Albums) and regretted it, heh. It's a bit early, as few October releases have been announced.

But I again was thinking about how high profile album releases generally don't come out in the summer (withe the exception of M.I.A.). Perhaps sales are low because people are too busy with bbqs, vacations, seeing crappy movie blockbusters and listening to standby summer soundtracks of reggae, Madonna, whatever. With the pause in big releases, it's a good time to build up some excitement for the ones that are coming. It seems there are more anticipated releases this year in August, which still seemed a long time away when I put this list together a few weeks ago.

1 Maximum Balloon Aug 24
TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek said this solo project is influenced by mid-80s era Prince, Cyndi Lauper... and Mike & the Mechanics. With friends Karen O, Katrina Ford, Little Dragon, David Byrne and TVOTR bandmates on guest vocals, this could be a really, really fun album.

2 Grinderman - Grinderman 2 Sep 14
Man, Nick Cave has been on fire in middle age. The first Grinderman sideproject really loosened him up, and the next Bad Seeds album was the best in nearly 20 years. The next one promises to take plenty of risks.

3 Torche - Songs For Singles EP Sep 21
Torche wowed a wide cross section of rock and metal fans with their second album, Meanderthal in 2008. They honed their stoner sludge rock with catchy hooks into a pretty tight signature sound, and big things are expected from them. To ease the pressure, they decided to release an EP this year, with a full-length to follow in 2011.

4 Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Aug 3
I've had mixed feelings about this band from the beginning. I bought the first album unheard the day it came out based on frothing recommendations. I was really disappointed, as I thought the songwriting was too meandering. Apparently everyone else was swept up by the simultaneously maudlin and celebratory themes of death. I was impressed by their live performance at Lollapalooza, especially that they kept up the energy level despite being dressed head-to toe in black, wool and vests in 110 degree heat. Not bad for Canadians. Neon Bible tightened up the songwriting, and though I strongly disagreed that it was anywhere close to even the top 20 best albums that year, they were moving in the right direction. There's something special about them, so this one could be it.

5 Klaxons - Surfing The Void Aug 23
Starting the concept of Nu Rave as an in joke, it threatened to make them a joke. The album was carried by three brilliant singles, including "Gravitys Rainbow" which has literally haunted my dreams. They thought they were finished with the album in early 2009, but Polydor rejected it because it was too dense and psychedelic. I've learned sometimes, what results after a label's rejection can improve the album. Hopefully we'll have a chance to hear the rejected tracks and compare.

6 Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart Sep 14
Vancouver's Black Mountain specialize in 70s style psychedelic and stoner rock that's most often associated with Swedish bands lately, more than the indie rock bands they generally tour with. There's not exactly any promise that their third one will delve into anything new, but just the fact that the first two were so great is enough for me to be excited.

7 Interpol - Interpol Sep 7
Like The Strokes, Interpol has spent the past decade trying to live up to the excitement originally generated by their debut album, with diminishing returns. After disappearing for a number of years, they seem to be prepared for a comeback. At this point it's really hard to tell if it'll be great or just okay, or suck. I'm hoping for the former.

8 The Sword - Warp Riders Aug 24
Despite being Lars Ulrich's favorite band, The Sword's second album, 2008's Gods Of The Earth, found them in a bit of a holding pattern. The new one is reported to be a big step up, a sci fi concept album inspired by the likes of Slough Feg. I'm excited.

9 Sahg - Sahg III Aug 30
These Norwegians started out with a more 70s Sabbath stoner doom vibe, but word on the new one is there is more Dio-inspired power metal and NWOBHM.

10 Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier Aug 16
To anticipate the 15th album by a band that's been together for 35 years is something to note. since Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris rejoined a decade ago, they've been releasing consistently good albums. They've managed to make this new one feel like a real event, suggesting it could be a new career peak. We've heard that one before, but I'm open minded.

I'm curious about Solange. Didn't know her beyond maybe her name until I saw her mentioned on the Janelle Monae thread. Now lex can hate me for being one of those people who jump on the Solange bandwagon after she gets more indie attention. I'm not actually jumping on the bandwagon, just interested.

I liked the last Solange album, but there's no title or release date, and there's references to a breakdown in the studio. Let's hope it's not delayed 4 years like Missy Elliott's.

She locked herself away in some house smoking weed and making music. So I think either she just got a little carried away with all of that or the breakdown is mostly a PR thing. If it was just a little temporary marijuana-induced type of thing, I doubt it's a big deal. Not that I've ever tried to make an album, I'm sure it can be draining.

I'm interested in hearing the new OMD album. I read a while back that The Human League were working a new album for this year too.

I was looking forward to hearing the new Interpol album but the songs I've not liked either of the songs i've heard so far.

Edwyn Collins has a new album called Losing Sleep out in September, pretty excited about that.

If any awesome new rock bands release a sick debut in the fall, that is what I would anticipate the most.

Most of the albums I've most anticipated in the last five or ten years (and there haven't been all that many, I don't think) have disappointed me. On the other hand, most of my favorite new albums in that time period have been unexpected pleasant surprises. So I don't worry about not anticipating very much, nor do I apologize for being fussy and not liking a ton of new stuff.

it's a mixed bag for me (between unanticipated discs that surprise me and anticipated acts that fulfill my expectations). but -- to be fair -- i can be pretty forgiving with an act once i've become a fan.

local heroes Candy Claws are to be anticipated. it is out soon. allegedly.

I have mixed feelings about stuff like Arcade Fire and Brandon Flowers, Kanye West, Of Montreal, Tricky, N.E.R.D., etc. But dire? It would be cool to see people share why they might be excited about their particular picks rather than dismiss everything before hearing 'em. Killers can annoy me, but they have a few good tunes. I saw Flowers' new video, and it wasn't bad.

Weren't a lot of people into Matthew Dear's 2007 album, Asa Breed? I thought it was great, made my top 10, and look forward to hearing what he does next.

Taylor Swift! Speak Now! Oct 25! I'm really excited. So much so that I came out of lurker mode to post this.

I'm also excited about the Brandon Flowers even though I'm not into the single.

The Black Angels album is totally awesome.

It's been a treat seeing them 4-5x live over the years in Austin, watching them evolve since their first EP.

i'm only really caring for the latest solo work from animal collective, otherwise i hardly keep up to date with what the latest buzz bands are coming out with this year. im a tool and generally adhere by p4k's "best new music" to select my yearly purchases. very excited for tomboy, even though i know i'm going to be immediately disappointed with it by psychological-compare-to-person-pitch default.

Juliana, la Reyna del Mambo is coming out with a U.S. album release (her U.S. album debut, I guess), but I think possibly all the songs have been around for at least a couple years. Some of what will be on that (except presumably no live tracks), and incidentally, this is merengue in case people are wondering what to expect:
