A few months back I broke out of a long dry spell and started searching for some new stuff to listen to partially by getting a new PC and a subscription to emusic. Through that site I founve found quite a few of these newer funk bands, most of these are instrumental and kind of retro looking back at early 70s cop show/blaxploitation funk sound or mix in afrobeat styles. Either way, I have liked what I found quite a bit.
Antibalas/Daktaris - heard a bit before, but finally got some of their tunes via emusic. Good stuff.El Michaels AffairThe Sound StylisticsThe Budos Band - These guys have some catchy tunes. The Heliocentrics
It's kind of like after people making tunes like this on Ninja Tune or Compost, people said heck with it, I can play that stuff and put together some bands. Which is kind of cool as you can't beat a live drummer. I guess the Cinematic Orchestra would also count for this as they are a band more than a production team like say Jazzaova or a similar act.
I don't think any of these bands are that huge, but is there really much crossover between them? Are there other acts doing this thing (or even maybe going live P=Funk/G-Funk sound) that I should check? How about bands doing this in a jazz fusion or maybe bringing in more electronics in context?

Too self-consciously retro, from what I've heard.

this sounds weird, but the sound is already dated. and not in a 60s/70s way, but in a late 90s/ early 2000s way. the Breakestra (lead by miles tackett (son of little feat's fred tackett) used to be the house band at a club called the Breaks i'd go to in college. cut chemist was the house dj. freestyle fellowship and other backpackery LA hip hop groups performed pretty regularly. pre pop stardom black eyed peas would dance amongst everyone else.
some other groups i liked were Poets of Rhythmhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzMC24Rc7oc
and a side project of that band, whitefield brothers (i think i liked these guys the most since they were a bit different than just dusty 45 funk)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po0eL9HLaQw
just clicking around youtube, found Magic Drum Orchestra. pretty coolhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-xycrZ1kYU

I like that Poets of Rhythm album and I like what Budos Band I've heard. Most of this stuff though seems samey and oddly clinical.

Like that Ari Roze one; is the original the same tempo? Most of this modern funk is too uptempo for an old timer like me.
