i've not been able to connect since last night. website seems to be down too. the only thing is, it doesn't every *try* to connect, just gives upt he second i open it,w hich has me suspecting i'm at fault.

matthew james, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope. I'm just downloading the new suede album.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't work for me, sadly.

Matt DC, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is very odd. i'm off to stay in france on tuesday, and i'd just found someone who had pussy galore's version of exile on mainstreet. where you all connection from? maybe it's a regional problem.

matthew james, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaah you too. Doesn't want to connect and the website is gone. I fear something's up. :(

Omar, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can get onto the site but i never yet downloaded anything (and don't really know how)

mark s, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's working perfectly for me (was working fine last night too). For those having problems I suspect it's just a temporary thing.

Miranda, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is down for me for a long time now

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

from reading the bulletin board, i think the problem is the same as the last time this happened. find your 'hosts' or 'lmhosts' file and add: "195.74.211.135 www.soulseek.org" (no quotes) at the bottom using a text editor and save.

the other possible solution may be downloading the following soulseek version: http://sk.nikita.cx/slsk137temp.exe which supposedly might bypass the domain search at startup (or something). I post this here because last night there was an admin message mentioning this file as a quick fix for people not able to log on. i have no idea whether it works or not.

bottom line: soulseek is working, i've had mine on for the past two days. try the first solution. btw on my comp the path is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (xp pro)

Ron, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

http://sk.nikita.cx/slsk137temp.exe

just tried this. it works.

:-)

baxter wingnut, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems fine to me - had it on all night and until noon sunday. i think the software itself is a little weak (i want a napster-style display where everyone who's downloading from you shows up at the top and you don't have to SCROLL to find out what's DLing) but i've gotten things by damenbart, whitehouse, nargaroth, and dat politics i never thought i'd find...

your null fame, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

couldn't find those drivers, but the temp file works. just seems to be even more inefficient and crash prone than the normal version. and all the people i want files from seem to be off as they've not sorted the problem. dammit!

matthew james, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I added that extra info to the 'hosts' file and I got a message saying something like: Upgrade to version 1.38, but only if you can access www.slsk.org

When I got there, I found the following text:

"We're having problems with our old domain, www.soulseek.org, and are working to try and restore it. In the meanwhile, please make sure you are using version 138 to be able to connect."

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've yet to succeed in downloading a single mp3 from soulseek, every attempt ending with 'Failed' in red letters. Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

stevo, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i might suspect your net connection. one think i noticed in the past couple of days is that from time to time when my connection to the soulseek server was cut for a minute or two, my downloads/uploads continued uninterrupted. so i'm thinking that once a direct p2p connection has been arranged via the server, your actual file transfer doesn't run through soulseek at all. sorry if i'm either saying something a)incorrect or b)obvious, i don't really know much about file sharing software or networking or computers for that matter.

Ron, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one thing i just learned the hard way: don't select 'get place in line' to check where you are at in somebody's queue. i bumped myself back to the end of a 200 person list twice after waiting for over a day. oops

Ron, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just managed to get Soulseek working on MacOS X, and am downloading my first file (huzzah!).

Graham, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the last three days both Soulseek and WinMX have failed to connect. Somethings up. I can smell it.

Lord Custos III, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

graham, how in the WORLD did ya achieve that?

nathalie, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's *so* temperamental. always has been. none more so than usual in the last couple of days.

piscesboy, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Slsk been ackin' the fool since last night. Searches for 'the beatles' pull up three or four tracks. What gives, p2p?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't had sou1s33k work well for me in several months. Searches like "David Bowie" come up with maybe ten or eleven tracks.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

when they came for Slsk.....

gr8080, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

i can find stuff ok but the queues are lonnnng. f u ex-oinkers

, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

I think they might be filtering certain search requests. Like I had the new White Stripes album on my wishlist for months and it never came up with anything. I got it off bittorrent eventually. Whereas I can search for obscure anarcho-punk bands and find loads of old demos ripped from cassettes fairly easily.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

Which if true is kinda worrying cos that's what happened to Audiogalaxy.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

Is there a new version, maybe?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

Hasn't been for ages. There is a test version on a different server but I've not found it to be any better (worse, probably).

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmm...are our days numbered?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

luckily i now have enough music to last me the rest of my life

akm, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't had an Slsk issues recently. Every so often, search is fruitless, but for the most part, it's been solid.

In fact, I went on free jazz download binge, largely inspired by the OP10 free jazz records list here on ILM. THANKS ILM!

Brooker Buckingham, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

Whereas I can search for obscure anarcho-punk bands and find loads of old demos ripped from cassettes fairly easily.

this is the kind of stuff that makes file sharing great. you can go buy white stripes at best buy for $12, ya cheap bastard.

rockapads, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

Why would I want to? It's not very good.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

then why would you steal it?

elan, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't used it in months. When i do its just for chat. Hardly got anything off it this year apart from the odd live gig. I just dont seem to download much anymore.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

I "stole" it to see if it's any good. It isn't. Now I don't need to waste money on it. If Jack "Whingey" White wants me to spend money on his music he should make better music.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

lol knackered

and what, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

Someone that was only sharing 44 files just got a song off me without me noticing. I banned there ass and sent them this message: "OH HO YOU IN THE BANNED NOW BAD BUBBA!". They haven't replied.

andi, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

Do you sit there continually checking everyone who downloads from you?

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes, when i'm actually at the computer and doing things. non-sharers are scum.

andi, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

non-sharers are scum.

You just said they were sharing.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

44 files. half of that was album artwork. that isn't sharing.

andi, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

LOL @ Slsk fascists.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

i dont care as long as they share more music than theyre downloading.

, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

well, when i have other people waiting in queue, that are sharers, it just seems really uncool to let leechers download from me. i guess i could just bump the leechers to the back, but fuck dat.

andi, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Are non-sharers generally people who think they're free from RIAA scrutiny?

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

i imagine a lot of them probably are, the rest probably just don't know what they're doing.

andi, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

Are they free from RIAA scrutiny? I have lost track of where cases against downloaders are by now, but wasn't the idea always that the RIAA took legal action against people SHARING songs, rather than downloading them?

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

that was my impression but I don't know or remember where I got it from or whether it's true anymore. the only things I share are tracks and albums by artists and labels not associated with the RIAA though.

akm, Thursday, 8 November 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

only stiffing the indies, good man.

ledge, Thursday, 8 November 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

down with music!

akm, Thursday, 8 November 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

microsoft limit on tcp connections causing anyone's 515k's to crash?

Dominique, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

was working for me just minutes ago but I'm running it through emulated xp, not sure if that would make a difference though (shouldn't)

akm, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 05:21 (seventeen years ago)

works on mine. Are you sure its tcp? Check your Event Viewer (control panel -> admin tools) and see if there's any warnings for tcpip (under System). And if it is, get a system patch - make sure you know what you're doing though.

Roz, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

(10:17)(smilehigh) i've just unbanned you. when i checked your shares you had a lot of folders but most of them had but a single track in them. not a big problem anyway. feel free to resume your download

UH. douche.

ledge, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Immediate Ban and Ignore, that'll learn him. :-)

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

am dead impressed with new version though. had put off installing 'cause i tried it once and it failed, but now it's up and i'm back to the good old days of d/ling faster than i can rip, even without privileges.

ledge, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

No probs with the software itself per se...but I DID spend an hour just last night undoing the damage resulting from some goof with eight thousand files in a single frickin' folder. I mean, it's generous to share so many files, but chrissakes, guy...

I've been putting off switching to the new version. In time, in time.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

When that happens, cut off your internet connection first, and then launch slsk and delete the dl lines. Will be much faster.
