Adverts, easily.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, aren't there a couple of Stiff Records box sets? Any reason to go for one versus the other?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

It's odd, they don't have the same track listing but they serve a similar purpose.

Umm, maybe the cheaper one? I got the first one, the "Big Stiff Box" came later...

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

Wreckless Eric for me, loved it then, still love it now.

Bill E, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 07:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this is the Adverts or Wreckless Eric. I'm not much of an Elvis Costello fan. The Damned single is OK - I like the B side best.

I hear Wreckless Eric won't play that song live?

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 08:49 (fifteen years ago)

Not so fond of "Problem Child", but the rest of these are all Very Good Indeed. Bought at the time: Max Wall, The Adverts, Sex & Drugs. Sex & Drugs just nudges ahead of Wreckless Eric's Kevin Ayers-inspired classic.

Was there a BUY1 to BUY5 poll? Did I miss it?

Ah, found it.

I hear Wreckless Eric won't play that song live?

that's a nonsense.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I've heard him play it live, c.2004, supporting The Magic Band.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 15 July 2010 09:38 (fifteen years ago)

A much better list than the first 10. Voted "Alison", but most of the Elvis Costello titles are very strong here, as is also "Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll"

Well, the only real clunker is the Damned one, so OK i take yr point.

Although the best ones from Buy1 to 10 are better....

Mark G, Friday, 16 July 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't "So It Goes" by Nick Lowe on Stiff?

I hear Wreckless Eric won't play that song live?

that's a nonsense.

What I'm basing this off is anecdotes of someone asking him to sign their copy of it recently and him sneering and writing "Ancient History" on it, and someone eles saying he threw a strop because too many people were shouting out for it. To be fair that doesn't mean he doesn't play it, but he certainly doesn't seem too happy about doing it.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 17 July 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

He's a bit pissed off with it because he continues to do good stuff even now. His new songs are as good as his old stuff (last time I checked anyway, "Bungalow Hi" to be fair...)

It's not a given that people continue to do good stuff.

Anyway, last time out he did a "I'd go the whole wide world for England" footie themesong. For Fierce Panda. It wasn't entirely serious.

All great, but had to go for Watching the detectives.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 31 July 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

The poll results are fair enough. But please don't overlook the splendor of "Suffice To Say" and "England's Glory" amid this pile of unusually brilliant records!
