The Stooges vs. Steely fucking Dan?

the aztec mystic pizza (Stevie D), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

This was the easiest vote so far.

Moodles, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 00:56 (fourteen years ago)

was for me too

Smiths, Eno, Steely Dan, Prince

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

Easy votes for The Fall and The Stooges. I like Prince and Black Sabbath pretty much equally, but I think I'm going to go for Prince here. Parliament/Funkadelic vs Eno = why to braek heart?

Eno will have to win this, but I'm not happy.

emil.y, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

The Smiths, Brian Eno, Steely Dan, Prince

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

Smiths, Eno, Stooges, Prince. Easiest one for me so far too. So everybody thinks this is easy but doesn't agree who easily wins?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

Smiths, Eno, Steely Dan, Prince

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

The Smiths, Parliament/Funkadelic, Steely Dan, Black Sabbath and I don't even like the Smiths all that much.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:30 (fourteen years ago)

The Smiths, Parliament/Funkadelic, The Stooges, Prince, with only the choice between Stooges and Steely Dan causing any consternation on my part.

MumblestheRevelator, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago)

Smiths Eno Steely Dan Prince here too.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:39 (fourteen years ago)

Smiths, Eno, Dan, Prince

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

6 of those so far

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:31 (fourteen years ago)

maybe the "Smiths, Eno, Dan, Prince"-ers should lay low for awhile so as to avoid backlash

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

afaik i've never heard the fall or the smiths, but everything i've ever read about morrisey makes me hate him, whereas mes seems like a loveable oscar the grouch type. other three were easy: pfunk, the dan, that skinny motherfucker with the high voice

Mister AOR (The Reverend), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:46 (fourteen years ago)

...that skinny motherfucker with the high voice

I thought that you said you never heard the Smiths. *rimshot*

strong boy burger (KMS), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

moz is still misunderstood.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

I sure hope that the lurker contingent is in this thread voting for the Fall.

strong boy burger (KMS), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

The Smiths, Brian Eno, Steely Dan, Black Sabbath

Boo Radley (Bee OK), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

smiths, p-funk, stooges, prince. honk if you agree.

symsymsym, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:33 (fourteen years ago)

smiths pfunk stooges sabbath

voting against prince killed me tho

bearotaur say "I am so sorry" to me! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:35 (fourteen years ago)

prince is going to knock out sabbath in the first round which is totally infuriating to me.

These are fun polls iatee!

Noise Pictorial Works Juvenile Fiction (Abbott), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

I'm disappointed by some of the eliminations already, but not heartbroken. This will get pretty fucking ugly before it's all over, though.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:45 (fourteen years ago)

thanks abbott!

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

The Smiths, Brian Eno, Steely Dan, Prince; easiest vote so far though I love the Stooges. I like a few songs by the Fall & by Black Sabbath but find their monoliths of rock a bit hard to penetrate. I like "Maggot Brain" (the song) an awful lot; the rest might click at some point but so far it hasn't, & certainly hasn't compared to Eno.

Euler, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 06:40 (fourteen years ago)

The Fall, Eno, Steely Dan, Prince

Only difficult choice was Steely Dan vs. Stooges — I loved the Stooges more in my early teens than I'll probably ever like Steely Dan, but I'd rather listen to the latter these days.

eatandoph, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

euler and I have a nearly identical take on this! except I like a half dozen p-funk songs instead of one.

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

God, I'm not even that big a fan of the Stooges, but I will be MAD if Steely Dan win this. They're terrible.

emil.y, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

save your anger for when they win the tournament

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

Black Sabbath vs. Prince is the hard one here but I'll go with Sabbath 'cos I've been listening to them loads recently. The Stooges and The Fall are great bands but neither of them mean a huge deal to me the way Steely Dan and The Smiths do/have done.

Smiths, Eno, Steely Dan, Sabbath then.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

Fall, Brian Eno, Steely Dan, Prince

Never liked the Smiths though totally unsurprised at their dominating so far. Actually don't care at all about Dan v. Stooges (sorry emil.y).

elephant rob, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

these are literally the most hateful match-ups ever - prince, eno and steely dan all get to win in a bloodbath while The Fall loses out

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

srsly iatee you have enraged me. ENRAGED.

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

don't actually have an opinion on pfunk vs eno or dan vs stooges, gonna go with the underdog on both I think

The Fall, Pfunk, Stooges, Prince

and hey - I've even gotten into The Smiths a bit recently! But come now.

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

I don't understand all the Eno love when he's up against Parliament. I mean like I think I've heard the best Eno music, and he's great and all, but nowhere near as important to me as PFunk.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

kind of lolling at the idea of ILM being PFunk-friendly

Fee Fie Fo, FUNFNFUINFLFF! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

(particularly when compared to Eno)

Fee Fie Fo, FUNFNFUINFLFF! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

pfunk and stooges seem way more fun than eno or dan, if not so beautifully-crafted or 'perfect', but ILM needs to hate fun less

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

also cannot WAIT for Prince to savage The Dan*

*please can this happen, pleeeeease

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

My idea of fun is killing everyone.

Euler, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

I love(d) the Smiths but it's gotta be the Fall. Kind of worried my answers are the whitest answers ever: The Smiths, Brian Eno, The Stooges, Black Sabbath was my gut reaction, though I like Prince and Sabbath about equally, so maybe I'll do that just to feel less corny and indie.

(Kind of tired of the Stooges tbh and growing ever fonder of "Peg", but the rest of Steely Dan's output not so much, and it's not like they'll be short of votes on ILM)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

uh, the Fall, Eno, Stooges, Sabs was my gut reaction. Good job I didn't actually vote at the same time as c&ping!

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

hey guess what I just noticed

REM wasn't part of these polls!

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

kind of lolling at the idea of ILM being PFunk-friendly

You know, they don't get talked about much around here, do they? And I don't even listen to them much any more. But I heard them in passing from time-to-time and the reaction is visceral.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

hear

kkvgz, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

I <3 P-Funk (more Funk than P though), but in my mind Eno brings in so many other ideas and contexts and other artists I also like. And imo some of his stuff is fun ("Backwater", My Life In...). Likewise, in my universe the Fall are often fun and funny, not dour and grouchy like a lot of people seem to think.

REM wasn't part of these polls!

def considered it, but I decided the hardcore REM luv wasn't universal enough for them to get very far. and even most people who love early REM could easily reason themselves out of voting for them.

iatee, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

The Fall, Parliament/Funkadelic, The Stooges, Black Sabbath

None of them were that hard this time. Black Sabbath/Prince I hesitated over. And I do like the Smiths & Eno a lot but not enough to have to think about it.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

Fall vs. Smiths is actually the toughest choice here for me.

But I guess it's Fall, Eno, Dan, Prince

Grisly Addams (WmC), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

WmC is the anti-me, apparently

bearotaur say "I am so sorry" to me! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

Grisly Addams (WmC), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

and even most people who love early REM could easily reason themselves out of voting for them.

not me, I would have voted for them over any of these 8 except Prince. But the REM people have their own poll for every single REM album, plus an omnibus poll drawn from top finishers of the album polls, so, y'know, don't cry for me acoleuthic.
