I just saw Molginy at the FrancoFolies festival in Montreal. And thier whole set was of songs written around gimmicks. For example they would be jumping the music would stop and they kept jumping, and one song they had an over 3 min. pause in the middle where they stood perfectly still. It reminds me of the similar gimmicks of the Helms (from boston)

I'm a real sucker for gimmicks. I'd like to nominate maybe some of Aphex's records, particularly "I Care Because You Do" and "Come To Daddy EP" as being very gimmicky.

matmos.

Matmos seconded.

All of the Fluxus stuff.

Everything else I can think of is based around non-musical gimmickry, and I'm not sure if that counts.

gimmick-wise: the guy who has the robot drummer.

Musicwise: Matmos, although I wouldn't call them gimmicky, becuase I think that sounds like it's denoting what I think are strong ideas and great music.

Matmos, although I wouldn't call them gimmicky, becuase I think that sounds like it's denoting what I think are strong ideas and great music.

the thing is with matmos is that the methods they use to create their music are much more interesting than the music itself. therefore, gimmicky.

more gimmicks:

tracy and the plastics
