Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

I'm afraid things are about to get really fucking white after this round

Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

Can vs. Notorious B.I.G.

this is like Ghana/Uruguay for me, where the Beach Boys = USA and Can = Ghana and so I am passively supporting Ghana-Can because I like them and "yeah go Africa" etc. but I am also not gonna be bitter if Biggie wins because I secretly want Can to lose simply because they beat the Beach Boys - even though I listen to / like Can more than Biggie.

Rolling Stones vs. Joy Division/New Order

I think the Rolling Stones' 1968-1973 period is flawless, but I've always liked the band and never loved them. JD/NO also sounds like a double degree I should be looking into or something.

Kate Bush vs. Bob Dylan

upset in the making? Kate Bush beat H&O by such a margin that I went from "maybe I should have left off Kate Bush" to "maybe I should have left off Hall and Oates." otoh she's against Bob Dylan.

The Beatles vs. James Brown

one thing I really like about The Beatles is that you hear them so often in public places. whenever I go to cafes or grocery stores or NYC rock clubs I get to hear The Beatles and it just makes my day so much better.

Notorious B.I.G., Joy Division/New Order, Bob Dylan, James Brown

B.I.G. and Dylan easily for me, but the other two killed me. Already maybe regretting picking New Order over the Stones, but on a fundamental level I find New Order more likable than the Stones, who I often hate even when I obsess over them. I was prepared to go for Beatles over Brown, but then I though about "Hot Pants" and then I listened to "Hot Pants" and then I felt like I could listen to that groove forever without getting tired of it and then I used a random number generator and decided evens meant Beatles and odds meant Brown and then I voted for Brown.

if bob dylan and kate bush actually duked it out bob dylan would start by whining and twanging on his acoustic guitar and kate would be like blam blam on her piano and drown him out with her pipes, then bob dylan would be like "a-haaa!" and pull out his electric guitar and half his pussy fanbase would cry and go home and he'd strum his guitar and it would sound a little buzzier and crunchier but kate would pull out a massive synth and it'd go "blaaaaooowwww" and she'd go "waaaaah-ooooooooooo!" and his hair would blow back and turn grey and then he'd blow on his harmonica and kate would get a headache and then be really angry and she'd go "sccrrrreeeeeeeeee!" and lighting would shoot out of the sky and destroy bob dylan. Then she'd sit on the beach and watch the wind and the water and the sand erode his body in the golden light of an eternal sunset.

Notorious B.I.G., Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Beatles. I like a couple of Can songs but don't get what the big deal is. I love NO tons and tons but c'mon. I don't see myself voting against Dylan in any poll. JB vs Beatles is kinda tough but not really.

I'm voting Can, and that's about as far as I've got. Both acts in the other 3 pairs are big canonical bands that I like a few things by, don't like the omg genius reverence surrounding, and can't get too worked up about either way.

I think my Americanness is showing in this round. I just haven't been all that exposed to New Order (outside of a couple of huge hits, and yes I know the Stones are not American) or Kate Bush. Though karl's awesome post almost persuaded me to vote for her anyway.

Can, Joy Division/New Order, Bob Dylan, The Beatles

I don't like Joy Division much, but I like the NO that I like better than the RS I like. Wish that JB had been paired up with someone else this early. He's a real heavyweight in my pantheon, but can't hold up to all the nostalgia and emotion tied up in the Beatles.

I don't like Can as much as any of these guys, but I like them better than Biggy. Thinking back about it though, I wish I could vote for Beach Boys instead of them, but what can you do.

kkvgz, Friday, 16 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah some of these pairings are really a bummer - pissed that Can knocked out the BB's by ONE VOTE.

also - is it me or does anyone else suspect that after this round on it's gonna be all white folks

Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 16 July 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

Can had a black guy... what am I talking about, they had three!

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Friday, 16 July 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Can vs. Biggie is a bit unfair on Biggie IMO. Now Biggie vs. Kate Bush, I would have relished.

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Friday, 16 July 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

xpost to Shakey

Could be. I voted for Stevie and Prince in the other bracket and would be kind of shocked if they both lost--do people really like Steely Dan with that much passion? JB versus the Beatles is harsh though--I'm with kkvgz: I can't not vote for the band I first became aware of as a band, the Beatles are just too important for how I got into music as a thing in the first place.

elephant rob, Friday, 16 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Notorious B.I.G., Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Beatles

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

is it me or does anyone else suspect that after this round on it's gonna be all white folks

Prince may have a good chance (hopefully), and I'd say Stevie's about 50/50. And yeah, Can weren't all white, so whoever wins out of that battle, there's still at least one non-white person left in the competition.

There are only 3.5 females left in the running at the moment, which is pretty piss-poor (Nico counts as a .5, btw).

emil.y, Friday, 16 July 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

I think Stevie's gonna get his ass handed to him

Prince vs. the Dan is a much closer call - thinking the poptimist crew might tip it in Prince's favor, since he's more acceptable to them as an influential presence on current pop trends than aging coked-out rockers the Dan

Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 16 July 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't want to nitpick these polls too much--"canon" talk can devolve tediously, and these are just a diverting excuse to tell Smiths fans they suck. But, it occurs to me that all of these bands are from (iirc) either the US, the UK, Germany, or Sweden. Which is kinda weird.

I recognise that you are making a statement about the music that each respective band makes, but what criteria exactly are you using to quantify this 'whiteness'? Is it possible for colour/racial identity to inhere in soundwaves?

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

So what you are saying is not 'JD/NO are about 41738912491349x whiter than the Stones' but rather 'the Rolling Stones create music whose inspiration can be located in the spectrum of music made by African migrants'.

There are so many aberrations in this poll. I have no clue how Joy Division/New Order lost to the Stones, and I don't even like Joy Division! Seems weird to imagine a bunch of ilxors sitting at home listening to Wild Horses or jamming out to It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It).

right I'm not saying they're the most popular band on this site or whatever, just that it's not that hard to imagine lots of people sitting at home rocking out to them, esp cause there's a bunch of threads that are like "oh man I am rocking out to exile" or whatever.
