yeah I know at least a couple of these have essentially only been touring sidemen, but 'favourite' does not have to mean 'best'...it can mean 'most accomplished', 'most attractive', or 'least likely to send one into an apoplectic rage'...

are SP the biggest serial girl-bassist-in-a-band-of-dudes band ever?

saw them with Fiorentino on bass this week, alright show but it's not like you can ever really pick out basslines at a Smashing Pumpkins show anyway.

I have no opinion on the merits of the bassists Corgan picks but have to say they all have excellent names.

did any of them ever actually play on an album or did pumpkinhead play all the parts in the studio? seems like something he would do.

scott seward, Saturday, 17 July 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

I feel it's impossible for me not to think of D'arcy as the definite SP bassist. She is the least attractive of the bunch... the one that looks the most vulnerable... I feel her overall appearance mirrors the angst-ridden melancholic mood of their early albums and this is why I think she's the most perfect bassist for SP even if she isn't the most talented of the bunch.

For style and looks alone I'd go with Melissa. She's looks great when she's doing her thing.

― scott seward,

Wretzky is the credited bassist on the Smashing Pumpkins' first five studio albums: Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore, and Machina/The Machines of God. It was confirmed by both her and Corgan, however, that Corgan recorded the bass tracks for Siamese Dream because he could complete them in far fewer takes.

wait I thought Melissa played on Machina...

yeah Billy is option #5 bcz of SD; there were rumors he played bass on most of Gish too (but Darcy sang lead on Daydream--nobody can take that away from her...)

D'arcy recorded bass for Machina but departed shortly after the record was completed. Melissa was recruited for the "Sacred and Profane" tour in support of the album and appeared in the videos accompanying its release.

Yeah. I always wonder how they first hooked up since he must be old enough to be Billy's father, and why Billy has never made him the permanent bassist. Maybe he prefers a female bassist in his touring band?

Billy Corgan has revealed that the band’s bass player is one of the two girls pictured on the cover of Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream album.

Nicole Fiorentino, who is 31 years old now, would have been around 13 when the album was released in 1993.

She joined the Chicago band last year, but has only just revealed to Corgan that she was pictured on the cover of the album.

Corgan tweeted last night from Twitter.com/Billy: "Just found out the weirdest news: our bass player Nicole just admitted she is one of the girls on the cover of Siamese Dream."

He didn’t reveal which of the two girls pictured on the cover Fiorentino was.

He added that the reason he’d only just found out was that Fiorentino "said she didn't want us to know because she thought maybe we wouldn't let her be in the band."

Fiorentino is a former member of Spinnerette and Veruca Salt. She is Smashing Pumpkins’ fourth bass player, and second since they reformed.
