Subjective response to 'Rising' lyrics pending a) my interrogator is unarmed, and b) delivery of large quantities of substances to make me happy

Let's throw the truth away, we'll find it in this kiss...

Dunno if this is on topic or not q, but the constant juxtaposition of tthe word "kiss" and violent imagery ("blood/rain/fire/dust/ etc") is kind of striking on this LP. Kinda creeping me out actually.

I'm not quite sure what the point of that article is. Is it Springsteens's fault that he's reached iconic stature? Should he shy away from it? Why? I think the hype machine was in overdrive mainly because it's his first album with the E Street band in many years and many boomers are now in positions in the media where they can actually get 3 hours of Bruce on the nation's most popular morning show. Where's the harm? Certainly the fact that some of the songs were inspired by the events of Sept 11 gave TV some of that melodrama that they love so. As for him being nice to Couric and being upbeat onstage (I did not see it so I'm going by what he said) where's the harm? Would it have been better if he acted like it was a funeral? Should he have been rude to Katie? It just seems like this guy is pissed off that he's middle aged and writing music reviews for some second rate newspaper in New Jersey.
