The Random but very Recognized Tunes Poll

Keeping to the Western world only, as I suspect most people here aren't familiar with which songs are the most recognized ones in China, India or even Japan.

No National anthems have been included, although most of the ones from bigger countries would have fitted in perfectly.

Oh, and, I am sure a lot of stuff is left out, but better concentrate on what's in here :)

Auld Lang Syne

jed_, Saturday, 17 July 2010 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen, Geir has lost his mind.

(But I voted anyway. Perhaps I've lost mine.)

Dodo Lurker (Slim and Slam), Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

Which "Air" are we talking about here - Bach's Air on the G String, Talking Heads' "Air", or something else?

Dodo Lurker (Slim and Slam), Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

This is a completely arbitrary gathering, but whatever the hell. I'll vote.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

DO they have "Turkey in the Straw" in Norway? This is my #1 song of that type, especially since it is pumped by every ice cream truck all day every day.

Oh yeah, I voted for "In the Mood." It was probably my first ever favorite song. My grandparents had a Glenn Miller Orchestra record that I would make them play every time I went to their house. "In the Mood." Over. And over. And over. And over. I'm sure they never wanted to hear it again by the time I exhausted my interest for the day(s).

U LEFT OUT I KILL EVERYTHING I FUCK

johnny crunch, Saturday, 17 July 2010 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man, I have totally heard "In The Mood" coming from an ice cream truck. In fact, it was the first song I ever heard from an ice cream truck.

I wonder if they have ice cream trucks in Norway.

trucks in norway are made of ice cream.

In Norway, the ice cream eats you!

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 17 July 2010 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

This is a completely arbitrary gathering

I guess what they have in common is that, whether you like them or not, you've probably heard all of them a zillion times. :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 17 July 2010 08:31 (fourteen years ago)

You could probably have a poll alone on classical music that people have heard a million times without realizing it: Canon in D, Night on Bald Mountain, Sabre Dance, Chopin's Marche funèbre, Wagner's Bridal Chorus, Ride of the Valkyries, Also sprach Zarathustra, Blue Danube Waltz, Flight of the Bumblebee, among many others.

The Four Seasons vs. Spring from The Four Seasons

goth (crüt), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

voted beethoven's fifth

goth (crüt), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know any of these songs.

Which Windows Startup Tune? 95, 98, Vista XP?

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

cool thread idea from the geirmeister imo

some dude, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

I've heard of the Internationale, but have never actually heard it. After listening to it on youtube, I hope to never hear it again. La Marseillaise is a better revolutionary song in that vein. I have no idea what Greenfields even is, but all the rest I've heard before even if without realizing it.

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

I absolutely love Greensleaves.

Most glaring omission to me is Pachabel's Canon in D.

Cow Bingo (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

No Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach = :(
Would've preferred a different Gershwin but I guess that is the one with the best claim to it and I might vote for it anyway.

Quite tempted by Hall of the Mountain King currently.

Quite tempted by Aquavit.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

Would rather have just one a box of Cornettos.

Must find out where to buy akvavit in this country, had some great stuff brought back from Norway a few years ago.

Which Windows Startup Tune? 95, 98, Vista XP?

important question

iatee, Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

Brian Eno composed the Windows 95 startup music. I wonder what kind of payday he got for those six seconds.

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 17 July 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

No Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach = :(

"White Christmas" is in there.

Brian told XFM that he was paid $35,000 for the sound.

A year after Voyager 1 & 2 launched in 1977 - accompanied by their fabled Golden Records - SNL did a newscaster skit with Steve Martin.

He said something to the effect of, the first interstellar communication has been received from aliens, and their request is to send more Chuck Berry.

goth (crüt), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

sofatruck, Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

"Let It Be" is one of my least favorite beatles tunes :/
