Wow, I'd never stopped to realise how many albums I love are from the year of my birth. Came here to post my favourite number 1 hit singles from the year, clicked on the links to drag it up to 10, and am now amazed at how I could ever whittle it down to 10.

Kudos to Elvis Telecom for "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," an amazing song I don't think gets enough attention.

Love that song a lot. Always perplexed that it gets ignord since it's one of the infamous electric songs at the Newport Folk Fest. BTW, the Kooper, Stills, Bloomfield version on Super Session is a knock-out concussion.

"It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," an amazing song I don't think gets enough attention.

weird. i've always thought "it takes a lot..." was widely considered one of dylan's classics. but now that i think about it, i have no idea why i thought that, except that i love the song, too, and its lyrics have been paid homage by steely dan (first album title), warren zevon ("poor poor pitiful me" lyrics), and maybe possibly the grateful dead ("china cat sunflower" lyrics). i think the steely dan thing, particularly, made me just assume it was a standard.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 30 July 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

i've always thought "it takes a lot..." was widely considered one of dylan's classics

me too!! it's my fave song on H'way 61- i wish he'd kept the title "phantom engineer" though

"It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," an amazing song I don't think gets enough attention.

I was probably being overly subjective there: i.e., it's easily one of my dozen favorite Dylan songs, but can't be one of his 30 or so most famous. (I informally scrolled through the songlist on bobdylan.com to test this.) I'd never even picked up on the Steely Dan connection before.
