¡Olé! It's the Matador Records Poll! Part Seis: 251-300

Message Bookmarked

Previously: Part Cinco. Two big candidates for victory jump right out in this one, unless I've sorely misjudged the lay of the land. Also: this is where Matador starts turning into the 'whatever Warp Records and Chemikal Underground are putting out' label, while the European arm picks and chooses from the West Coast up-and-comers. Discuss!

Thinking about the Chemikal Underground thing made me wonder: how come Matador never released any Delgados stuff in North America? Am I missing something obvious?

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 17 July 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

much of the delgados stuff came out on beggars offshoot mantra which was probably a worldwide thing

voting for dig me out because moon pix probably has it in the bag

Fantasma.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 18 July 2010 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

First response was Music Has The Right..., but on reflection, Moon Pix is a fucking amazing album.. or collection of sonically/thematically-linked songs. So, in the end, that's what I voted for.

Lostandfound, Sunday, 18 July 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

tempted by sugarshit sharp, which is my favourite Pussy Galore of all time. but listened to controversial negro again on my way home from work friday, and its so god damned awesome i have to vote for it.

As a Britisher it'd feel weird voting for BoC on a Matador poll, which leaves me with Fantasma, Star City, Pardon My French, or the Guitar Wolf 7". I love Fantasma the most, but the others feel more... Matador-ish. Hmm!

(Do releases get cat #s as soon as anyone thinks they might maybe happen one day? Trying to work out why Shady Lane - the 2nd single off BtC, right? - has a higher number than Terror Twilight. Would explain why so many things which already have numbers get cancelled, too.)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 18 July 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

moon pix, the first matador album i ever bought.

snuh, Sunday, 18 July 2010 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

I just whined in the last poll about people voting for a single, but I'm not a huge GBV fan and "I Am A Tree" is by far one of my favorite songs of theirs, so I think I'm gonna vote for that.

These polls are reminding me that I was kind of young back then and coming in on the tail end of the '90s Matador stuff, outside of the big bands everyone knows a lot of these people I only know, like, their one song from What's Up Matador? or some other comp. Back in '98 a friend sent me a bunch of big Matador promos a couple months before they were out, I was excited about Moon Pix but it kinda disappointed me at the time but it grew on me, hated the Belle & Sebastian and Boards of Canada albums.

In retrospect I think one of the reasons it took me years to really post on ilx heavily and find a social niche was that it was pretty alienating at first that Belle & Sebastian and Boards of Canada seemed like hugely revered contemporary artists when I first got here.

some dude, Sunday, 18 July 2010 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

I don't understand the reverence for Belle & Sebastian at all. It's just twee shite to my ears. But I've never felt alienated by my opinion on them or anyone else; I've often swam against the current of peers when it comes to my musical taste.

BoC

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 18 July 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I don't mean it was really some major thorn in my side, everyone disagrees about everything. I just mean it was funny that when I first came here it seemed like randomly two acts I'd gotten promos of and totally dismissed 3-4 years earlier were treated as a big big deal.

some dude, Sunday, 18 July 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Solex vs. Pussy Galore. Have to think about it a little.

dlp9001, Sunday, 18 July 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Voted dig me out, but if you're feeling sinister and fantasma are both solid classics in my book and I quite like terror twilight and moon pix as well. tough choice really

Replace belle and sebastian & boc with Dexy's and Blur and that was my case.

to this day when people refer to BOC I automatically assume they mean Blue Oyster Cult

anyway voted B&S, this is kinda where I started to get off the bus with Matador tbh

Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 23 July 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

In the end I voted Pell Mell because it is as if it was assembled in a factory from a list of things I like about music, and yes I do also mean to imply that it's maybe a little sterile and unsurprising, but I don't care.

I will care if Fantasma doesn't do well, though, cz I'd have to admit that is a much better record in a whole lot of ways, and I do love it.

If the Fuck record was all as good as the songs I remembered from it it'd be in with a shout too, but I forgot about the other, oh, 8 tracks.

piskie sour (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, voted Solex. Pussy Galore EP is better, but it's another reissue. B&S was a reissue too, albeit with a shorter time frame. Solex is the only band on the above list that I can imagine listening to in 2010 for any reason other than nostalgia. Little Honda is actually a pretty good Jesus and Mary Chain song, but not good enough to get a vote.

dlp9001, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

easiest of these for me so far: Boards

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Very close between Fantasma and If You're Feeling Sinister, went for the latter.

skip, Saturday, 24 July 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

I gave "Terror Twilite" some love because I feel it's the most unjustly maligned Pavement LP. Was tempted mostly by "Moonpix" and BOC.

Robert Necrofrost, Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

We might have more of a vote split than I imagined!

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

Went with Call The Doctor. That Come album was okay, but it pales in comparison to their earlier stuff imo.
