I'm talking about the period when UKG was inescapable in the charts and everyone from Sugababes to Victoria Beckham to Usher was grabbing themselves a UKG remix. I know some UKG fans kinda saw these remixes as the beginning of the end for the scene, but I really rate some of the results, and just wondered what everyone elses favorites were? Any recommendations in general would be great. IMO this is still pretty awesome...

Sugababes had perfect voices for the UKG make over. They actually had a few UKG inspired tunes on their debut album.

De La Soul - All Good (MJ Cole Remix) - mainly for how MJ matches the beat to the first verse.
Pink - There You Go (Sovereign Remix)
Mis-Teeq - B With Me (Bump & Flex Remix)
BB Mak - Still On Your Side (Artful Dodger Remix)
Mya - Case of the Ex (O.B.O. Remix) - i think was its name
Sisqo - Thong Song (Artful Dodger Remix)
Sia - Little Man (El-B Remix)

Argh I meant Exemen. For El-B try his remix of Dane Bowers' "Shut Up And Forget About It".
Re the "Buddy X" remix, love that version but the best version is actually this slamming 4X4 one i have on the Pure Silk Third Dimension mix which is actively brutalist. Must upload it for you lex.

It's kinda like a forerunner for "Mindreader".

err i know ilm's guidelines and all but this is super rare and has been out of print practically as soon as it saw the light of day and is one of my all-time favourite tunes and i'm guessing some of you would like to have it too so, what the heck:

"Originally it was quite rare. I paid £20 for mine from a DJ I was on radio with. They all got recalled from sale because the decision was made to pull it. The rumour was Agent X were upset that it sounded like Decoy."
it does sound a bit like "Decoy"!
btw on that note, feeling this Agent X 2013 mix of "Girls Like Us"
https://soundcloud.com/agentx/agent-x-x-b15-girls-like-us
they're unparalleled at having a go at different mutations/manifestations of ukg over the years, right? all the other guys draw the line somewhere at some point but these guys (there's FOUR of them now apparently) even had a few half-hearted stabs at uk funky and now this ("Ark Light" is also real nice)
― Mind Taker, Sunday, 8 September 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)
still waiting on Wideboys to give house & bass a try
had my hopes raised for a second when i saw they did a 'breakdance' remix of Priyanka Chopra and hoped they jumped on the skreamix electro-boogie bandwagon but no :\
― Mind Taker, Sunday, 8 September 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)
lol ironically enough that remix sounds to me like a straight rip of josh butler's mix of hector couto 'rare love'
http://soundcloud.com/joshbutler/hector-couto-rare-love-remix
in actual fact the way some of the old dudes have started to undraw their lines as the birmingham/basshouse revival sound begins to swing their way is what's interesting me most right now - check out grant nelson suddenly turning into a right hipster and getting one of his principle homagists in on his show (low steppa is on a superb run at the moment in fairness)
http://www.mixcloud.com/grantnelson/housecall-ep95-220813-incl-a-guest-mix-from-low-steppa/
and here he is pretending to be shadow child
http://soundcloud.com/grantnelson/little-nikki-little-nikki-says
mt are you familiar with scott diaz' stuff this year? cos he is very crucial right now imo - tom shorterz canes this one on 2:31 (and rightly so, it's great)

even though the bubble in the interzone has rather deflated again this year sunship's odd bits are still pretty awesome btw! (they only get to remix the z-list now apparently :/)

probably wouldnt be one of the cooler tunes in a house n bass set but i'd reckon this one passes muster ok
― r|t|c, Sunday, 8 September 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)
love that Caserta rmx but don't recall checking out any other Scott Diaz - what should i try out?
don't mind Low Steppa but his stuff so far has been an amorphous indistinct blob to me, bits of which i enjoy purely on the 'oooh i like this chord sequence' basis ("Reach Out"!)
― Mind Taker, Sunday, 8 September 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)
haha didn't know that one, it certainly bears a passing resemblance :D
― Mind Taker, Sunday, 8 September 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)
xp haha well yeah tbh but everything's more about hitting the spot (and feeling out what spots to hit) these days than brand nu flexes
i mean i agree low steppa is a total carpetbagger but eh fuck it these go off in a big way
http://soundcloud.com/low-steppa/free-download-creampie-lowhttp://soundcloud.com/low-steppa/low-steppa-dots-previewhttp://soundcloud.com/low-steppa/free-download-for-my-people
diaz put this ep out recently, classic style stuff, 'allnighter' is good
http://soundcloud.com/scottdiaz/sets/therapyeppaparecords/http://soundcloud.com/scottdiaz/brandnewladyscottdiazmix
but i'm kind of seeing him as one of the main bridges in tentatively livelying up the sort of soulful house retirement crew sound and bringing it in line with trendy revival - like this (vintage but slamming) mix wouldnt have appeared in a package before
http://soundcloud.com/scottdiaz/joylondondub
or like this thing that topped the traxsource charts for a while is a lot more garagey than normal (even if it is still fairly innocuous)
http://soundcloud.com/localtalk/claes-rosen-daydreaming-lt035
i mean yeah it could just be that i'm overextrapolating cos i'm really into soulful and stuff this year but idk if shorterz is keeping an eye on it then i'll pick up the scent
― r|t|c, Sunday, 8 September 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)
i mean that 'give me joy' london dub there just sounds like ejeca (who over in hipsterland are remixing romanthony meanwhile), these nostalgic strategies feel like they wanna connect someplace eventually
or everyone everywhere's just doing the same uninspired retreads of course :)
― r|t|c, Sunday, 8 September 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)
hey cheers mt, a lost Bump n Flex tune cut from the same cloth as the 'all I do' dub!
sort of in return, but also to field a nagging question to you guys, here's my (fairly decent quality) vinyl rip of 'Misteeq - All I want' (KL dub)' that I've had for years.
http://www68.zippyshare.com/v/3114104/file.html
the question being - is KL another Grant Nelson alias or what? Its got that dancehally boom-boom tick sound. Don't have access to the original record anymore to check but the discogs entry reveals nothing. It has to be him right?
― Benny B, Monday, 9 September 2013 09:30 (twelve years ago)
On holiday so can't check these properly, but I'm pretty sure KL was a Sunship alias.
― Tim F, Monday, 9 September 2013 09:43 (twelve years ago)
cheers tim I'm sure you're right, its just it sounds a bit too dark and, dare i say it, proto-dubsteppy to be sunship. Wouldn't have guessed it was them.
― Benny B, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:11 (twelve years ago)
mirroring the the very post in this thread, check out this slinky Chris Mack dub of Another Level. Had to up it myself!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGby1V5G9Yo
― Benny B, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:22 (twelve years ago)
Yeah from memory KL was a deliberate basement sideline for Sunship, though I kinda feel at times the shear dreadiness of stuff like "Cheque 1, 2 (Rockers Dub)" is underrated or overlooked or whatevs.
― Tim F, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:24 (twelve years ago)
slinky. there's the word. 1. Stealthy, furtive, and sneaking. 2. Graceful, sinuous, and sleek. where did slinkiness ever get to i wonder, it's become like the lost eldorado of musical vibes. in uk funky it only glittered in the corners if you were v lucky, otherwise i'm kinda drawing a blank as to when it's been of concern anywhere in the last idk, decade?? slinky
― r|t|c, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:52 (twelve years ago)
There was a lot of slinky minimal back in the day. The girlier end of 2008-vintage funky was pretty slinky as well but that vibe did subsequently disappear.
― Matt DC, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:06 (twelve years ago)
no i can't really think of anything i'd call slinky since, what 2000, '99 even? (thinking mainly of dance music but maybe it applies more generally too?). Nowt slinky like that chris mack dub anyway. In UK funky I was thinking maybe something like 'what goes around' by fuzzy logik but listening back now its too propulsive and clattery to fit the description - you can't really sneak up on someone furtively when you're whacking away on bongos can you? The more recent progeny of ukg never seem to go for that slinky vibe either - too caffeinated and hyped up.
― Benny B, Monday, 9 September 2013 23:07 (twelve years ago)
I think there are a lot of factors playing into the decline of slinkiness but one key is that the amount of bass needs to be just so, not too heavy and not too light. Most post-garage genres (bassline and dubstep in particular though in different ways obv) overplay their hand basswise, and then consistent with that, even when they're going for subtlety they underline it too much, it's "subtle" but you'd never get the sort of lightness of touch you got in actual Groove Chronicles or Steve Gurley, let alone "Sweet Like Chocolate".
Disclosure probably come closest at their best, though again a bit too extroverted and caffeinated as Benny notes.
Whereas UK funky mostly underplayed its hand basswise, and overplayed everything else, sounding too top-heavy (brassy / clattery / etc.) to really slink past.
My favourite slinky garage classics are "Madness on the Streets" and "Telefunkin".
