Rye Rye

Last.fm's recommendation engine just introduced me to Rye Rye, who seems to be the American version of M.I.A. that everyone wanted Santigold to be. I see she's been mentioned sporadically on the board across several threads; anyone got recommendations on specific tracks to seek out?

also some dude, who are the loads of female MCs doing similar stuff who are better, because I sure as hell want to check them out

she's kind of just a random chick that was on a few of Blaqstarr's early local hits in Baltimore, never really gave her much thought until she was suddenly signed and given a bunch of media exposure...she has some good tracks but imo she's never the best thing about them.

the Get Em Mamis are a good example of Bmore party girl rap that I think is way better.

yeah this is an all timer

assuming you've heard "Bang" but that song is pretty awesome. also she did the hook on Blaqstarr's original "Hands Up, Thumbs Down," which is a classic. (xpost)

some dude, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

was gonna come in here to post about bang, cuz yeah

ha I was about to be all "well that's okay" and then it hit the double-time section

i loved the get 'em mamis track that was on that 'the wire'-associated comp, always meant to follow up

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

get em mamis did a great remix of jazmine sullivan's "bust your windows" too - i like their "when you see us" but this is the first i've heard "cold summer" and it's def the best i've heard from them.

rye rye's ok from what i've heard, this is my favourite thing she's done (with the count & sinden) -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP4nc14454o

but in terms of pop-oriented girl-rap i really like this from cheaslauen (no idea who she is!) -

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

haha, i was literally wonderng what happened to this chick the other day but i couldnt remember her name

plax (ico), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

dan have you heard any of the jerk girls?

I've heard bits here and there; jerk didn't really resonate with me until this summer at my (23-year-old) cousin's wedding, when I was able to actually FEEL that bass

there was one track in particular that you posted a while ago that was hot like fire but I can't remember what it was

"Cold Summer" sounds like standard urban radio on Friday night. Not bad, but not WOW either.

This is the banger, though. Thanks, Busy Signal!

they are like children that were raised in a cult where you're only allowed to listen to lil kim

u dad (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

i think new era is nastier tbh, the first verse of "do it now" is O_O - the first few bars might be too much even for me

new era got these niggas on they knees first
and yeah he back up in the pussy like a rebirth
he got the pussy wet, wetter than a sea surf
sexy bitch, the pussy tighter than a pink shirt
yeah yeah, dick is good but the head better
and i get more mouth than a red letter
and your bitch ain't fly, she a dead feather
and he ain't pickin up the phone cuz we in bed together
all he know how to do is lick right
aw naw, he can't even throw the dick right
but he better work it out and get his shit right
cuz my pussy and his mouth gon have a lip fight

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

i should mention that the Get Em Mamis released an awesome free album last year and are releasing tracks from a new mixtape on their site this summer:

http://rcrdlbl.com/2009/09/08/exclusive_new_download_get_em_mamis_terawesome_mixtape

i should also mention that those girls love me and bought me a beer last time i saw them as a caveat/braggin/etc

some dude, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

ten months pass...

So there's a new track with Robyn that they're pushing as a single to try and get this album to finally get released or whatever, and it's ok, but this random collaboration with a fashion designer or some shit is straight fire.

she is basically a walking ball of joy

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Her opening set for MIA last year was astounding. Doubletime raps while juking and dancing and twirling all over the place, and never out of breath. Plus, she's a total sweetheart. When we got dragged up on stage during 'Boyz' she chatted with us backstage after for a bit.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 16 June 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I thought she was about a bazillion times better than MIA

the song with Rye Rye on the new DDm record is good, first thing she's done w/o Blaqstarr that i really dig

internet somebody (some dude), Friday, 23 March 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

I like Boom Boom, but I'm not yet sure how much of that is due to hearing it the same time as watching the corny video.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 March 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

Apparently she was in that 21 Jump Street movie

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

the timing is super unfortunate since everyone is basically going to be calling her a Nicki Minaj clone

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno she's not very Minaj when you get down to it

got to interview her recently and she's nice and very sharp, album's hit and miss for me but the live show's pretty impressive

judas, a scary ho (some dude), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

I am not arguing that the comparison goes beyond the shallowest of superficialities, really just that they both have dayglo beats and squeaky voices

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Sunday, 20 May 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

now that i think of it "Boom Boom" may have been made pretty deliberately in the aftermath of "Super Bass"
