Albums I'm Thinking About Getting from the Year 2000 (part 1 of a proposed 10-part series)

Because I'm slow, impoverished, obsessed with the '70s, and my access to the Internet is somewhat erratic, I missed a lot of music from this decade. Some of this was intentional avoidance; a lot of it wasn't. I started roaming on rym and making album wishlists for every year of this past decade, and I thought maybe I would post them on here, and all of you can tell me which ones are the best, keep me from buying any duds, or point out any glaring omissions (and there will prolley be a lot of them)...

Here's the list I had compiled for Y2K:

Quasimoto - The Unseen
Acid Mothers Temple - La Novia
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Queens of the Stone Age - R
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
High on Fire - The Art of Self Defense
Shellac - 1000 Hurts
Melt-Banana - Teeny Shiny
Avey Tare & Panda Bear - Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
Sonic Youth - NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Boris - Flood
Joan of Arc - The Gap
OOIOO - Gold & Green
Capleton - More Fire
Orange Goblin - The Big Black
Spiritual Beggars - Ad Astra
Acid Mothers Temple - Troubadours from Another Heavenly World
Isobella - Akasha
Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone...
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
d'Angelo - Voodoo
Yo La Tengo - and Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
The Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth
Doves - Lost Souls
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Morphine - The Night
Jackie-O Motherfucker - Magick Fire Music
The Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are
Spring Heel Jack - Disappeared
Roy Montgomery - The Allegory of Hearing
The Volebeats - Mosquito Spiral

(NOTE: I doubt all the lists will be this long; I got a little carried away at first...)

anything else you suggest should go on there?

The Uncanny X-Men feat. Jorma Kaukonen & Grace Slick (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

Morphine - The Night

I would only get this if you already like Morphine's 90s stuff like Yes or Cure for Pain.

elephant rob, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

dont bother:

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Yo La Tengo - and Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

This album fucking sucks and is a colossal waste of time, despite what everyone else says.

he does NOT have the training (HI DERE), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

cosign on Quasimoto - The Unseen, that's an awesomely bizarre album, possible Madlib's finest moment (i'm sure there are dissenters on that).

long-time blojo subscriber (elephant rob), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

my favorite madlib, too

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

I like Cure for Pain a LOT actually...

surfing through the SPIN archives on Google books, here's a few more:

Pearl Jam - Binaural
Broadcast - The Noise Made by People
Blonde Redhead - Melody for Certain Damaged Lemons
...and You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Madonna
Royal Trux - Pound for Pound

(was Operation: Doomsday released in '00? I used to have that one but I never actually listened to it all the way through; the temptation was too great to skip to "Dead Bent" which is easily one of my favorite songs of all time...)

The Uncanny X-Men feat. Jorma Kaukonen & Grace Slick (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

Ghosts & Flowers is a great SY record, but it's not exactly typical of them - i like to think of it as their poetry album.
and Friends of Rachel Worth is top shelf Go-Betweens, IMO, if'n you go for their stuff at all

fried ice cream is a reality (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

I like Cure for Pain a LOT actually...

Oh, you should probably dig The Night then too, I think--it's been a long while since I heard it. I would say Yes is still more important, but maybe you've already got that.

I <3 Broadcast immensely. If you like this, then get it:

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

two more:

Couch - Fantasy
Kelis - Kaleidoscope

The Uncanny X-Men feat. Jorma Kaukonen & Grace Slick (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

No list of albums from 2000 is complete without the self-titled album by The Glands. This is my favorite indie rock record of the entire decade.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

I used to read SPIN a lot in '99/'00/'01, and I was searching through the archives for two album reviews that I remember from around that time...one of them was the Couch album, which supposedly re-constitutes surf music using Neu! 2 (a great album) and Daydream Nation (a v. good album) as reference points...

the other one I could not find. It said something about replacing the notion of the guitar hero with the guitar victim, along the lines of Loveless and Tom Verlaine's Dreamtime. (!)

The Uncanny X-Men feat. Jorma Kaukonen & Grace Slick (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Top 3 things here:

Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica

Don't bother with the Sonic Youth one unless you're a completist - it's easily their weakest (proper) album.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

so nobody likes At the Drive In, huh? iirc that One Armed Scissor was decently cool, at the time at least...

some of the others are also enjoyable.

one man meme-denier - jol in? (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

that OOIOO album is a keeper. Kaleidoscope is also a favorite.

also
Amon Tobin - Supermodified
Luomo - Vocalcity

Mosquepanik at Ground Zero (abanana), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
High on Fire - The Art of Self Defense
Shellac - 1000 Hurts

Um, except the two below Doves. No opinion on those, never heard them.

DON'T CARE FOR:

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Melt-Banana - Teeny Shiny
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR

ahahahahaha you just alienated DrownedInSound's entire posting commonweal

Melt-Banana are so much better live tbf

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

melt banana are fantastic live, seen them a bunch of times. but i do not enjoy their records.

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

^^^^pretty much this, although cell-scape has its moments

one of the best live bands I've seen...watching the magic unfold IRL is transformative

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

suspect that the same is/was true of ATDI. heard stories at the time, but never saw them.

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

The High on Fire, Orange Goblin, and Electric Wizard LPs are their respective bests IMO.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

Whoa, yeah, did not see that Electric Wizard addendum. Would totally recommend that one with no hesitation.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah Luomo is another great one. ATD-I were great at the time and yep, amazing live but I wouldn't really put the album on these days.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

La Novia may be the best AMT album, but I don't pull it out regularly.
I mean, it's just one epic jam iirc. But as far as that thing goes, it's pretty incredible. Great live version on "Live in Japan."
I remember liking Troubadours, I had it on a cdr. I think it's an all synth chill-out record.
I don't think I have that cdr anymore.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

if you've made it 10 years w/out at the drive-in you're probably good for the duration tbh

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

La Novia is unavailable from Amazon :(

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

if I found $100 on the sidewalk right now, I would prolley go fix my car...

but I might be tempted instead to buy these albums:

Quasimoto
Ghostface
OOIOO
Boris ($25 though! For a used copy!)
Shellac
High on Fire
Electric Wizard
Isobella
AMT - Troubadours
Joan of Arc
...maybe Sonic Youth

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

that Luomo sounds pretty cool too though...Couch also...

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

(though I guess Couch is 1999...stupid SPIN)

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

XTRMNTR is one of my absolute favorite albums; it's beyond brilliant. So is Since I Left You

Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

don't spend money on ghosts and flowers. i mean listen to it first, at least. if you don't like it you will never put it on again and it will have been money wasted. i rate the fuck outta relationship of command though, huge record for me

young monet (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

These are all classics.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
d'Angelo - Voodoo
The Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

...maybe Sonic Youth

seriously it is not worth it considering d fucking angelo is on the list and made the best soul record of about 20 years (between new amerykah pt 1 and what ever prince album was 20 years before that).

one man meme-denier - jol in? (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

LOL I thought Luomo was Von LMO!

d'angelo is that good?

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

May possibly merit consideration:

Black Box Recorder - The Facts of Life
Barbara Morgenstern - Fjorden

d'angelo is that good?

^^^ this

I mean, I've read ilxors I like and trust fawning over this, but I've always resisted for some reason. Do I need to immediately remedy this situation? y/n

Unlike other folks here, I still fuck w/ ATDI from time to time. At the time I was a corny indie/emo fuxxor and I liked their earlier stuff more, but now I think their 2000 album holds up the best. Really energetic, somewhat slickly produced badass hard rock!

The Moon and Antarctica is still great too.

But yeah, Supreme Clientele is the one you NEED to get.

underneath the moon and the stars (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh man ilm made me buy that avalanches record. very funny, guys! like having someone put a kick me sign on your back.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

yes i do like AMT, but you should be choosy on what you buy. You dont need everything they put out.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

la novia is one of their strongest records. vinyl version is different than the cd version, right? i seem to remember that. i had both at one point. now i own neither after my great amt purge.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

I think i have the cd version, it rules.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

I still listen to often:

Queens of the Stone Age - R [Interested in the dbl reissue coming soon]
OOIOO - Gold & Green
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
High on Fire - The Art of Self Defense
Boris - Flood
d'Angelo - Voodoo

I like these but rarely listen anymore:

Quasimoto - The Unseen
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Shellac - 1000 Hurts
Avey Tare & Panda Bear - Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Yo La Tengo - and Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
The Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
The Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

Scott mentioned Oui. I'll stan for most of The Sea and Cake albums and Archer Prewitt solo stuff if not for assorted tracks

Also I think this is from 2000:
Thingy - 'To the Innocent'
I'll stan for the other Thingy stuff as well

@( * O * )@ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

Good list, but gotta recommend these too:

PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
Sussan Deyhim - Madman Of God: Divine Love Songs of the Persian Sufi Masters
Hawksley Workman - For Him And The Girls [First and best album]

Plenty of others not yet mentioned, like Sigur Ros, 16 Horsepower, Delgados, Nação Zumbi, Entombed, Lord Weird Slough Feg, Iron Maiden, Blackalicious, Clientele. But the first three are biggies for me.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

Still own Electric Wizard (on CD shelf); might still own the Modest Mouse and/or
Primal Scream (in storage, maybe, though more likely I got rid of them both.) Used to own others. Don't miss them.

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I strongly second "The W," Reflection Eternal and Deltron 3030 recommendations. Here's what I wrote about the W a few months ago:

I've been listening to this and seriously considering it for my best of the decade. The production is just ridiculous, almost every song changes beats multiple times and there's just so many weird tricks - different drum patterns thrown in for a couple seconds, etc. It's really avant-garde but within the framework of a pretty accessible rap album, and I agree that all the guest spots fit perfectly and don't take away from the Wu feel.

Best example imo and maybe one of the best rap singles of the decade is "Protect ya neck (the jump off)" All 9 mcs -Cappa filling in for ODB- kill it in different ways. RZA's call and response: Bobby! Then Ghost comes in and gives the song a new swing with his singsongy flow. U-God comes in and the beat drops out, replaced with a new funky martial drum pattern and gothy synths, and GZA goes last with an extended track-and-field metaphor as the main sample comes back in then it ends on some funky guitar stabs, all over a danceable but not too shiny beat.

underneath the moon and the stars (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

still good: Clinic- Internal Wrangler

mizzell, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

I'll second the Black box Recorder, Grandaddy and Broadcast suggestions.

I'd adds these to the list too.

Goldfrapp-Felt Mountain
Ute Lemper-Punishing Kiss
Eels-Daisies of the Galaxy
Elastica-The Menace
Super Furry Animals-Mwng
Common-Like Water for Chocolate
Gorkys Zygotic Mynci-The Blue Trees

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

One more important addition:
John Shough - 'Ultra Vega'

@( * O * )@ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

For a year generally considered as a lull between trends (aside from teen-pop and R&B), 2000 was classic for albums. Love all of these:

Kelis – Kaleidoscope
Lemon Jelly – Lemon Jelly.KY
Sigur Ros – Agaetis Byrjun
Doves – Lost Souls

Ghostface Killah – Supreme Clientele
Radiohead – Kid A
Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP
Johnny Cash – American Recordings III

Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain
Saint Etienne – Sound Of Water
Queens Of The Stone Age – Rated R

Belle & Sebastian – Fold Your Hands Child…
Dandy Warhols – Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia
Blackalicious – NIA
David Holmes – Bow Down To The Exit Sign

i've also heard stankonia but i couldn't get into it very much...i guess i was expecting a little bit more mellow vibe a la aquemini.

i had this problem for a long time and could never truly love stankonia until i got over this expectation. u gotta take it for the teched-up extravaganza it is

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 July 2010 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

i feel you rev...i owned stankonia and had the aforementioned problems with as discussed, and then a friend of mine borrowed and broke the CD in half on accident, so I never got a chance to accept it as it is, so to say...

what is this?

that modernist album is boring

hobbes, Friday, 23 July 2010 08:51 (fourteen years ago)

just buy the stax singles box set or whatever and then decide if you're ready to get thrown down by the music of the year 2000

hobbes, Friday, 23 July 2010 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Friday, 23 July 2010 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

christ a lot of the albums on the first list really remind me of leaving home and having my mind blown on a daily basis.

Id second 'spirit they;ve gone..' as the best AC album though id pick up the double pack reissue of that and danse manatee fatcat put out as thats another ace album though much noisier and improv sounding

As is typically his gift, xhuxk is the only person who can combine a smattering of albums I can't stand (Everclear, Dropkick Murphys, Nelly, Atmosphere), a few *shrug* choices (Z-Trip, Lifter Puller, Ludacris), a couple albums that my little sister liked when she was 12 (Kandi, Hoku), a sprinkling of modern "country" (Joe Dee Messina, Sara Evans), and a bunch of shit I've never heard of... and turn out a really, really interesting list somehow.

don't get ppl being super-jazzed for 2000, it's a weird transitional year to me. d 'n' b and queercore were dropping off, all the stuff I was really digging at the time was released before or after 2000. some kinda lull happening in providence. I'm struggling to even come up with a top 10 tho I'm sure there's some stuff I'm missing.

cat power - covers record
arab on radar - soak the saddle
the fall - the unutterable
ghostface - supreme clientele
wu-tang - the w
electric wizard - dopethrone
the need - the need is dead

(e_3) (Edward III), Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

Must-have for me from the original list:

Acid Mothers Temple - La Novia
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Shellac - 1000 Hurts
Boris - Flood
OOIOO - Gold & Green
Acid Mothers Temple - Troubadours from Another Heavenly World
Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone...
Yo La Tengo - and Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
The Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are

I'd maybe add
The Cure - Bloodflowers (mostly because it was better than I expected it to be)
Arab Strap - Elephant Shoe
16 Horsepower - Secret South

shakiraghmac (onimo), Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

So far:

really really really love Flood, La Novia, & The Art of Self Defense a LOT!!!!

1000 Hurts, less so, though it has a couple of decent songs.

Haven't finished The Unseen yet.

More details in a bit.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

More updates:

The Unseen is grate!!!

R is okay, but not as good as the first QOTSA album.

Relationship of Command is also okay; good emo, but don't plan on doing any heavy-duty listening to it.

saw this & did a double take: "Ned Raggett likes the Clientele???"

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 05:09 (fourteen years ago)

yeah hoos I kind of thought another 00s poll was just over the horizon when I made these and wz trying to generate conversation in that vein but I also really just wanted to expand my musical tastes (though the whole cut-n-dried year-by-year angle may not have been the best way to do that)...

it's been slow going, partly bcz I've moved on to other projects, but I figured since I already wasted everyone's time at the outset with this, I might as well keep it going for the time being...

feel free to c&p any whiney snitfits about the autechre polls into here...
