The music press. I want the best. Gimme a selection of 3 mags that are trustworthy, enjoyable, get it right, etc.

Why 3? cos 4 is too many.

(has this been done?)

1. the wire. criticized (perhaps with some merit) for dryness but i find it informative about certain things

2. jockey slut. i don't really read it anymore, but its not bad and i'm stuggling already

3. smash hits. ok i don't read this either. look, i'll be honest with you, i don't really read music magazines, i don't dislike them by any means, but i just don't really get around to it. so my choices are, like, hypothetical and stuff...

You've just named the only three UK ones worth bothering with, I think, Gareth. Altho, I haven't seen Careless Talk yet...

What about Uncut and Mojo? Mojo isnt as stuck in the 60s as it was a few years ago. Covers new music and some obscure acts as well as the big acts. Face it.There will never be the perfect mag. Especially if you are fairly open minded about all music.

Craig, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The ones I buy:

- MOJO regularly. Good CDs on the front cover. Very limited in what it covers but when it covers something it does it well.

- Smash Hits / Top Of The Pops / CD:UK occasionally. SH is probably the best. The best article about Eminem ever ran in TOTP, though.

- Last month I bought Muzik for the first time in ages - reassuringly familiar.

Uncut, The Wire and Q I've given up on, even for bus journeys.

Grooves
but I can't seem to find it over here [uk].

nick.K, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the wire= can be good. The magazine has some problems but I think but it's OK.

terrorizer= good on metal and has done articles on some of my faves like current 93. Bonus points for prog issue which i didin't get hold of.

jazz review= don't have much time for mainstream jazz so I don't read that too often but can have some nice things (remember reading a nice article about hat art label).

Julio desouza, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

julio the Terrorizer prog edition is a double month edition, it will be on sale all/most of August - till the September edition.

Nick re: Grooves - I pick it up in Tower Records Camden - they only get a few copies though, try Tower Piccadilly Circus or maybe Borders - also I have seen it in the past on sale in a newsagent on Wardour Street, cut through one of the side streets on Berwick Street (i.e the newsagent is visible from Berwick Street).

It can also be bought via Chunky and Boomkat.

DJ Martian, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only mainstream music magazine worth getting is Hip Hop Connection. Self-depreciating, passionate about music, and, uniquely for a hip hop magazine, it isn't 80% adverts. Just avoid the Tim Westwood and Chuck D columns.

Oh, and CTCL is, like, the best thing since The Breakfast Club, so get that as well.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks martian: I MUST get it. i forgot they are ususally bi-monthly (or is it all the time now).

Julio Desouza, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No just in the Summer (July/ August is combined ) - then it's back to normal each Month, [there is also a combined Jan/Feb edition each year.]

DJ Martian, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Life Sucks Die is an infrequently appearing gem that focuses on hip-hop, has a good sesne of humor and a general amusing style careless talk is bloody great. it's funny. this is a big bonus for me

Andrew, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. Careless Talk has my vote, too.

Jerry, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just 1: Beikoku Ongaku

Mary, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but beikoku ongaku has one or two articles in english per issue, not very useful for us non-japanese speakers or readers.

keith, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm...they are translating a lot more these days, bc they want to make friends with music lovers all over the world (just like ILM?). Anyway even just looking at the pictures of the home artists and international jet-set is super.

Sound Projector - for oddness and art

Ptolomaic Terrascope - for psych
