unwound and converge are really good. you can skip the rest.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

really?

(btw I fully expect Danse Manatee to come out as the nyc g&f villain of this thread...)

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

well, aaliyah was cool. so maybe that too.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

i liked that super furry animals album when it came out. haven't listened since. the vinyl was cool!

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

everybody here will tell you to buy stars of the lid. they are like that.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

whatever you do, don't get that mogwai album. the worst. well, "get", everything is free in this day and age, right?

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

danse manatee was good

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

some good stuff in that list. no doubt isnt one of them though

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

The Opeth album is very good. So is the Tool album.

he does NOT have the training (HI DERE), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

love aaliyah and danse manatee, hate the glow pt 2.

mizzell, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

really?

(btw I fully expect Danse Manatee to come out as the nyc g&f villain of this thread...)

villain is the shins and the microphones imo.

both wolf eyes are good. if i were limiting it to two or three: fennesz, tired sounds, maybe bjork

what if "middlebrow" is pubes? (Matt P), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

Endless Summer!

everybody here will tell you to buy stars of the lid. they are like that.
That's because it makes sense to. Tired Sounds is good, though I must say I prefer On the Refinement of their decline.

There's Money To Be Made in Ice Cream (EDB), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

basically the only thing you should do with that Shins album is nutpunch it; it will change your life to the extent of, after hearing it, part of you will spend the rest of your life going "why the fuck did I listen to that"

he does NOT have the training (HI DERE), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

I saw The Shins once on Austin City Limits; just caught the last part of the show...it was a little underwhelming. But I liked the "New Slang" song.

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

some of my faves were:

a sun that never sets
bath
leaving your body map
the dreadful hours
from wisdom to hate
last fair deal gone down
hymns
tara
a fine day to exit
how i long to feel that summer in my heart
virus west
khanate
the codex necro
point
pure rock fury
10,000 light years
old ramon
fire walk with us
sub-basement

all those are worth owning.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

I really want to hear the rest of that No Doubt album too...I like a lot of the singles that came off of that (and am a pretty big fan of No Doubt's 'nu-new-wave' period/schtick...)

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

interesting, Scott...thanks a lot for all of your suggs on both threads...!

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

anybody want to rep for Paik? I've been wanting to get into them for a long while seeing that they are supposedly a shoegazer/drone/doom band from Michigan...

destroy a. monsters (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

I love Paik

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Scott is on the crack! Fugazi - The Argument is in my top ten for the decade. Bjork, Opeth, Fennesz, Tool, Microphones are all great too. No Doubt's Rock Steady is a damn good pop album. Unwound - Leaves Turn gets a lot of admiration, but hard to love and go back to repeatedly. I loved the SFA at the time, but haven't been in the mood for it in a few years.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

Aaliyah
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist - Danse Manatee
Wolf Eyes - Dread
Tool - Lateraelus
Converge - Jane Doe
The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid
Fennesz - Endless Summer
Fugazi - The Argument

all worth getting.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

rest is garbage to greater or lesser degrees.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna rep for the unwound album which is my favorite from that year and probably in my top 5 for the decade

ciderpress, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

special herbs series is actually quite boring imo and although the beats are mostly dope, it really does need doom on top of them. (rare an instrumental hiphop album is anything other than this tbrr)

one man meme-denier - jol in? (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

this list is much better top to bottom than your 2000 list

ciderpress, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Vespertine and Endless Summer are excellent. I used to really like that Circulatory System album, but I haven't played it in a while (if you like Olivia Tremor Control though, you should get it--it's tighter than whatever their last album is called). DOOM is kinda underrated as a producer, but I'm not sure I'd bother with those Special Herbs albums, a lot of those beats show up on other stuff with his rapping.

elephant rob, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

the No Doubt is solid but not super memorable beyond the singles. Aaliyah's a classic of course. and as much as i like later Fugazi, for some reason The Argument hasn't really clicked with me, although people seem to love it.

some albums from that year I would recommend:
Ted Leo/Pharmacists - The Tyranny of Distance
Chris Lee - Chris Lee Plays & Sings Torch'd Songs, Charivari Hymns & Oriki Blue-Marches
Firewater - Psychopharmacology
Usher - 8701
Destroy All Nels Cline - Destroy All Nels Cline

this. right here. is my. new LMBO (some dude), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Slicer is by far and away the best (non-cdr) wolf eyes alb imho

In C is fun!

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

Ones I definitely still own:

Acid Mothers Temple - In C (Terry Riley cover -- probably on par with the Styrenes and Bang On A Can versions -- making it stand out from from all their other albums I've never been able to tell apart)*
Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
Opeth - Blackwater Park

One I probably still own, but it'd be in the storage closet, so I can make sure right now:

Oneida - Anthem of the Moon

*-- see this thread:

Do I own too many Acid Mothers Temple albums?

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Would not necessarily recommend per se' that you buy any of those, though (unless they were $3 or less, for a used CD. I could easily live without them. Opeth one should be on the top of your list, probably.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

xp -- so I can't make sure right now.

(Will refrain from listing the many good albums your list is missing.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

Unlike Chuck, I can't refrain. D.a.M., Were Strokes and White Stripes not listed cuz you already own them, or you don't like them? Cuz while they were obvious and ubiquitous, they're certainly worth hearing if you haven't. More:

Hawksley Workman - (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves [An acquired taste understandably, but a long time favorite]
Mercury Rev - All Is Dream
Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life
Ed Harcourt - Here Be Monsters
The Dismemberment Plan - Change

Also Gorillaz, Daft Punk, Boredoms, Cannibal Ox, Spoon, Pulp, Mark Lanegan, Life Without Buildings, Sigh, Czars, Steve Wynn, Elbow, Basement Jaxx, Missy Elliott, O'Rourke, Andrew Bird, Eels, Four Tet, Otto, Bows, Beta Band, Lift To Experience, !!!, N*E*R*D, Roots Manuva, Spirit Caravan, Bardo Pond, Hammers of Misfortune, Max DeCastro, Moreno Veloso, Blue States. It was a good year.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

The Argument is way good.

billstevejim, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

Jeff W, Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

you've got to add Lightning Bolt's Ride the Skies to that list. It's the album that made me love noise. Wolf Eyes ain't got shit on the bolt.

Fellini.Kuti, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

Vespertine is by far the best thing on that list. Aaliyah and Fennesz are also worth checking out.

Never understood the love for that SFA album, i always found it was production over actual songs. Run Christian Run is an amazing song though.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't heard most of those, but I like Love & Theft, the SFA album, Inverted World, and The Argument, in that order. I spent most of the decade something of a Love & Theft skeptic, but I've been falling in love with it just this past month.

More recommendations not yet mentioned:

the Coup - Party Music
Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet
New Order - Get Ready
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Alicia Keys - Songs in a Minor
Soundtrack of Our Lives - Behind the Music
Gillian Welch - Time (the Revelator)
Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea
Ghostface Killah - Bulletproof Wallets
Leonard Cohen - Ten New Songs

MumblestheRevelator, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

rock action is actually great fuck the haters

call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

The best album that wasn't made by Daft Punk this year was The Tyranny of Distance by Ted Leo & the Pharmacists. I would add that to the list, it's an absolute classic.

Other great albums from 2001.

The Strokes-Is this it
New Order-Get Ready
Jim O'Rourke-Insignificance
Jay-Z-The Blueprint
Cannibal Ox-The Cold Vein
The Beta Band-Hot Shots II
Pulp-We Love Life
Basement Jaxx-Rooty
Missy Elliott-Miss E..So Addictive
Spoon-Girls Can Tell
Stereolab-Sound Dust
Rufus Wainwright-Poses
Maxwell-Now
The Human League-Secrets
Spiritualized-Let it Come down

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

Zeno, Thursday, 22 July 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 22 July 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

Bjork - Vespertine <- love this so much

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You <- this is beautiful too, don't miss it if you like this band

Isobella - A 24 Syllable Haiku <- have never even heard of this, but it sounds intriguing - what is it?

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Thursday, 22 July 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

Unwound, Converge, Opeth, Oneida. Those are all fantastic.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 22 July 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

Vespertine and The Argument are both really good, though I can't remember the last time I played the Bjork album tbh. I think it's a very 'in the right mood' album.

Born too beguiled (DavidM), Thursday, 22 July 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

I loved the Paik at the time but can't say I've dug it out for years. My pick of the list would probably be that, the Unwound, and the Fennesz, though.

Tired Sounds of... is pleasant but not my favourite SoTL by some way (that would be The Ballasted Orchestra which by the way I am still mad at everyone for not voting for in the alt 90s poll) so I don't know whether to "pick" it or not.

I have heard The White Stripes and Strokes albums: I thought the Strokes were decent, but thought both were very overrated...De Stijl is my White Stripes pick...

Isobella is a shoegazer band, on the same record label as Paik I think...

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Sunday, 25 July 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, yeah. US Maple put out Acre Thrills this year, which is tied with "Talker" for their best album, meaning it's the best album of 2001. Does not sound like anything else mentioned on this thread, and just ridiculously great.

dlp9001, Sunday, 25 July 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

AVOID/LOL INDIE:

Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World

Don't listen to this fucktard. Get RATW I absolutely goddamn IMPLORE you. It's one of the best records I've ever heard, in all sorts of ways.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Sunday, 25 July 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, Hefner "Dead Media" which is the album that freaked out all of their long-term fans, but is secretly their best.

dlp9001, Monday, 26 July 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks to this thread for reminding me to listen to the Aaliyah album finally. I picked it up after my run. Am on "Read Between the Lines." So far it's really nice. Maybe I was afraid it was gonna be like her last role in Queen of the Damned, not so good.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 26 July 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

Death in June - All Pigs Must Die

@( * O * )@ (CaptainLorax), Monday, 26 July 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

man that album scared the shit out of me

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Monday, 26 July 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

Half of it is soothing lullabies about death and pigs inbreeding. I love that album

@( * O * )@ (CaptainLorax), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

No Doubt - Rock Steady
Acid Mothers Temple - In C (one of very few AMT records i actually like)
Keiji Haino - Abandon All Words (dunno this one, but am a fan, so yeah)
Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist - Danse Manatee
Wolf Eyes - Slicer
Wolf Eyes - Dread (best wolf eyes by far)
MF DOOM - Special Herbs Vol. 1 & 2
Fennesz - Endless Summer (total classic)
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World (dunno this record, but love the title track)

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Acid Mothers Temple have thoroughly pissed me off and pretty much guaranteed my absolute reluctance to listen to them by releasing seemingly every goddamn little brainfart of an idea they get - can't you guys just release, like, a record every year or something? See also, Robert Pollard

Dread the best Wolf Eyes, huh? I've only heard Burned Mind and Human Animal to be fair.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

hey, how'd the shins get in that above list? for the record: fuck the shins.

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, dread's my favorite. burned mind is good too, similar but the ideas are more condensed. slicer's great too, but relatively minimal. and yeah, AMT are great when they're on, but quality control is ridiculously low.

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

also garage stuff, some of it very obvious:

strokes - is this it
white stripes - white blood cells
dirtbombs - ultraglide in black
the deadly snakes - i'm not your soldier anymore
lost sounds - black wave
lost sounds - memphis is dead
reigning sound - break up break down
the gossip - that's not what i heard
the kent 3 - spells
king khan & his shrines - three hairs and you're mine

non-garage that i remember liking (some of which i haven't heard in forever):

boredoms - rebore 0
ludacris - word of mouf
miss e...so addictive - missy elliott
to rococo rot - music is a hungry ghost
outkast - big boi & dre present... (good intro/overview)
jay-z - the blueprint
badawi - soldier of midian
aiko shimada - blue marble
daft punk - discovery
andrew w.k. - i get wet
the coup - party music
low - things we lost in the fire (my favorite low by far)
N*E*R*D - in search of
cannibal ox - the cold vein
gorillaz - gorillaz
aaliyah - s/t

never heard the kurupt album - space boogie? any good? really liked the dj quick collab...
