not sure about the blurry vocals.other than that - good as usual.
― Zeno, Friday, 23 July 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, it's definitely different, especially from the stuff that was on her last record, but I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole LP
― markers, Friday, 23 July 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)
I really enjoy her non-music video endeavors. I find her incredibly funny. But her music makes me run for my life.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 July 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)
so use it for jogging
― Zeno, Friday, 23 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)
i like it, not surprisingly. i don't think it's all that much of a departure, but i'm okay with her not departing. i noticed though that her press release more explicitly invokes prog than before. which is what she's always seemed like to me.

why did we need a new thread for this?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 July 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
seriously guys, why did we need a new thread for a new record?
― markers, Friday, 23 July 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)
I guess 162 posts on the other thread justifies a separate one this time...although if people started new threads for every new record this site would become a bit unwieldy.
here's the other thread -- marnie stern is fun
― curmudgeon, Friday, 23 July 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)
this site would become a bit unwieldy.
Would?! This site already seems as unruly as a Marnie Stern record.
― bmichael, Friday, 23 July 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)
does anyone know what happened with the Mary Timony collaboration?
also, this is predictably great and I am super excited about the new album.
― fffv, Friday, 23 July 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)
The label teased another new track from the album today, "Transparency is the New Mystery," one of the (relatively) slower ones that nonetheless gives a sense of the album's mood. It's her most earnest and wistful album, and I really can't get enough of it. Each song is a like a punch in the gut, but it's still really brisk and fun. This is easily one of my favorite albums of the year.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)
for ash is great, might be the best i've heard from her. very psyched for this!

Perpetua linked to a new interview w/ Marnie Stern
― markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
thanks for the heads up, Evan -- I've already listened to the track eleven times in the past hour or so according to iTunes
― markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
I love how adamant she is that music has to mean something; that she's almost personally offended by songwriters who don't somehow reveal themselves or put themselves out there.
I also love how on the new record she goes out of her way to make sure every song has stakes. Early on the album, on "Nothing Left," she even explicitly spells them out in the chorus: "This! Does! Matter!" It is awesome.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
the new track is awesome. a really step forward.
i hope most of the album will sound like this.

i dig the song just fine, but does anyone else get annoyed by zach hill? dude overplays the drums like crazy! it's like... i admire your proficiency and all, but it comes across as just showy and i always hate how tightly his drums seem to be tuned.
― akaky akakievich, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)
couldn't agree with you less
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
she killed it was her previous record -- if this is on that level ohhhhhhhh mannnnnnn it could turn out to be the best thing i've heard all year!
― markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
i love this record so much. it's full of joy and pain and beauty all of which is revealed through absolute musical dominnnce. so, so good.
― maura, Thursday, 9 September 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

― markers, Friday, 10 September 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)
trebly, energetic, high pitched female vocals, sugary, high bpm (I only heard that one song 'rulers' I think it was called)
― dayo, Friday, 10 September 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)
i really like marnie stern, but she is the queen of one-note melodies

My record showed up in the mail yesterday and it came w/a cool poster of the album cover. Also it is an awesome album so I am highly satisfied w/this purchase. I wish there were more bands I liked on KRS because the vinyl/download ticket combo is affordable + awesome!

I went to go buy this yesterday and the guy behind the counter told me they had sold their last (only?) copy, but that they'd be getting at least one more in when the truck stopped by next at the end of the day or whatever. Dude also said some of the other stores in the area had it. I'm going to head out in a bit and see if I can find one.
― markers, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

the interview linked upthread makes her sound like she talks like she plays.
i never checked for her before but i'm hearing the new one now and it sounds awesome. 'cinco de mayo' especially. i think 'prog' was not a very useful thing to tag her with, but maybe it made more sense on the older ones.

The show was v v awesome and loud and joyful and fun! Lots of smiling and good motion and shredding. After four songs or so she said, "Normally I say a bunch of really dirty stuff between songs, but Courtney's grandparents are in the audience tonight." (I looked it up and this Courtney is their tour manager.) The bassist kept trying to get her to play along with little jokes about labia or whatever and she'd just take a sip of whiskey and say, "Usually I'm not this slow!" <3

2013: the year I finally make a point of listening to Stern's music.
Chronicles, I'm still trying to figure it out and whether I like it. The excesses echo what I once loved about Deerhoof, so there's that.

She still sits in with Seth Meyers' band sometimes, right? It's always cool flipping through channels and hearing her wail away on national television. But it'd be happier if she toured
― Evan R, Monday, 13 June 2016 18:31 (nine years ago)
It appears she is still in his house band, which must be a pretty solid and steady gig but I do wish she'd record another album.
