FUCK YOU I'M BLACK (HI DERE), Friday, 23 July 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I've never heard Boi-ngo. Probably voting Good For Your Soul, although the Skeletons In The Closet comp probably hits most of the high points of these for me.

If you're interested, here are The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo on The Gong Show. (I actually remember when this originally aired!)

For whatever reason KROQ would play these guys ad nauseam when I was growing up, even in the teeth of punk revival. I also had no idea Boingo Alive was re-recorded and had a minor freakout after hearing the original version of "Dead Man's Party", realizing that everything I knew about most Boingo tracks was wrong, or at least incomplete.

Haha, Boi-ngo was the first album I ever got of theirs (was $3 in a cutout bin), and I tried pretty damn hard to convince myself I was into it, but...no.

Warum habt Ihr mich totgefüttert? (Abbott), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

haha so many ppl i've known from l.a. had this crazy hatred for oingo boingo that always seemed so random to me like if you had crazy hatred for the escape club or right said fred or something and then we started listening to the kroq 80s station at work alot and MAN does the oingo boingo hatred make sense to me now.

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

BOINGO is, I think, actually their worst album. I just think of these guys as a singles band, really.

Warum habt Ihr mich totgefüttert? (Abbott), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

I heard them on the radio from ~1994-1997, starting when I became interested in pop music and ending when the family moved. Maybe it if were 1984-2007 things would be different...

skip, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

i think prob the only reason there arent more people showing up to decry dark at the blah blah is because like NO ONE bought that fucking thing. afaik it isnt even available on CD

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

First 3 + Boingo (1994) > Dead Man's Party >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Boi-ngo & Dark at the End of the Tunnel.

(The 1980 ep would rank up there with the first grouping had it been included).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

This is one of the worst bands ever imho.

BOI-NGO has "Not My Slave," right? That was a pretty good song.

the penis cream pilot walked free (Phil D.), Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

Someone explain to me why they are so intensely despised, once and for all. The first album appears to be something of a classic apart from that Kinks cover.

PaulTMA, Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

Love albums 2-4 )voted for album #2), the first one is patchy and the rest are GODAWFUL. Is there critical non-LP stuff on that anthology?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 29 July 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

I own (but have never listened to) Only A Lad. Is that enough reason to vote for it?

Officer Pupp, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

Good For Your Soul is the answer btw

Mayor Hickenlooper and the liberal agenda (HI DERE), Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

If you mean "Skeletons From The Closet," it's a pretty basic one-disc overview of their A&M years. I'm sure there are newer, bigger comps, but this is all I've ever needed on CD. I have "Good For Your Soul" on ancient cassete, and "Dead Man's Party" on vinyl; never play either anymore.

1. "Little Girls" 3:45
2. "Private Life" 3:19
3. "On the Outside" 3:53
4. "Nasty Habits" 4:08
5. "Grey Matter" 5:51
6. "Only a Lad" 4:00
7. "Wake Up! (It's 1984)" 4:44
8. "Insects" 3:04
9. "Whole Day Off" 3:58
10. "Nothing to Fear (But Fear Itself)" 3:55
11. "Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me" 3:45
12. "Who Do You Want to Be" 3:33

All 10 songs permeate the organs (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

I looked at all their comps (4 of them!) and found that, no, there's very little stuff on them I don't have from before "Boi-ngo" - 4 tracks from "Only A Lad" seem to be the concensus (Little Girls / On The Outside / Nasty Habits / Only A Lad), a pair of tracks from the debut EP (Violent Love / Ain't This The Life), a soundtrack contribution (Goodbye-Goodbye from "Fast Times At Ridgemont High") and an alternate version of "Weird Science".

I may be a distinct minority but I dug Elfman's solo album ("So-Lo") and the "Boingo Alive" re-recordings.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

no dude, i think so-lo is completely awesome, you are otm right there

System, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Yay to the 10 other people who give a crap!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

I never got the hate for Boingo (1994) - thought it was a perfectly fine album with a great pop sensibility matched with cinematic feel...maybe a bit too pretentious for a pop album but far from lousy. But I always had a high tolerance for that kind of thing.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 30 July 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

The first four are pretty even in quality IMO so not unhappy with the poll results. I voted for Only a Lad.
