How Crystal Castles didn't get shortlisted (and how Islands didn't even get LONGLISTED) is beyond me, but there should be a thread to talk about this.

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 26 July 2010 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

The two best albums here are by previous winners: Caribou and Pallett.

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 26 July 2010 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

Islands didn't get long-listed because...well...industry buzz around them more or less evaporated after Return to the Sea, no? I maintain that Arm's Way was a funny and sarcastic and awesome record, but it was really poorly received, and I honestly think that a lot of people didn't even bother to check out Vapours as a result. If it was going to get Polaris love, it would have required either breakout popular success or an actively enthusiastic critical response.

This isn't to say that Vapours isn't a good record - it is, in a lot of ways, but I don't think I would have short-listed it at any rate. Crystal Castles is unexplainable. Unless they didn't qualify? What's the "year" for the 2010 Polaris?

Y /\/\ /\/\ \/ (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 26 July 2010 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

Honestly, I'm more shocked that BSS still have this much critical goodwill in Canada. They are/were my favourite band for the past decade and even I find the new LP to be a grower at best.

Crystal Castles made the longlist, so it's not as if they weren't eligible.

And as for Vapours, that shit definitely deserved to be LONGLISTED, at the very least.

^^^

I'd pick Caribou. Haven't spent much time with Owen's album, but I'm sure it ages nicely.

I'm gonna have to go with Caribou too, with Besnard a close second and BSS a distant third.

I've only heard 3 of these (Besnard, BSS, and Owen P)... of those I really hope its not BSS.

System, Friday, 17 September 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

All these band names and album titles are very Canadian sounding.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 18 September 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

These are all pretty bad so...Caribou.
The winner will either be BSS or Besnard Lakes. Probably the Lakes.

The Shad album is pretty good.

That would be great, but something tells me it won't happen.

The award is, uhm, awarded in a few hours.

I'm disappointed in this thread's lack of posts.

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

i gave my ex's best friend 45 bucks for one of the Caribou posters that was designed specifically for the awards. this was 4 days before i split up with her and i'm a little concerned i'm never going to see this thing now :(

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 20 September 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love one of those Caribou posters. Awesome.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 September 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

Me too. Most are pretty slick.

altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

Karkwa – 'Les Chemins De Verre' won. Whatever.

altered boners (rennavate), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone heard it? What are they like?

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

Gorecki or Go Home (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

The production sounds very Dave Fridmann-esque

Gorecki or Go Home (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

So they've basically given it to Arcade Fire.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty much. But I like how the vocals are mixed here more than I do on the latest real Arcade Fire.
