peter buck had this great thing about how a bunch of the early r.e.m. songs started on a because it's the only chord he really liked.

ALL you have to DO is raise the 3rd and 5th by a semitone and add the 7th and 9th and 11th and stand on your head and allow a moonbeam to fall across the keyboard while reciting the alphabet backwards it's not HARD come ON people!!!

Is everyone here who names a specific chord also thinking of a specific instrument or temperament, or are you actually most attracted to that chord at a particular frequency?
I mean, I could say that maj7 chords are my favorites in general. But I could only answer "Cmaj7" or "Dmaj7" if I were thinking of, say, open chords played on a guitar in standard tuning.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Monday, 26 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)
Oh wait, it can't be "a particular frequency" unless you're naming an octave, too
It seems like most people are describing particular guitar chords, mostly in open position, which irks me slightly. There are a whole bunch of other Am chords on a guitar you guys.
― uNi-tArDs (Hurting 2), Monday, 26 July 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)
Guys, you can play F#dim on the guitar with three finger, if you barre the ones marked as 1 and 2 here:
http://www.play-acoustic-guitar.com/images/Cdim-Ultimate-Guitar-Chords.png
Happily, the same chord acts as Ebdim, Adim and C dim. And if you slide it fret by fret, you can hit the diminished chord for every key.
That's why I love it: One chord shape, within the space of three frets, acts as the diatonic VII for all 12 major keys.

I just found a cool jazzy "math pop" band that hits a lot of major seventh chordsThe Ancient GreeksThe singer is kind of annoying but the instrumentation is excellent"Approximately one hour's worth of the greatest, lushly-orchestrated, frenetic "math-pop" you'll ever lay ears upon. Recommended if you like The Sea & Cake, The Replacements, Tahiti 80, Owls, and Tortoise."

I don't really have a preference for specific keys, they're all equal in my ears. But major chords w/both 6ths and flat 7ths always get me. And if you had a # 4th, well then I have to find you and marry you.
