I feel kind of bogus making these threads bcz I have no discernible plans in the near future of obtaining these albums...being unemployed leaves little dispensable income after bills, and even when I do get on the Internet, I haven't really had much luck in d/ling (not that I'm really planning on doing so anyways)...but I had already most of these lists made out of sheer tedium...I just want to thank you guys again! Bjork - Medulla

really disliked this when it came out, which was heartbreaking as I was a huge Bjork stan then. But I put it on the other day and liked a lot more of it than I remembered ("Who Is It" is fantastic). OTOH, don't get it until you've got Vespertine.

And so I'm not just being negative, I rec checking out: Dungen, Espers, and you might as well have an opinion on Joanna Newsom--MEM is my favorite of hers, though that's distinctly a minority opinion.

elephant rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

Comets on Fire - Blue Cathedral
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat (Outside of the EPs this is the only thing of theirs I like)
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
RTX - Transmaniacon <<<<HIGHLY UNDERRATED
Dungen - Ta det Lungt
Deerhoof - Milk Man

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

ripped Medulla the other day, don't think I've listened to it since it came out... been meaning to revisit Bjork's catalog

These threads really make me realize how little I cared about music for a lot of this decade.

medulla is awes, c'mon yall.

also leviathan and blue cathedral.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

you should prob at least listen to blueberry boat because no amount of outside opinion will help with that one.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

xp
I need to listen to it again, but "liked it more" could definitely turn into "love it".

AWESOME (& arguably each of their best work):

Mastodon - Leviathan
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly
Junior Boys - Last Exit

SOLID to GREAT, depending on yr mood:

Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
The Mountain Goats - We Shall All Be Healed
Comets on Fire - Blue Cathedral
of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic
Brian Wilson - SmIlE
Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker
Mission of Burma - ONOffON
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter
Black Dice - Creature Comforts
Stereolab - Margerine Eclipse
Bjork - Medulla
Dungen - Ta det Lungt
Deerhoof - Milk Man
Fennesz - Venice

OVERRATED/AVOID/LOL INDIE:

Franz Ferdinand
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
The Killers - Hot Fuss
The Delgados - Universal Audio
Modest Mouse - Good New for Those Who Love Bad News
Joanna Newsome - The Milk-Eyed Mender

WILL CONTINUE TO ACTIVELY AVOID:

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - The Doldrums
Tegan and Sara - So Jealous
Phoenix - Alphabetical

SPECIAL WTF AWARD (on the plus side, it's his "best" album; unfortunately, it's still a Sufjan Stevens album):

Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans

You know, I like a reasonable number of albums on this list, but can't help thinking that you'd get a better return on your time if you spent it learning to knit or something. Get Blueberry Boat just so you won't have to pay attention to people who think it's a masterpiece.

I have heard & very much like the following:

Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
Comets on Fire - Blue Cathedral
of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
Brian Wilson - SmIlE
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Dungen - Ta det Lungt

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

Franz Ferdinand - Good, relatively unpretentious, overrated in some corners at the time, probably rated about right currently. The German beer hall bouncey-bounce forced hysteria of their songs might drive you up the wall over time.

Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse Excellent. Almost as good as Murray Street. If you usually like SY's particular brand of voodoo, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't like this album, where they do that voodoo shockingly well for a band in its third decade.

Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat The stuff on it that I like ("Straight Street," "Mason City"), I happen to love, but it's maddeningly inconsistent, and their mannerisms get wearying. How you feel about Eleanor's voice (I swoon) will dictate your tolerance level for the songs that just don't work at all.

Brian Wilson - SmIlE A crushing disappointment that I'm madly in love with. Brian's voice is so shot that auto tune can do nothing for him, the orchestration and production lacks much distinction, but the ideas are so touchingly weird and generous, and the Saturday morning cavalcade of aural superstrange gets me every time. If Wilson's work has ever meant anything at all to you you'll have to think "what a damn shame, let me play it over and over and over again."

Animal Collective - Sung Tongs The only time I've had any use for these guys. Gets boring after a while, but it's kind of fun to wait for their next funny-dumb-neat sonic idea as the album unfolds.

The Killers - Hot Fuss Journey for the hung up generation. I listen to it all the time, which doesn't mean that I know how to defend it, because I don't.

Modest Mouse - Good New for Those Who Love Bad News Not an album I can be rational about. I love it. It might be my favorite album of the decade. It's got an anti-Bukowski song for people who think they might should get into Bukowski. It's got a broken down anthem moment that actually crossed over big. It's got a great album closer that's the best song they will ever record. Recommended.

Also worth hearing from 2004:

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
Magnetic Fields - i
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Scissor Sisters - s/t
Le Tigre - This Island
Tom Waits - Real Gone
Morrissey - You are the Quarry
Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her

MumblestheRevelator, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

I was listening to some Medúlla remixes today & it was v satisfying. I think that album & Vespertine are the best stuff she's ever done.

At college I had the awesomest Medulla poster hanging behind my bed. Ahhhhhh college

@( * O * )@ (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

all i care about is that sufjan album. i love him, and it's probably my favourite of his. i feel like all anyone who has ever heard this guy has heard is his chamber pop, post-michigan stuff. which is awesome and all, i love those three albums, but i really, really love when he plays banjo and sings.

seven swans is a super-beautiful album, that's all i have to say. i like some other ones on that list but this one is the beeeeest.

marc iv, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

the hype surrounding Illinois circa 2005 was unreal

markers, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

from this list i think the one my collection is missing most is that RTX.

proud teabagger from rim country (arby's), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

my need to hear Seven Swans comes from my deep love for the song "Sister" which for all I know might completely justify SS's career...imagine my pleasant surprise when it turned out that song wz on the same album as his Flannery O'Connor homage...!
