...was IIRC the section title in the Lester Bangs comp on the ongoing critical relationship between Bangs and Lou Reed (and Lou Reed records).

I think this is one of the best things about Lester B, his obsessive returning as a critic to one (for him) key artists. I wish he'd lived longer and continued it.

What I want to know is - are there any other examples of this critic-artist relationship? Not in the drug-buddies/worst-enemies love-hate Lester-Lou sense, but in terms of a writer keeping coming back to one artist - maybe even the same songs and records - and writing about them throughout their life?

Didn't Springsteen have one particularly prominent champion in the press who'd supported him from the get-go?

Hmm support isn't exactly what I meant, though it's part of it - more a writer documenting over the long term what particular music means and comes to mean in his life.

(i guess alex in nyc is thinking of jon landau, who as a rockwriter called springsteen "the future of rock and roll!!" and later became his manager)

Greil Marcus with Elvis Presley, Greil Marcus with Bob Dylan, Greil Marcus with female post-punk bands, Greil Marcus with Sleater-Kinney.

Hmm there's a pattern here.

prince has had a love hate relationship in written form and in real life with many columnists. cj "billy jack bitch" , etc

chaki, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

prince has had wars with various columnists in print for years (billy jack bitch CJ being one)

I wonder when Jerry last interviewed Courtney? That'd be interesting.

Just kidding.

CJ is nobody's idea of a critic; she's hardly my idea of a columnist

M Matos, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(and I don't mean that in the "yeah she dissed our guy screw her!" kind of way too many slobbering Prince fans do, I mean she's a lousy writer)

M Matos, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I think I gave you exactly the sort of answer you weren't looking for, Tom, sorry.

Anyway, I'm always interested in what Momus has to say about Bowie.

Arthur, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what, lousy writers can't be critics too?

Josh, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not sure how long their love/hate relationship lasted, but in the early eighties, the cred-war between robert christgau and sonic youth was fairly heavy. esp. kill yr idols, or as it was alternately titled on one ep, "i killed christgau with my big fucking di

1. Landau gets big thanks on every subsequent Boss LP

2. Reynolds + ...?? I'd like to say Morrissey, but I guess not: in fact SR is maybe the opposite of what you're describing, Tom?

3. Christopher Ricks + Dylan!

4. The Pinefox + Lloyd Cole. No, hang on, I've only written one article on him.

5. The Pinefox + The Pinefox.

6. Actually this is commoner in literature: Hugh Kenner + EP / JJ, Fish + Milton, etc.

7. Morley + ?? Joy Division? Morrissey? Himself??
