just to be clear about the thread topic (and I'm not saying that the examples in this thread don't fit), this is for songs where the later version rips off one/most/some of the best parts of the original track and does not manage to improve on the original in any way.

Obviously this is objective, but there are cases where it's pretty damn hard to argue.

I remember being appalled when I first heard all of Spaceman. Practically everyone I know had been really excited to hear the whole tune for weeks.

I adore the fatboy slim video but music-wise I prefer the original by miles.

I had pretty much the same reaction. After the intro the "real" tune starts, and... it's some boring guitar rock?! Fuck that shit!

I'll be honest, I almost always prefer the sampled version, but mostly because I value repetition above most other qualities in music.

hippychick is a bad one for this thread bcuz it uses the sample to such a diff effect, its not redundant or something

I gotta say I disagree about "Millennium". "You Only Live Twice" is classic obviously, but I think "Millennium" puts the sample to good use, especially considering how underused those lovely strings are in the original, even though they're best thing in it.

I read this as a sign that John Barrys' composition (that i also found much more 'deeper' than Millenium) is indestructable - no matter how you use it.

meisenfek, Friday, 6 August 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

(especially the instrumental version - blocked anyway by youtube)

meisenfek, Friday, 6 August 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

It's a nice composition, but the melody sounds much prettier done with the strings than with the electric guitar, so it's a shame that the strings are only heard once in the beginning, and once in the end (and on the second time they're buried by that bloody guitar). That's why I think "Millennium" corrects this mistake by letting you hear those lovely strings several times. I agree with Filthy Dylan that repetition is often what makes the sampling tune better - some sounds are so great they deserve to be emphasized, not sandwiched between more boring sounds.
