does anyone else like these guys ?

how big a part does irony play in what they do ?

mike (ro)bott, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I do. No more than any other "modern rock", really. And they're funny about it.

Andrew, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think irony in their music is a bit of a cop-out. They have some goofy synth tunes, but then so does Rush. I think they play great proggy metal that sounds very little like Dream Theater, and that's the greatest thing that could ever happen to prog metal IMO!

c average did it first and did it better

one year passes...
matador is releasing a "greatest hits" (?) sampler in the UK/European market... no tracklist yet.

What an ironic title!

11-03-2003 The Fucking Champs - Greatest Fucking Hits CD ole-584

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the irony lies more with their fans justification for liking them than it does with the band who are big metal fans and don't hide it. V is a good record.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

i like III the best, very goofy mammoth blend of prog, classic rock and speed-metal, and then the strange electro/techno interludes... unlike any other record i had ever heard.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Very true, but I think they are more self-aware and have more of a sense of humor about it than, say, Symphony X or something.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

their sense of humor (similarly, their "audience") seems to be a critical issue for their critics to frown upon. it seems to tell you (warning big suprise ahead) more about the critics' issues than anything else. i blame mark s.

did anyone ever hear the greatest hits album?

If you like the Fucking Champs, then check out the Swarming Hordes (actually, i think they practically make the Fucking Champs obsolete, but I don't want to rain on this thread's parade, although Julianne Shepherd's review here in the Portland Mercury sums it up perfectly. And I have seen them live twice, and they are indeed the real deal.)

The Champs are great. How can you seriously dig on metal WITHOUT a sense of humor?

scottontharox (scottkundla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago) link

How can you seriously dig on [insert any genre of music here] WITHOUT a sense of humor?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

"How can you seriously dig on etc.?"

It ain't easy! Only the most absolutely supersonic of bands can overcome the no-sense-of-humour-whatsoever hurdle. In other words, the sounds they make are so gargantuan that laughter is not an option. (You don't laugh at the Great Pyramid or the Easter Island megaliths.) And the number of bands that can do this is very small. In fact, there's only one: The Tea Party, who are (to borrow an Archie Bunkerism) as funny as a crotch. Compared to them, Yes/Killing Joke/Styx are The Coasters!

What are they like live? I have to decide whether to see them tomorrow night. They go on at like 1:00 and I'm afraid that by then I'll be in a state to be bored with "just" instrumental metal...

five years pass...

my friend andy used to pick me up for band practice, and he'd be blasting this song with his tinny mazda pickup truck stock speakers as i threw my marshall cab in the back, and we'd cruise out to the rehearsal space where we drank beer and wrote songs that felt like this and the beer. we listened to powerslave and shit too but this was just better, period. sounded better, at least. this album and V were on constant ro in those days, cept we skipped the shitty tracks (of which half the albums were, seems like). man those were the days. our band was killer too. then the band broke up and i moved away and he moved away and we got all old and shit. but this still rules. the fucking am wasn't bad either.

this band is indeed killer and I would like to see them fight to the death against ratatat (obv ratatat would stand no chance)

⚖ on my truck (dyao), Saturday, 12 June 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago) link

really, you're gonna pit them against ratatat? seems like an unfair pairing to me, but i've only heard about a minute of ratatat, so

i've been to jail twice in my life - the second time i happened to be wearing a fucking champs tee shirt, and i felt like the holding cell felt i was frontin, which i was, since it's hard to be a champ and be in jail at the same time, let alone a fucking champ

del griffith, Saturday, 12 June 2010 04:08 (fourteen years ago) link

ha I dunno they've just always seemed kinda similar to me (instrumentals centered around crunchy riffs) for some reason I've never heard a fucking champs album in full, think it's time to rectify that now

think my roommate had a fucking champs tshirt too

a formative guitar clinic in SF, late 90s... The Fucking C4AM95, Polvo, with TFUL282 headlining.

Probably the most different tunings on one given stage in one night since Glen Branca and Rat At Rat R and Mars ~downtown 81.
