It ain't easy! Only the most absolutely supersonic of bands can overcome the no-sense-of-humour-whatsoever hurdle. In other words, the sounds they make are so gargantuan that laughter is not an option. (You don't laugh at the Great Pyramid or the Easter Island megaliths.) And the number of bands that can do this is very small. In fact, there's only one: The Tea Party, who are (to borrow an Archie Bunkerism) as funny as a crotch. Compared to them, Yes/Killing Joke/Styx are The Coasters!

my friend andy used to pick me up for band practice, and he'd be blasting this song with his tinny mazda pickup truck stock speakers as i threw my marshall cab in the back, and we'd cruise out to the rehearsal space where we drank beer and wrote songs that felt like this and the beer. we listened to powerslave and shit too but this was just better, period. sounded better, at least. this album and V were on constant ro in those days, cept we skipped the shitty tracks (of which half the albums were, seems like). man those were the days. our band was killer too. then the band broke up and i moved away and he moved away and we got all old and shit. but this still rules. the fucking am wasn't bad either.

this band is indeed killer and I would like to see them fight to the death against ratatat (obv ratatat would stand no chance)
― ⚖ on my truck (dyao), Saturday, 12 June 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago) link
really, you're gonna pit them against ratatat? seems like an unfair pairing to me, but i've only heard about a minute of ratatat, so
i've been to jail twice in my life - the second time i happened to be wearing a fucking champs tee shirt, and i felt like the holding cell felt i was frontin, which i was, since it's hard to be a champ and be in jail at the same time, let alone a fucking champ
― del griffith, Saturday, 12 June 2010 04:08 (fourteen years ago) link
ha I dunno they've just always seemed kinda similar to me (instrumentals centered around crunchy riffs) for some reason I've never heard a fucking champs album in full, think it's time to rectify that now
think my roommate had a fucking champs tshirt too

a formative guitar clinic in SF, late 90s... The Fucking C4AM95, Polvo, with TFUL282 headlining.
Probably the most different tunings on one given stage in one night since Glen Branca and Rat At Rat R and Mars ~downtown 81.
