Can this really be the first Kottke thread on ILM? I only have 6 and 12 String Guitar but man is it good. But maybe a lot of his other stuff sucks. What say you?

I have some of the earlier 70's albums on Capitol and Guitar Music from 1981. I've found that I like pretty everything, in varying degrees. I think my three albums of the ones I have are 6 + 12 String, Mudlark and Dreams and All That Stuff.
Is anyone more familiar with his 80's/Private era stuff? Any thoughts on it?

Been digging Burnt Lips a lot lately, which is surprising, because it's one of the vocal-heavy ones. Nice predominantly dark mood throughout, though.

Got a vinyl copy of his best-of this afternoon. I've never owned anything by him.

that track milton posted is fantastic !

He's not much of a singer--there are a couple of nice songs on side 4, but most of it ("Eight Miles High" especially) isn't very good. I really liked the first three sides, though.

Self-described his own singing as sounding like "geese farts on a muggy day."
So, I love his singing just based on the fact that he already knows you think he's terrible.
Much in the same way I love Vini Reilly's singing.
He's arguably the greatest living guitarist, though.

On another thread, I was bemoaning the fact that 12 String Blues has never been properly reissued. I love the debut (doesn't everybody?) and I like Circle 'Round The Sun a lot, too, so I've always wanted to hear this mysterious second album. Usually goes for between $40 and $75 when it pops up. Too rich for my blood, especially in these reissue-crazed times.

I would love to hear it as well.
― Austin, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 03:29 (nine years ago)
Uh
12 String Blues is the debut. As for why it hasn't been reissued, we are working on it. If this hasn't come up before (I swear it has) my dad is the one that recorded it and released it on his label.

The whole thing is recorded live at the coffeehouse my dad owned (The Scholar in Minneapolis) - Circle Round the Sun was an attempt by his manager to do a proper studio recording, which mostly failed.

Oh, weird, my chronology is way off! I had it that the Takoma album (6 and 12 String Guitar) was first, then 12 String Blues, then Circle 'Round The Sun. Your dad ran Oblivion? That's cool!
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 06:15 (nine years ago)
Dang, he came to town last week doing a duo gig with Dave King (The Bad Plus, one of my favorite drummers) and I didn't even know about it.
